ESSA creates
flexibility allowing

fully explore and

Research
indicates that

significantly
to a student’s

readiness.
Thirty years ago, in response to a K-12
public education system defined by
mediocrity1, with low student test scores
and widening gaps in achievement, the
accountability movement was born.
Federal and state education policies
focused on raising standards and
regularly assessing students. However,
over the years, many policymakers
and the public observed a connection
between the accountability movement
and an overemphasis on testing in
core subjects, such as English and
math, a narrowing of curricula and the
elimination of many important subjects,
including the arts.
Arts education
fosters critical deeper
learning skills, such
as collaboration and
perseverance, in
students.
Yet, research consistently shows that
arts education and the integration of
the arts into core subjects can have
dramatic effects on student success
— defined not just by student test
scores, but also critical skills, such as
creativity, teamwork and perseverance.
Research indicates that these skills
can be as effective predictors of long-
term success in college, careers and
citizenship as test scores.2,3
The Every Student Succeeds Act
(ESSA), which passed in late 2015, is
the first major federal law in more than
30 years offering states a significant
degree of flexibility to broaden —
rather than narrow — curricula, and
strongly encourages states to ensure all
students have access to a well-rounded
education, which includes the arts
and music.4 Armed with the evidence

Education
Deeper Learning
The arts — including dance, music, theatre, media arts
and visual arts — bolster the development of what are
commonly referred to as deeper learning skills. Deeper
learning is an umbrella term defining the skills and
knowledge students need to attain success in college,
career and citizenship. Students that possess deeper
learning skills6:
1. Master core academic content.
2. Think criti.
A growing body of research shows that arts-based teaching and learning has the power to energize and promote student engagement by increasing opportunities for students to articulate their learning in many different ways. It is particularly effective for students who tend to struggle with the fast-paced and highly structured nature of mainstream education, which favours primarily cognitive and verbal forms of teaching and assessment. This study contributes to the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) by reporting on the learning experiences of third-year child and youth care (CYC) students involved in an arts-based self-portrait assignment.

This is a presentation I gave at Pecha Kucha #4 at 21C in Louisville during the summer of 2011. I identify some basic simple things you can substitute in your diet that are vegan alternatives. It doesn't have to be "all or nothing". You do not have to become a vegan to substitute some of your products with animal-free alternatives. Every little bit counts!!!!
Presentation for pre-service elementary teachers. Asking them to consider themselves as being a part of the "future studies" movement. Introduction of future studies as an emerging interdisciplinary academic field. Emphasis on visual thinking, visual pedagogy, and images associated with science and other disciplinary domains. How teaching with visual methods, images, and using techniques to develop the imagination can impact our future experience on earth. Highlights artists who are working in a highly cross-disciplinary context to establish "Ohio Valley Creative Energy" in Southern Indiana which will be a fire arts facility powered by methane gas from a landfill and also doing ecological and environmental education.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Methodology for Learning Five Ways to Integrate
4. Art integration can be used as a tool to
deepen understanding as well as enhance
communication skills.
Art integration extends student
understanding by providing a context that
connects the subject matter in real,
concrete, relevant ways.
Research shows that in art-integrated
classrooms students score higher on
achievement tests, and demonstrate an
increase in critical thinking skills, self-
confidence, and retention.
5. Study in 2001-2002 of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade
students shows a significant positive
relationship between arts integration and
student learning.
Research shows that students who have
taken art classes score have higher
math, verbal, and composite SAT scores than
students who do not.
6. Meets the needs of visual and kinesthetic
learners
Meets multiple needs with one lesson
Allows students to actively engage in their
learning
Promotes higher level thinking
Can positively influence learning and test

More exposure, better results.
Meaningful use of art.
