This document provides an overview of an ontology engineering tutorial being conducted as part of the PalGov project. It includes information about the project consortium and funding, a tutorial map outlining the sessions and their learning objectives, and background information about ontologies. Specifically, it defines an ontology as an explicit specification of a conceptualization written in logic as a set of axioms. It distinguishes between ontologies and conceptual data schemas by noting that ontologies provide meaning for concepts and relations in addition to structure.

Humans have the extraordinary ability to learn continually from experience. Not only we can apply previously learned knowledge and skills to new situations, we can also use these as the foundation for later learning. One of the grand goals of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is building an artificial continual learning agent that constructs a sophisticated understanding of the world from its own experience through the autonomous incremental development of ever more complex knowledge and skills. However, current AI systems greatly suffer from the exposure to new data or environments which even slightly differ from the ones for which they have been trained for. Moreover, the learning process is usually constrained on fixed datasets within narrow and isolated tasks which may hardly lead to the emergence of more complex and autonomous intelligent behaviors. In essence, continual learning and adaptation capabilities, while more than often thought as fundamental pillars of every intelligent agent, have been mostly left out of the main AI research focus. In this talk, we explore the application of these ideas in the context of Vision with a focus on (deep) continual learning strategies for object recognition running at the edge on highly-constrained hardware devices.

Dynamic and always-changing environments constitute an hard challenge for current reinforcement learning techniques. Artificial agents, nowadays, are often trained in very static and reproducible conditions in simulation, where the common assumption is that observations can be sampled i.i.d from the environment. However, tackling more complex problems and real-world settings this can be rarely considered the case, with environments often non-stationary and subject to unpredictable, frequent changes. In this talk we discuss about a new open benchmark for learning continually through reinforce in a complex 3D non-stationary object picking task based on VizDoom and subject to several environmental changes. We further propose a number of end-to-end, model-free continual reinforcement learning strategies showing competitive results even without any access to previously encountered environmental conditions or observations.

Ontologies have recently received popularity in the area of knowledge management and knowledge sharing,
especially after the evolution of the Semantic Web and its supporting technologies. An ontology defines the terms
and concepts (meaning) used to describe and represent an area of knowledge.The aim of this paper is to identify all
possible existing ontologies and ontology management tools (Protégé 3.4, Apollo, IsaViz & SWOOP) that are freely
available and review them in terms of: a) interoperability, b) openness, c) easiness to update and maintain, d)
market status and penetration. The results of the review in ontologies are analyzed for each application area, such
as transport, tourism, personal services, health and social services, natural languages and other HCI-related
domains. Ontology Building/Management Tools are used by different groups of people for performing diverse tasks.
Although each tool provides different functionalities, most of the users just use only one, because they are not able
to interchange their ontologies from one tool to another. In addition, we considered the compatibility of different
ontologies with different development and management tools. The paper is also concerns the detection of
commonalities and differences between the examined ontologies, both on the same domain (application area) and
among different domains.

A theory is presented according to which "languages" with structural variability and compositional semantics evolved in several species for *internal* use (e.g. in perception, planning, learning, forming goals, deciding, etc.) before *external* languages evolved for communication. The theory implies that such internal languages develop in young humans before a language for communication.
It is is also noted that the standard notion of 'compositional semantics' has to allow for the propagation of semantic content from parts to wholes to be potentially context sensitive at every stage: i.e. current context, speaker intentions, user knowledge, shared goals, can all affect how semantics of larger parts are derived from semantics of smaller parts+syntactic structure. This applies as much to non-verbal languages as to verbal ones.
This theory of how human languages evolved from earlier 'internal languages' (GLs) is inconsistent with the best known published theories of evolution or development of language.

ABSTRACT
Unlike what is the case for physical entities and other types of continuants, few process ontologies exist. This is not only because processes received less attention in the research community, but also because classifying them is challenging. Moreover, upper level categories or classification criteria to help in modelling and integrating lower level process ontologies have thus far not been developed or widely adopted. This paper proposes a basis for further classifying processes in the Basic Formal Ontology. The work is inspired by the aspectual characteristics of verbs such as homeomericity, cumulativity, telicity, atomicity, instantaneity and durativity. But whereas these characteristics have been proposed by linguists and philosophers of language from a linguistic perspective with a focus on how matters are described, our focus is on what is the case in reality thus providing an ontological perspective. This was achieved by first investigating the applicability of these characteristics to the top-level processes in the Gene Ontology, and then, where possible, deriving from the linguistic perspective relationships that are faithful to the ontological principles adhered to by the Basic Formal Ontology.
The goal of this course is to introduce students to ideas and techniques from discrete mathematics that are widely used in computer science. Ultimately, students are expected to understand and use (abstract) discrete structures that are the backbones of computer science. In particular, this class is meant to introduce logic, proofs, sets, functions, relations, counting, graphs and trees and with an emphasis on applications in computer science.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
