Is it a realistic or abstract work of art? Why did you like this artwork?
Base your observation on careful looking, seeing, interpreting, analyzing, and describing. Think of the artwork’s conceptual idea/meaning, its composition (see description below) as well as the use of the art elements - form, line, value/shade, light, color, texture.

a written report or description, as in a newspaper, magazine, etc.; sometimes, specif., a favorable account, as for a publicity release

A medium refers to the materials that are used to create a work of art. The plural of medium is media. Some of the most common media are oil paints, acrylic paints, tempera, marble (soft, white stone), and bronze
3. elements of composition
In Western art the Elements of Composition are generally considered to be:
Unity: Do all the parts of the composition feel as if they belong together, or does something feel stuck on, awkwardly out of place?
Balance: Balance is the sense that the painting "feels right" and not heavier on one side. Having a symmetrical arrangement adds a sense of calm, whereas an asymmetrical arrangement creates a more dynamic feeling. A painting that is not balanced creates a sense of unease.
Movement: There are many ways to give a sense of movement in a painting, such as the arrangement of objects, the position of figures, the flow of a river. You can use leading lines (a photography term applicable to painting) to direct the viewer's eye into and around the painting. Leading lines can be actual lines, such as the lines of a fence or railroad, or they can be implied lines, such as a row of trees or curve of stones or circles.
Rhythm: In much the same way music does, a piece of art can have a rhythm or underlying beat that leads your eye to view the artwork at a certain pace. Look for the large underlying shapes (squares, triangles, etc.) and repeated color. (See example)
Focus (or Emphasis): The viewer's eye ultimately wants to rest on the "most important" thing or focal point in the painting, otherwise the eye feels lost, wandering around in space.
Contrast: Paintings with high contrast - strong differences between light and dark, for example - have a different feel than paintings with minimal contrast in light and dark, such as in Whistler Nocturne series. In addition to light and dark, contrast can be differences in shape, color, size, texture, type of line, etc.
Pattern: A regular repetition of lines, shapes, colors, or values in a composition.
Proportion: How things fit together and relate to each other in terms of size and scale; whether big or small, nearby or distant.

Line –
· Includes actual lines, implied lines, lines formed by edges, directional lines, and lines forming pattern, texture, shading, and contour lines creating modeling
· Strictly defined: a line is a path traced by a moving point
· Can be organic or straight
· Popular among artists utilizing contour lines such as Matisse
· Shape –
· A two-dimensional area having identifiable boundaries, created by lines, color or value changes, or some combination of these
· Form: deals with composition and the physical appearance of a work of art relating to materials and style
Mass –
· Three-dimensional form, often implying bulk, density, and weight
Light –
· Actual light, illusion of light
· The contrasts created by light and darkness (related to value)
· The origin of light and how that effects the interpretation of the work
· Rembrandt is well known as a painter of light. He uses small beams of light as emphasis in his paintings, creating shadows. He plays with light in such as way so that the light itself actually becomes a character in the painting.
Value –
· Refers to light and dark, chiaroscuro (movement or gesture of light and shade)
· The gradation of a gray scale or hue, tint and shade
Color –
· Local color, emotional qualities of color (the mood), color schemes
· Analogous color, monochromatic color, triads, polychromatic color, absence of color
Texture –
· Can be actual or implied through medium, style, composition, value, color, pattern, etc.
Pattern –
· Any decorative, repetitive motif or design
· Can create visual texture
Space –
· Can be 2- or 3-dimensional, may refer to the illusion of space or depth on a 2-dimentional surface (i.e. perspective)
· The area behind the shape, the background
· Architecture: appreciating the sculptural masses from the outside, while walking through the shaped space from the inside
· The void within boundaries
· “The works of art take their character from the ways in which they carve out volumes of space within and around them.” (Gilbert’s Living with Art – 6th ed.)
Time –
· Variations of light to indicate a time of day
· Popular with Impressionists like Monet (He enjoyed making studies of the same environment or object at different times of day. He believed that each shift in light created a different subject, as though there were no continuing reality but only a collection of moments.)
Motion – Implied or actual kinetic energy, dynamism Popular with Futurists in the early 20th century such as Balla, Calder, and Boccioni due to inventions such as the automobile and airplanes.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Unity –
· A sense of oneness, a coherent whole
· Appears almost always with Variety. Artists strive to find just the right point on the spectrum – the point at which there is sufficient visual unity enlivened by sufficient variety.

