A short presentation that will assist you in picking your training organisation. Some questions for your consider asking your training provider. If the do not know what you are talking about look elsewhere.
2. Biggs Alignment Theory
what is it?
Biggs stipulates using constructive teaching and
learning activities which forces the learner to develop
and create their own learning through activities
Well aligned systems are required
Including
The curriculum and Intended Learning outcomes ILO
The teaching methods used
The assessment tasks
“Does it do what it says on the tin?”
3. Teaching and the learning activities must be
aligned with the intended learning outcome
A great example of this would be:
If the course aims were that the delegates were able to
effectively apply the moving and handling skills, knowledge
and problem solve in the field of dementia.
However if the course covered how to move and handle
effectively, but did not explore creatively with the delegates
what the potential issues are with a person with dementia
and allow them to problem solve.
They could be taught how problems have been solved as
opposed to actually doing this themselves.
4. Teaching is simply a catalyst for learning
(Biggs, 2003)
It is useful to remember when seeing what has been learnt:
it is what the student goes that is more important than what
the teacher does
(Shuell, 1986)
How should the training organisation constructively align
their training?
Define ILO Choose teaching and learning activities
Assess delegates actual against ILO that reflect the ILO
Decide whether or not more work is
required
ILO –intended learning outcome
5. Advantages
• An effectively aligned learning system can simultaneously
assist both the lower level and higher level learner
• Engaging learners in a variety of activities is more
beneficial than trying to get them to memorise facts
• Doing and applying the knowledge will also promote their
understanding
6. Disadvantages
• Your lower level learner will require more input and
may require extra time allotted
• Can the training organization provide this?
• Some learners still require additional support, how
can your training organization provide this?
