Module 2. Parts of a Research Proposal (Thesis Outline)
I. Desired Learning outcome (DLO):
At the end of this lesson the students are expected to know the
parts of research proposal/thesis outline and be able to write
research outline.
II. CONTENT FOCUS
INTRODUCTION
A thesis research proposal is a formal document outlining the research
topic, justification, and methodology, aimed at convincing the supervisor,
professor, reader, and panelist that the proposal is suitable and manageable
within time and resource constraints.
The thesis outline is a study proposal that the research student submits to
the college's director of research and development as well as the research
coordinator prior to the experiment's actual conduct. It serves as a partial
fulfillment of the requirements for the degree being sought.
A well- written thesis proposal should specify the research topic, goal, and
stakeholders' engagement in detail. It should also support the topic's originality
with a thorough study design and workable plan.
An informative title or title page, an introduction outlining the background and
scope of the proposed research, a literature review, a methodological section,
and a proposed research design are all included in a structured thesis research
proposal.
A theory or assertion that needs to be proven is called a thesis.
-a prerequisite for academic credit; nonetheless, the typical word count for a
thesis is 25,000 words.

. Preliminary Pages may consist the following:
1. Front cover
Front cover contains the following:
a. Title
b. Author
c. Date
2. Title Page. Short and descriptive title of the proposed thesis project as well as the
author, research mentor and date of delivery.
3. Transmittal. It states the college and school name with address to where the
thesis outline is submitted, the degree sought and the major field of
specialization. The 1st line is written in 7 spaces below the author. Important
words are capitalized except the degree, which is written in bold, uppercase
letters, single spaces below the degree, all-important words capitalized.
4. Table of Contents. List of headings and subheadings with page numbers.
5. List of Table. List of all tables with caption and page numbers.
6. List of figures. List of all figures with caption and page numbers.
¶ INTRODUCTION
This chapter contains the following sections:
a. background
b. significance of the study
b. objectives
c. duration of the study
d. Definition of terms
a. Background of your study and should capture reader’s interest. The length
of your thesis introduction is depending on the length of your whole thesis. Usually it
is estimated to have at least 10% of the total word count.
The main function of the first section is to justify the conduct of the study.
Few citations may be included.
(local issues and concerns that you find related/connected to your
present study. The succeeding paragraphs should talk about
universal/international, national and the last paragraph must stress the problem
gap/what needs to be solved by your study. )
4
b. The objectives should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and
time-bound.
The specific place where the experiment will be conducted and the date
for thestart and completion of the study should be indicated in the last
section of this chapter.
4. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This chapter presents some relevant concepts and information on the
variables.
The review of related literature provides the researcher and the reader
with information, findings and conclusion from the past investigation which
are related to the problem or subject under study. Both local and foreign
work would be included. Even if there is no published work on the specific
topic, a reasonable review can still be made by citing related words. Avoid
very old publication; limit to the past ten years as far as possible, except
where there is none or insufficient or when citing historical facts and original
discoveries (Bondad, 1993).
Do not enumerate the literature cited. Instead, organized the information
by topic and provide subheadings if there are sufficient literature on the
subject .
Included at least ten literature cited or related literature citations. If the
author and the date are enclosed in parenthesis, put comma after the author.
Ex. ((Torrefiel, 2006). Several citations enclosed in parenthesis should be
separated by semi-colon. Ex. (Altares, 1996; Turnos, 1997).
Conceptual Framework. It describes your independent and dependent
variables including the illustration/figure.
Hypothesis. A valid statement of predictions of researchers to their study.
- A premise or claim that we want to test.
-A tentative statement saying what you expect to find in your research.
5
Thesis statement
State your thesis. It can be in the form of a hypothesis, research question, project
statement or goal statement.
APPROACH OR METHODS/MATERIALS AND METHODS
This chapter presents the inquiry of the study in which the research design,
respondents of the study, location of the study, research instrument, data
gathering procedure, statistical procedure were based.
Describe the methods to be used and contains description of your approach,
materials and procedures as well as calculation and techniques.
LITERATURE CITED /REFERENCES
This chapter shall contain the list of references actually cited anywhere in
the introduction, materials and methods or review of literature. Entries should be
arranged alphabetically and separated by two spaces. The first line of every
entry is “left-flushed” while the succeeding lines are indented and single-
spaced.
APPENDICES
A. Budgetary Requirements
B. Plan of Course Work
C. Application for Research title
D. Application for Outline Defense
E. Schedule of Activities
Appendix example
Work plan/Plan of Course Work. Time table of your experiment such as the
indicating deadlines and the work already completed.
