This document discusses figures of speech (alankaras) in poetry. It notes that Bhamaha was the first poetician to describe alankaras. He described 24 figures of speech that fall into two categories - shabdanalankara relating to the meaning of sounds, and arthanalankara relating to the meaning of words and thoughts. Later, Mammata presented sixty-one figures of speech grouped into seven types. The document contrasts the classification systems of Bhamaha and Mammata and notes they are based on differences in grammar, value, objects compared, syntax, semantics, and coherence. It provides the example of upama alankara, where one thing is compared to a similar but famous thing.
