Building with Empathy by Google Product ManagerProduct School
Your product ideas and analyses are only as valuable as your ability to put things into action. And putting things into action is all about working with others in the organization. This process involves a number of soft skills, like communication, persuasion, negotiation, and evangelism. People often cringe at the mere mention of the term soft skills. This is because far too often these traits are perceived as non-quantifiable characteristics that are useless in driving results. The truth about soft skills is that they can be the make-or-break factor for a business.

3 Early Pitfalls New PMs Can Encounter by Dropbox Group PMProduct School
Main Takeaways:
- Pitfall 1: Not getting a proper lay of the land. Gather raw data from everyone to form a picture of how things work, but don't assume everything is optimal. There is probably more dysfunction than you think.
- Pitfall 2: Focusing on action too early instead of connecting the dots to company strategy. Its easy to get distracted by incoming requests or pass-downs from your boss. It's critical to first align your mandate to the company's strategy. If that is solid, everything else is a prioritization exercise or investment case.
- Pitfall 3: Blindly following others in your first project. Rely on your instincts and think for yourself with your first project. Don't paint by numbers if the details don't make sense to you. In the end, you'll be the owner of the outcomes.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

8. Tip #1: Discover your options
● Self-evaluation
● Turn to Google
● Talk to family, friends, acquaintances
● Test it out
Remember: Don’t get too caught up. This is
brainstorming and discovery. You will live and
learn and your path will change.
9. Tip #2: Build your network
● Reach out to your connections for introductions via LinkedIn
● Tap into your alumni group
● Attend industry events (like this one!)
● Volunteer for relevant events/organizations
Remember: You need to put yourself out there to
be most effective. It may feel uncomfortable but
it gets easier.
10. Tip #3: Use your network
● Ask for 1-on-1 coffee/phone chats to learn about others’ paths to PM
● Seek out advice
● If it’s appropriate, ask for references
Remember: You’d be surprised at how willing
people are to lend a hand.
11. Tip #4: Identify your “specialty”
● What is your unique strength?
● What experience can you bring to the table that makes you stand out?
● Is there an industry you’re well-versed in and passionate about?
Remember: PM is a competitive space. One way
to expedite your journey is to focus on roles
where you can take advantage of your expertise.
12. Tip #5: Invest in your weak spots
● Tech:
○ Codeacademy
○ MIT OpenCourseWare
● Public speaking:
○ Toastmasters
● Writing:
○ LinkedIn
● Overall:
○ Coursera/Udacity/LinkedIn Learning
○ How-to books
○ PM podcasts and events
Remember: This can be inside or outside of your
everyday job.
13. Tip #6: Be open to stepping stones
● What skills will you be able to work on?
● Will there be an opportunity for mentorship?
● Is there room for growth within the organization?
Remember: Your next role doesn’t have to be
your dream job, but it should be something that
gives you a chance to gain experience to get
where you want to go.
14. Tip #7: Hone your story
● Ask yourself:
○ Why did you decide to pursue PM?
○ What did you do to get yourself there?
○ What are your strengths and how did you address your weaknesses?
● Write it down
● Practice at networking events/1-on-1s
● Use it to structure your resume
Remember: Interviewing is about telling your
story. Working on it ahead of time will help you
be comfortable and confident. It might even help
clarify what you want next.