· The various elements that constitute a description include:

c. Size and scale of work (relationship to person and/or frame and/or context)
d. Elements or general shapes (architectural structural system) within the composition, including building of post-lintel construction or painting with several figures lined up in a row; identification of objects
e. Description of axis whether vertical, diagonal, horizontal, etc.
f. Description of line, including contour as soft, planar, jagged, etc.
g. Description of how line describes shape and space (volume); distinguish between lines of objects and lines of composition, e.g., thick, thin, variable, irregular, intermittent, indistinct, etc.

b. Selection of most distinctive features or characteristics whether line, shape, color, texture, etc.
c. Analysis of the principles of design or composition, e.g., stable,
repetitious, rhythmic, unified, symmetrical, harmonious, geometric, varied, chaotic, horizontal or vertically oriented, etc.
d. Discussion of how elements or structural system contribute to appearance of image or function
e. Analysis of use of light and role of color, e.g., contrast, shadowy,
illogical, warm, cool, symbolic, etc.
f. Treatment of space and landscape, both real and illusionary (including use of perspective), e.g., compact, deep, shallow, naturalistic, random

Describe the subject matter of each work, in detail. Imagine you are describing the work to a blind person; use that level of detail. For example, don’t just say there’s a house in a field.
Identify and discuss five formal elements of art (Choose from line, shape, color, texture, space, contrast, scale, balance, and emphasis) in detail, for
each
work. For instance, don’t just tell me there were lines in the work, tell me what kind (straight, curved, horizontal, diagonal, thick, thin, implied, etc.) and tell me how they affect the composition (lines dominate the left half of the work, etc.).
3. Compare and Contrast
the two (2) works (70 points):
Compare and contrast the works (Do not compare the terms from part 2), and answer these questions in your analysis: How are the works similar and how are they different? Is the message or function the same? Is the intended audience different? Do they look alike or not? Has the meaning changed over time?
Also discuss such things as symbolism and purpose (aesthetic, social commentary, propaganda, etc.) and evaluate the effectiveness of the works.

3. Attach the museum ticket stub and picture of the artwork to your paper. If there is no ticket, attach a picture of you next to the artwork.
4. Minimum 3 pages, maximum 5 pages, 12 font, double spaced. Follow the rubric and incorporate the information listed below.

Form is an element of art that is three-dimensional and encloses volume. Cubes, spheres, and cylinders are examples of various forms.
Line is an element of art which refers to the continuous mark made on some surface by a moving point. It may be two dimensional, like a pencil mark on a paper or it may be three dimensional (wire) or implied (the edge of a shape or form) often it is a outline, contour or silhouette.
Shape is an enclosed space defined by other elements of art. Shapes may take on the appearance of two-d or three- objects.
Color Is an element of art with three properties:
1) Hue, the name of the color, e.g. red, yellow, etc
2) Intensity or the purity and strength of the color such as brightness or dullness
3) Value, or the lightness or darkness of the color
Texture refers to the surface quality or "feel" of an object, such as roughness, smoothness, or softness. Actual texture can be felt while simulated textures are implied by the way the artist renders areas of the picture.
Space refers to the distance or area between, around, above or within things. It can be a description for both 2 and 3 dimensional portrayals.
Value describes the lightness or darkness of a color. Value is needed to express Volume.

Balance is a sense of stability in the body of work. Balance can be created by repeating same shapes and by creating a feeling of equal weight.
Harmony is achieved in a body of work by using similar elements throughout the work, harmony gives an uncomplicated look to your work.
Variety refers to the differences in the work; you can achieve variety by using difference shapes, textures, colors and values in your work.
Movement adds excitement to the work by showing action and directing the viewers eye throughout the picture plane.
Rhythm is a type of movement in drawing and painting. It is seen in repeating of shapes and colors. Alternating lights and darks also give a sense of rhythm.
Proportion or scale refers to the relationships of the size of objects in a body of work. Proportion gives a sense of size seen as a relationship of objects, such as smallness or largeness.
Unity is seen in a painting or other work when all the parts equal a whole. Your work should not appear disjointed or confusing.

