This document provides steps for implementing the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). It discusses 6 phases of PECS with the goal of teaching students with autism spectrum disorders to communicate through picture exchange. Phase 1 teaches the basic skills of exchanging a picture for a desired item. Phase 2 expands on spontaneity and generalization. Phase 3 introduces discriminating between multiple pictures. The steps emphasize fading prompts, using reinforcement, and practicing exchanges across environments to facilitate independent communication.
