Tips and guidelines
in giving peer
review comments
on a Literacy

Prepare for Peer-Review
•Start early
•At least 40 min for each
essay
•20-30 minutes reading
each essay
•20-30 minutes writing
comments on the essay

First Read Through
• Read the paper once making only minimal
comments.
 Use emoticons  
 Will save you time and energy.
 See the whole before you can evaluate the parts.
• After first read through, somewhere in the
document, create a comment that includes:.
 a summary 2-5 sentence summary of the essay
 The two things you liked most about the essay.
Second Read Through
• Use the Peer-Review Guidelines
Worksheet.
– Read the instructions before each question to
determine the best way to answer.
– Be sure to address all questions on the
worksheet in your comments to receive full
credit for your peer-review.
Tips and Guidelines
• Write in complete sentences.
• Make comments clear and easy to
understand.
• Focus on “Larger Issues” first.
• Structure
• Context
• Details and Dialogue
• Make comments text-specific.
• Position comment in the text and quote from the
text in your comment when necessary.
Tips and Guidelines (continued)
• Be positive, but critically constructive.
• Point out the strengths with areas for improvement,
but don’t provide only praise.
• Make comments in the form of questions.
• “I’m not sure why he reacted that way; can you add
some context or backstory to make it clear?”
• If you point out a problem, offer a suggestion.
• “I like this detail, but can you describe her further?
Maybe describe what she was wearing.”
Final Review
• Review your feedback and be sure
you have thoroughly addressed each
point on the Peer-Review Guidelines
Worksheet.
• Make sure your comments are
specific, that each comment is
written in a complete sentence and
that every time you make a criticism,
you also offer a suggestion for how
the writer might improve that
portion of the essay.

  • 3. First Read Through • Read the paper once making only minimal comments.  Use emoticons    Will save you time and energy.  See the whole before you can evaluate the parts. • After first read through, somewhere in the document, create a comment that includes:.  a summary 2-5 sentence summary of the essay  The two things you liked most about the essay.
  • 4. Second Read Through • Use the Peer-Review Guidelines Worksheet. – Read the instructions before each question to determine the best way to answer. – Be sure to address all questions on the worksheet in your comments to receive full credit for your peer-review.
  • 5. Tips and Guidelines • Write in complete sentences. • Make comments clear and easy to understand. • Focus on “Larger Issues” first. • Structure • Context • Details and Dialogue • Make comments text-specific. • Position comment in the text and quote from the text in your comment when necessary.
  • 6. Tips and Guidelines (continued) • Be positive, but critically constructive. • Point out the strengths with areas for improvement, but don’t provide only praise. • Make comments in the form of questions. • “I’m not sure why he reacted that way; can you add some context or backstory to make it clear?” • If you point out a problem, offer a suggestion. • “I like this detail, but can you describe her further? Maybe describe what she was wearing.”
  • 7. Final Review • Review your feedback and be sure you have thoroughly addressed each point on the Peer-Review Guidelines Worksheet. • Make sure your comments are specific, that each comment is written in a complete sentence and that every time you make a criticism, you also offer a suggestion for how the writer might improve that portion of the essay.