Step 1: Ponder and Plan
Did you know that, since 1978, a certain percentage of all city-funded construction projects for public and municipal spaces in Chicago must be spent on public art?
· Who are these public artists?
· Where is their art?
· How do these works reflect or “live” in a neighborhood?
· How do communities assign value to them…or not?
· Do the styles, content, media, or messages differ across Chicago’s map?
· Which art do you see from your window, your block, your el stop, your commute, your favorite places in the city?
· Can you imagine these spaces without the art? Do you imagine replacing them with different one?
This project asks you to EXPLORE public art in Chicago, using both a mirror and a window as your “lens.”
You are assigned to visit or re-visit FOUR public art works in person.
· TWO of them should be pieces that are already meaningful to you (i.e. they are in your neighborhood, you love them, you see them every day, etc.).
· The OTHER TWO should be pieces that are totally new to you (i.e. you’ve never seen them or noticed them before, you discover them along with a new neighborhood or area of the city, you seek them out because of the artist/style/medium, etc.)
Use the Chicago Public Art Guide, Year of Public Art, CTA Public Art guide, and other resources posted in the Module 3—Part 3 folder to find new pieces or research the ones you already know. Conduct further research as needed and take notes on what you expect to see or hope to find. Map out your route and go!Step 2: Visit and Explore
When you arrive at each piece, SPEND TIME with it! Move around it, touch it (if allowed), sit for a while, notice how others respond to it, observe what’s around it. Art is a provocative medium, and your challenge in writing about art may often be to define and
evaluate the artist’s choices and techniques, which, according to your intellect and perception, arouse interest
and convey meaning. In most cases you will be translating the visual (what you see) into language (what you
write). In order to do this, you will have to be extremely attentive to the characteristics of the work—which
means that description will incorporate a portion of your essay—and be attentive to the vocabulary of the
discipline of Art.
You must also be able to develop a thesis statement with a detailed analysis and argument about the
artwork you have chosen. Therefore, you must consider what it is you want to say, and use description to
make that point. In many ways, writing an Art History essay is similar to writing other types of essays in the
Humanities. It requires a clear and focused topic, an arguable thesis, an organized format and structure, clear
and coherent paragraphs, and a command of grammar and style.
Thesis Statement
Most academic essays seek to persuade readers to understand a specific issue in a specific way—the
writer’s way. The writer’s thesis statement offers this substantial but concise assertion of her/his
understanding (usually in one to two sentences in the introduction or near the beginning of the essay), thereby
providing an essay with its judgmental focus.
Perhaps, though, in writing about art you might want to offer a well thought-out central idea rather
than an overtly argumentative statement. For example, “African art was a major influence on the work of
Pablo Picasso” states a well-documented and widely shared opinion that is interesting but uncontroversial.
Of course, a paper on this topic would have to fully elaborate on that relationship and offer examples of it.
The difference between an idea and a thesis statement is in their degree of contention. The above
example of a central idea could be debatable, but mainly the disagreement would arise if the writer does not
adequately explain and illustrate the idea through detailed description, intelligent criticism, and analysis,
and not because of the idea itself.
However, in a thesis statement—such as, “Picasso’s treatment of women in his art mirrors the
distorted vision he had of women in general”—it is more obvious that readers will either strongly disagree or
agree, by the very nature of the claim itself. Moreover, even if the writer advances a stimulating argument
with impressive evidence in defense of the thesis, because the claim is so contentious, a reader may still
disagree.

Comparison and Contrast

works of art. This type of essay usually requires a substantial comparative judgment of the two works, which will function as your thesis statement.
One option for a thesis statement for this kind of comparative essay could be based on how you see the two works in relation to each other and to some aspect of the human condition, or culture, or history. It could be, for example, that both artists painted peasants working in a field, but one painting suggests the oneness of humans and nature, perhaps because the figures appear to be an integral part of the field in which they are working, while the other painting emphasizes the separation between humans and nature. The evidence you provide for your thesis will include your interpretation, analysis, and description of the characteristics of both works, and must at all times relate to your thesis. For example, if you are discussing horizontality or verticality, you need to first accurately and clearly describe these elements in both works and then evaluate how these visual orientations demonstrate the validity of your thesis concerning humans as a part of nature or separate from it.

Five Simple Steps
I. Select the two works of art from European culture during the time period covered by this course from two different categories:
· Visual art, including sculpture, mosaics, painting, architecture, and other forms
· Literature, including poetry, a play, fiction, and other forms
· Music in what we think of as the Classical tradition (not popular or folk songs), including forms such as the suite, oratorio, mass, motet, opera, formal dance or ballet music, chorale, and so forth. Some of these works are lengthy, so you may listen to and write about a section or movement of a longer work if you choose. For example, rather than write about Handel’s entire three-hour oratorio, The Messiah, you could write about one section such as the aria, “I know that my Redeemer liveth.”
Example: In your paper, you may want to write about a sculpture (i.e., visual art) by the Classical Greek sculptor Praxiteles and a magnifcat, a choral religious work (i.e., music), by the Italian Renaissance composer Palestrina. Form is an element of art that is three-dimensional and encloses volume. Cubes, spheres, and cylinders are examples of various forms.
Line is an element of art which refers to the continuous mark made on some surface by a moving point. It may be two dimensional, like a pencil mark on a paper or it may be three dimensional (wire) or implied (the edge of a shape or form) often it is a outline, contour or silhouette.
Shape is an enclosed space defined by other elements of art. Shapes may take on the appearance of two-d or three- objects.
Color Is an element of art with three properties:

Space refers to the distance or area between, around, above or within things. It can be a description for both 2 and 3 dimensional portrayals.
Value describes the lightness or darkness of a color. Value is needed to express Volume.

