- 3. Willmore Willmore is an English navale captain and a friend to the other Englishman in the play. He was the hero of the Play. He is eager but unfaithful with women and quick to get into fight. He shows little concern for others or remorse for his behaviour. He romances both Hellena and Angellica.
- 4. Angellica Bianca Angelica Bianca is a renowned courtesan who charges 1000 crowns a month for her companionship. She hangs an advertising poster and outside her home and prides herself on the power , she has over men. She has never fallen in love this changes when she meets Willmore. She is charmed and offers him her heart and her body with no change but his love in return.
- 5. Belvile A dashing Cavalier and epitome of gentleman Belvile is in love with Florida. He met during the Spanish Civil War. Belviles attempts to reunite with Florida. Belvile’s is at last joined in matrimony with Florida.
- 6. Don Antonio Don Antonio a Spanish nobleman and the wealthy son of viceroy of Spain. He has been betrothed to Florida. His agreement with his good friend Florida’s brother Don Pedro. Antonio only has eyes for the seductive prostitute Angelica.

Don Pedro The main antagonist of the play the rigid and controlling Don Pedro wishes for his sister Florida to Marry his friend Don Antonio and for his sister Hellena to become a nun in order to safeguard their virtues. He hypocritically desires the beauteous prostitute Angelica and eventually quarrels with both Antonio and Willmore over her affection
- 8. Hellena Hellena is a witty willful young Spanish noblewoman. She does not want to become a nun and has resolved to seek out love at Carnival . She finds willmore and is delighted by his wit and good looks. She will love as she likes Hellena loves Willmore. She is in competition with Angellica.
- 9. Florinda Florinda is the only pure and innocent young woman in the play. Florinda is a noblewoman who has been betrothed to wizened old Don vincentio by her father. She and her sister and brother are away in Naples . She has been able to put this out of her mind.
