Biblical Discernment02

 1. 1. Biblical Discernment Weighing God’s Truth against a World in Error
 2. 2. The Need for Biblical Discernment: In Regards to Preaching (Part 1 of 3)
 3. 3. What is good preaching?

It is not in the superficial.

Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart .

 4. 4. What is good preaching?

It is not in the quantity.

Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

 5. 5. What is good preaching?

It is in the quality of the message .

Not the speaker or his ability

1 Corinthians 2:1-5 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. (2) For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. (3) And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. (4) And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: (5) That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

 6. 6. Expositional Preaching

“That is preaching that seeks to have God’s intended meaning of the passage as the agenda of the sermon,”

“A sermon is expositional if its content and intent are controlled by the content and intent of a particular passage of Scripture.”

Nehemiah 8:8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

 7. 7. Example

Believe on Christ

Keep the law (circumcision, etc.)

Justified

(Judaizers message)

Believe on Christ

Justified

Keep the law

(Paul’s message)

 8. 8. Galatians 2:14-21

But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel , I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? (15) We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, (16) Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ , even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ , and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. (17) But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. (18) For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. (19) For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God . (20) I am crucified with Christ : nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God , who loved me, and gave himself for me. (21) I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain .

 9. 9. What is good preaching?

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 And these words, which I command thee this day , shall be in thine heart: (7) And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children , and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Ezra 7:10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.

Nehemiah 8:8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

Jonah 3:2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.

 10. 10. What is good preaching?

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Acts 5:42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ .

1 Corinthians 1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel : not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

1 Corinthians 1:23 But we preach Christ crucified , unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

1 Corinthians 9:14-16 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel . (15) But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void. (16) For though I preach the gospel , I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel !

 11. 11. What is good preaching?

2 Corinthians 4:5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord ; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.

Galatians 1:9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed .

Ephesians 3:7-8 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power. (8) Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ ;

 12. 12. What is good preaching?

1 Timothy 4:11-16 These things command and teach . (12) Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. (13) Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine . (14) Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. (15) Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. (16) Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee .

1 Timothy 6:3-5 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness ; (4) He is proud, knowing nothing , but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, (5) Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself .

2 Timothy 4:1-4 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; (2) Preach the word ; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine . (3) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; (4) And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables .

 13. 13. What is good preaching?

In his book, Nine Marks of a Healthy Church, Mark Dever contends that expositional preaching is:

“ far and away the most important mark,”

“ It is the preaching that presumes belief in the authority of Scripture—that the Bible is actually God’s Word. Expositional preaching is a commitment to hear God’s Word—not just to affirm that it is God’s Word but to actually submit yourself to it.”

 14. 14. What is my role in preaching?

We preach to our children

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 And these words, which I command thee this day , shall be in thine heart: (7) And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children , and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Ephesians 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

 15. 15. What is my role in preaching?

We preach to our children

We preach to ourselves

Ephesians 2:11-13 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; (12) That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: (13) But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

 16. 16. What is my role in preaching?

We preach to our children

We preach to ourselves

We preach to the lost.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

 17. 17. What is my role in the Sunday Sermon?

Pray for the message. (Two aspects)

Pray for the messenger

Pray for the message

Listen to the message expositionally.

Apply the message to your life.

James 1:22-25 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. (23) For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: (24) For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. (25) But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

 18. 18. Conclusion

“ When we fail to act on truth, discernment dies.” – C.J. Mahaney

Truth is the Word of God; expository preaching submits itself to the truth of the passage in which the sermon is derived.

Listen with Biblical Discernment as you hear God’s Word preached. Truth is the Word of God; expository preaching submits itself to the truth of the passage in which the sermon is derived.

 19. 19. Conclusion

“Sermons that only address our felt needs

are exercises in futility if the centrality,

sufficiency, and supremacy of Christ has

been lost.” –David Wells