Harmony is achieved in a body of work by using similar elements throughout the work, harmony gives an uncomplicated look to your work.
Variety refers to the differences in the work; you can achieve variety by using difference shapes, textures, colors and values in your work.
Movement adds excitement to the work by showing action and directing the viewers eye throughout the picture plane.
Rhythm is a type of movement in drawing and painting. It is seen in repeating of shapes and colors. Alternating lights and darks also give a sense of rhythm.
Proportion or scale refers to the relationships of the size of objects in a body of work. Proportion gives a sense of size seen as a relationship of objects, such as smallness or largeness.
Unity is seen in a painting or other work when all the parts equal a whole. Your work should not appear disjointed or confusing.

Step 1: Ponder and Plan
Did you know that, since 1978, a certain percentage of all city-funded construction projects for public and municipal spaces in Chicago must be spent on public art?
· Who are these public artists?
· Where is their art?
· How do these works reflect or “live” in a neighborhood?
· How do communities assign value to them…or not?
· Do the styles, content, media, or messages differ across Chicago’s map?
· Which art do you see from your window, your block, your el stop, your commute, your favorite places in the city?
· Can you imagine these spaces without the art? Do you imagine replacing them with different one?
This project asks you to EXPLORE public art in Chicago, using both a mirror and a window as your “lens.”
You are assigned to visit or re-visit FOUR public art works in person.
· TWO of them should be pieces that are already meaningful to you (i.e. they are in your neighborhood, you love them, you see them every day, etc.).
· The OTHER TWO should be pieces that are totally new to you (i.e. you’ve never seen them or noticed them before, you discover them along with a new neighborhood or area of the city, you seek them out because of the artist/style/medium, etc.)
Use the Chicago Public Art Guide, Year of Public Art, CTA Public Art guide, and other resources posted in the Module 3—Part 3 folder to find new pieces or research the ones you already know. Conduct further research as needed and take notes on what you expect to see or hope to find. Map out your route and go!Step 2: Visit and Explore
When you arrive at each piece, SPEND TIME with it! Move around it, touch it (if allowed), sit for a while, notice how others respond to it, observe what’s around it. Use principles for analyzing visual art to organize your observations and reflect on how the piece impacts you as the view and visitor. Take notes, write in a journal, TAKE PICTURES.
Step 3: Share and Enlighten Us!
After you have visited all four public art locations, write a TOUR GUIDE to share with us!

Art is a provocative medium, and your challenge in writing about art may often be to define and
evaluate the artist’s choices and techniques, which, according to your intellect and perception, arouse interest
and convey meaning. In most cases you will be translating the visual (what you see) into language (what you
write). In order to do this, you will have to be extremely attentive to the characteristics of the work—which
means that description will incorporate a portion of your essay—and be attentive to the vocabulary of the
discipline of Art.
You must also be able to develop a thesis statement with a detailed analysis and argument about the
artwork you have chosen. Therefore, you must consider what it is you want to say, and use description to
make that point. In many ways, writing an Art History essay is similar to writing other types of essays in the
Humanities. It requires a clear and focused topic, an arguable thesis, an organized format and structure, clear
and coherent paragraphs, and a command of grammar and style.
Thesis Statement
Most academic essays seek to persuade readers to understand a specific issue in a specific way—the
writer’s way. The writer’s thesis statement offers this substantial but concise assertion of her/his
understanding (usually in one to two sentences in the introduction or near the beginning of the essay), thereby
providing an essay with its judgmental focus.
Perhaps, though, in writing about art you might want to offer a well thought-out central idea rather
than an overtly argumentative statement. For example, “African art was a major influence on the work of
Pablo Picasso” states a well-documented and widely shared opinion that is interesting but uncontroversial.
Of course, a paper on this topic would have to fully elaborate on that relationship and offer examples of it.
The difference between an idea and a thesis statement is in their degree of contention. The above
example of a central idea could be debatable, but mainly the disagreement would arise if the writer does not
adequately explain and illustrate the idea through detailed description, intelligent criticism, and analysis,
and not because of the idea itself.
However, in a thesis statement—such as, “Picasso’s treatment of women in his art mirrors the
distorted vision he had of women in general”—it is more obvious that readers will either strongly disagree or
agree, by the very nature of the claim itself. Moreover, even if the writer advances a stimulating argument
with impressive evidence in defense of the thesis, because the claim is so contentious, a reader may still
disagree.

