Is School Discipline a
Pathway to Incarceration?
       Deborah Adams
Introduction
 Throughout several years and as many
courses I have recognized and become
           increasingly concerned about the relationship
           between school discipline and incarceration.
My research is based on accumulated data
           acquired on the subject.

Editor's Notes

  • #4 Massachusetts laws specify that disciplinary removal be used for serious behaviors that threaten school safety. 54% of removals reported for unassigned offenses did not threaten safety.
  • #5 According to professional opinion, research findings, and social psychology literature…the discipline of students of color may be attributed to the following…
  • #6 SWPBS – Aim to decrease problem behavior and develop integrated systems for students at school, classroom, and individual student levels. Teaching is by modeling, role playing and rewarding positive behaviors.SEL – Recognize and manage emotions, solve problems effectively and establish positive relationships with others.Restorative Practices – Based on theory that human beings are happier, more cooperative and productive, and more likely to make positive changes when those in authority do things with them rather than to them.SRS – School team-based approach (1) Create a positive school climate, (2) Early identification and intervention, (3) Effective responses
