Who doesn’t like music? I completely understand why a lot of people think music isn’t the same

anymore but the way the song is created is the gist of quality music by being able to be bland and

yet creative at the same time. Different genres of music use this technique to further their craft

and form of writing and that’s the beauty of songwriting everything is original. I would like to

know the advantages and the challenges of becoming a songwriter in the hip hop field of music.

Personally it’s a great career that anyone can pursue.

When getting started in the brainstorming process, the title can come from the message

behind the lyrics, an experience, or emotional situation. Also the title can make up the lyrics for

the song along the way. When writing lyrics from the title ensure the plot of the song continues

and keeps the listeners interest. Song craft is designing a song with originality.“Good

songwriters use songcraft to give their songs an emotional impact and make them memorable”

(Robert). When I hear a good song I listen to not only the words but to the concept. The way the

artist incorporates English and still manages to get his or her point across. It’s not just a hot beat

and lyrics that don’t make any sense but a catchy hook and advanced wordplay that attracts me

to a song. Like when one of my favorite songwriters, Drake, says in this song entitled “Fancy”:

“Mature women with more than me were the first to tempt me, and Jason had this girl Tammy

with a purple Bentley, How she got it I didn’t even get to ask, I just knew that she was fine like a

ticket on the dash”; and he still stayed on topic using a simile. That’s why the idea of creating

music intrigues me, because I write my own songs and if I like the way the original song sounds,

I may write my own version but with a totally different approach. Sometimes just making a list

of phrases or rhyming words can help with the organization of a song because rhyme scheme is

effective to making your lyrics creative with abstract ideas to keep your audience in tune

throughout the verse. Themajority of the songs I’ve heard have a least 2-3 verses depending on

the length of the instrumental. A verse in a rap song consists of 16 bars or lines relating to the

hook also known as the chorus of the song which is the attention getter; the gist of the song

title’s meaning and is usually 8 bars including a catchy refrain to make you tap your feet and nod

your head.Different methods of poetry can be used to determine the melody, meter, or how many

stanzas you would like to write. Ideas are endless. Songwriting expanded as the years walked

by and made a major impact in the music world today. I’m a music lover and analyzer of

different genres like singing songs called RnB focus on love and relationships or situations you

can relate to, Rapping songs on the other hand usually for lyricists and poetic composers, have a

variety of different messages to them. Nowadays when I hear a rap song it doesn’t really have a

positive reinforcement behind the art form of hip hop. It’s just a bunch of nothing on a nice

instrumental. But there’s a select few of great composers like Drake, and J. Cole that have songs

that the average Joe can relate to and feel what they’re trying to say. Heavy metal like Metallica

for instance Godsmack, has a dark kind of interpretation of their music. On the other hand

Country musicians like Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Swift share

their past experiences with an emotional tone. Rock and Roll like Elvis Presley, performed

music to get the crowd off their feet and dance until their legs fell off. Commercials jingles draw

your attention every time you hear one and allows you to be like “Gosh I want to buy that!” just

by hearing the catchy message because who doesn’t know at least one commercial by heart ?

Songwriters can create the melody as well as the tempo of the song depending on the style

desired by the writer. Motivation is the key to success. Examples of dedication to this field

include: “Canadian rapper Drake has transitioned from child actor to major hip hop star. He

scored a number one hit before he had a record deal and made his first album “Thank Me Later”

go platinum. He says he’s a huge fan of Jimmy Hendrix and watches the DVD of Hendrix at

Woodstock to motivate him before he performs. He says Kanye West’s 808 and Heartbreaks

album gave him confidence to use a singing/rapping style for his songs” (Scaggs). After you have

your idea for the name and what your song means you have to record it in the studio. This is the

best part because your song now has a voice and isn’t just words on a page. “After you record

your masterpiece you must find a music publisher or recording act to work with the song and be

able to use any contracts he or she has to get the song listened to by making demos to showcase

your talent. Depending on the deal made the songwriter may sell the song outright or just sell the

rights to it” (Field).

After the difficult part is complete, then it’s time for hard work to pay off. Successful

songwriters make a lot of money once their songs or album sales skyrocket into the billboards

from a fan base of listeners of their music.