using primary or secondary sources, remember to explain and analyze the passages that you have chosen from

Comparison and Contrast
In many beginning Art History courses, and in more advanced ones as well, you

works of art. This type of essay usually requires a substantial comparative judgment of the two works, which will function as your thesis statement.
One option for a thesis statement for this kind of comparative essay could be based on how you see the two works in relation to each other and to some aspect of the human condition, or culture, or history. It could be, for example, that both artists painted peasants working in a field, but one painting suggests the oneness of humans and nature, perhaps because the figures appear to be an integral part of the field in which they are working, while the other painting emphasizes the separation between humans and nature. The evidence you provide for your thesis will include your interpretation, analysis, and description of the characteristics of both works, and must at all times relate to your thesis. For example, if you are discussing horizontality or verticality, you need to first accurately and clearly describe these elements in both works and then evaluate how these visual orientations demonstrate the validity of your thesis concerning humans as a part of nature or separate from it.
Unless the assignment specifies a work-by-work approach, it is usually best that

Five Simple Steps
I. Select the two works of art from European culture during the time period covered by this course from two different categories:
· Visual art, including sculpture, mosaics, painting, architecture, and other forms
· Literature, including poetry, a play, fiction, and other forms
· Music in what we think of as the Classical tradition (not popular or folk songs), including forms such as the suite, oratorio, mass, motet, opera, formal dance or ballet music, chorale, and so forth. Some of these works are lengthy, so you may listen to and write about a section or movement of a longer work if you choose. For example, rather than write about Handel’s entire three-hour oratorio, The Messiah, you could write about one section such as the aria, “I know that my Redeemer liveth.”
Example: In your paper, you may want to write about a sculpture (i.e., visual art) by the Classical Greek sculptor Praxiteles and a magnifcat, a choral religious work (i.e., music), by the Italian Renaissance composer Palestrina. Or you may want to write about verses by the Archaic Greek poet Sappho (i.e., literature) and a suite by the English Renaissance composer John Dowland (i.e., music).
II. Craft an introduction that gives your reader the WHAT and the WHY.

III. Include a brief background.
In the body of your paper, as you compare and contrast the works, provide the vital background information that is crucial for your reader in understanding the two works, which include your own personal observations, thoughts, and reflections on both works.
IV. Compare and Contrast the Works
· Discuss similarities between the two works by pointing out what they have in common in the body of your paper. This may be challenging, since we are not used to comparing, say, music with art, or architecture with poetry. But see where your ideas and imagination take you!
· Discuss differences between the two works in the body of your paper using words such as “unlike,” “whereas,” and so on. What about the two works strikes you as decidedly different? Not just the form; of course, music is different from a painting!

This is an assignment to help you recognize visual elements and principles of design in works of art. For this assignment, you are to discuss the form, content, and subject matter of a work of art and how they relate to each other.
This is not a research paper, you will not need to do additional research. This paper is about looking and seeing, and is based on your observations of the visual elements and principles of design from Chapters 3 and 4, Style in Chapter 5, and the discussion of the relationship between form and content from Chapter 2.

Introduction:
In the first paragraph, called the introduction, you will include:
An identification of the work of art you selected: The name of the artist, title (which is underlined or italicized every time you use the title in your paper), date, and medium.
Your initial interpretation of the subject - what is this piece about?
A very brief visual description of the work.
Thesis statement - usually the last line or so of your first paragraph clarifying the type of paper you are writing. What is this assignment, therefore your paper, about?
Description:
Your formal analysis should include a description of the piece using terminology (Visual Elements and Principles of Design in the order they are listed in the outline provided), and details of the work that have led you to come to some understanding of what the artist is communicating. Your analysis should have a sense of order, moving purposefully through your description, from one term to the next, with regard to each specific element. How do the visual elements and principles of design work within the work of art to create the meaning you are addressing? Remember that your analysis should not be just a mechanical, physical description. Please use descriptive language and adjectives to describe your work.
To aid in writing a formal analysis, you should think as if you were describing the work of art to someone who has never seen it before. What do you see? When your reader finishes reading your analysis, she/he should have a complete mental picture of what the work lo.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
