Autism

In this chapter, Kenny, Dinehart, and Winick provided a case study of the treatment of a 10-year-old boy diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ADS). Kenny et al. described the rationale and theory behind the use of child-centered play therapy (CCPT) in the treatment of a child with ASD. Specifically, children with ADS often have sociobehavioral problems that can be improved when they have a safe therapy space for expressing themselves emotionally through play that assists in their interpersonal development. There is a gap in understanding the possibilities of implementing such programs in schools to foster the social and mental health of children with autism. The six articles I selected for this assignment present research on different types of therapeutic programs that have been used to promote social interactions in children with autism.

Wimpory, D. C., & Nash, S. (1999). Musical interaction therapy – therapeutic play for children with autism. Child Language and Teaching Therapy, 15(1), 17–28. https://doi.org/10.1177/026565909901500103
Wimpory and Nash provided a case study
for implementing music interaction therapy as part of play therapy aimed at cultivating communication skills in infants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The researchers based their argument on films taken of play-based therapy sessions that introduced music interaction therapy. To assess the success of music play, Wimpory and Nash filmed the follow-up play-based interaction between the parent and the child. The follow-up interactions revealed that 20 months after the introduction of music play, the child developed prolonged playful interaction with both the psychologist and the parent. The follow-up films also revealed that the child initiated spontaneously pretend play during these later sessions. After the introduction of music, the child began to develop appropriate language skills.
Since the publication date for this case study is 1999, the results are dated. Although this study found that music interaction therapy is useful, emerging research in the field has undoubtedly changed in the time since this article was published. Wimpory and Nash wrote this article for a specific audience, including psychologists and researchers working with infants diagnosed with ASD. Their focus means that others beyond these fields may not find the findings applicable to their work.

Discrete Trial Training (DTT) effect on children with ASD
Introduction
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition that affects the development of an individual affecting their behaviour and the ability to communicate (Autism Spectrum Disorder, 2021). In most cases, this disorder exhibits its symptoms within the initial two years of an individual, despite its diagnosis being plausible for individuals of all ages. Persons diagnosed with this disorder often have repetitive behaviours and restricted interests, find it difficult to partake in social interactions and communication with others, and show other symptoms that may impede the individual's ability to perform well in school, work and several other aspects of life ("Autism Spectrum Disorder, 2021). The individuals diagnosed with the disorder will, in some cases, be reliant on their families and individuals close to them for help and support. Despite the disorder's potency as a life-long condition, some services and treatments are provided, helping an individual diagnosed with the condition improve the quality of their life. It is also important to note that the disorder has several different variations; hence, the spectrum of different characteristics, unique to every diagnosed individual.
According to studies conducted, one in fifty-four children is diagnosed with the disorder in the United States, occurring in children of all racial backgrounds and socioeconomic groups ("Data and Statistics on Autism Spectrum Disorder | CDC," 2021). According to the same report, the disease is four times more likely to occur in boys than in girls. Between 2009 to 2017, the number of children aged between 3-17 years diagnosed with development disorders, inclusive of ASD, increased from 16.2% to 17.8%. (Ünlü et al., 2018). In the use of discrete trial training (DTT), children are taught a plethora of skills, which include academic, language, and social skills, necessary to facilitate their development. In the treatment of ASD, options are limited. However, early diagnosis, coupled with behaviour interventions, is considered to have the best outcomes in managing the disorder's symptoms (Masi et al., 2017).
The prevalence of ASD in children has been noted to rise significantly in the population (Masi et al., 2017; "Data and Statistics on Autism Spectrum Disorder | CDC," 2021), affecting a larger portion of the population. This number of affected individuals is projected to rise even higher in the coming years, a problem in society that needs to be addressed. In the treatment of the disorder, drug interventions, while widely used, have failed to prove their efficiency in improving or managing symptoms in most cases (Masi et al., 2017). The treatment options for the disorder are also very limited. Introduction
Autism researchers continue to grapple with activities that best serve the purpose of fostering positive interpersonal relationships for children with autism. Children have benefited from therapy sessions that provide ongoing activities to aid their ability to engage in healthy social interactions. However, less is known about how K–12 schools might implement programs for this group of individuals to provide additional opportunities for growth, or even if and how school programs would be of assistance in the end. There is a gap in understanding the possibilities of implementing such programs in schools to foster the social and mental health of children with autism. The six articles I selected for this assignment present research on different types of therapeutic programs that have been used to promote social interactions in children with autism.

Wimpory, D. C., & Nash, S. (1999). Musical interaction therapy – therapeutic play for children with autism. Child Language and Teaching Therapy, 15(1), 17–28. https://doi.org/10.1177/026565909901500103
Wimpory and Nash provided a case study
for implementing music interaction therapy as part of play therapy aimed at cultivating communication skills in infants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The researchers based their argument on films taken of play-based therapy sessions that introduced music interaction therapy. To assess the success of music play, Wimpory and Nash filmed the follow-up play-based interaction between the parent and the child. The follow-up interactions revealed that 20 months after the introduction of music play, the child developed prolonged playful interaction with both the psychologist and the parent. The follow-up films also revealed that the child initiated spontaneously pretend play during these later sessions. After the introduction of music, the child began to develop appropriate language skills.
Since the publication date for this case study is 1999, the results are dated. Although this study found that music interaction therapy is useful, emerging research in the field has undoubtedly changed in the time since this article was published. Wimpory and Nash wrote this article for a specific audience, including psychologists and researchers working with infants diagnosed with ASD. Their focus means that others beyond these fields may not find the findings applicable to their work.

Introduction
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition that affects the development of an individual affecting their behaviour and the ability to communicate (Autism Spectrum Disorder, 2021). In most cases, this disorder exhibits its symptoms within the initial two years of an individual, despite its diagnosis being plausible for individuals of all ages. Persons diagnosed with this disorder often have repetitive behaviours and restricted interests, find it difficult to partake in social interactions and communication with others, and show other symptoms that may impede the individual's ability to perform well in school, work and several other aspects of life ("Autism Spectrum Disorder, 2021). The individuals diagnosed with the disorder will, in some cases, be reliant on their families and individuals close to them for help and support. Despite the disorder's potency as a life-long condition, some services and treatments are provided, helping an individual diagnosed with the condition improve the quality of their life. It is also important to note that the disorder has several different variations; hence, the spectrum of different characteristics, unique to every diagnosed individual.
According to studies conducted, one in fifty-four children is diagnosed with the disorder in the United States, occurring in children of all racial backgrounds and socioeconomic groups ("Data and Statistics on Autism Spectrum Disorder | CDC," 2021). According to the same report, the disease is four times more likely to occur in boys than in girls. Between 2009 to 2017, the number of children aged between 3-17 years diagnosed with development disorders, inclusive of ASD, increased from 16.2% to 17.8%. (Ünlü et al., 2018). In the use of discrete trial training (DTT), children are taught a plethora of skills, which include academic, language, and social skills, necessary to facilitate their development. In the treatment of ASD, options are limited. However, early diagnosis, coupled with behaviour interventions, is considered to have the best outcomes in managing the disorder's symptoms (Masi et al., 2017).
The prevalence of ASD in children has been noted to rise significantly in the population (Masi et al., 2017; "Data and Statistics on Autism Spectrum Disorder | CDC," 2021), affecting a larger portion of the population. This number of affected individuals is projected to rise even higher in the coming years, a problem in society that needs to be addressed. In the treatment of the disorder, drug interventions, while widely used, have failed to prove their efficiency in improving or managing symptoms in most cases (Masi et al., 2017). The treatment options for the disorder are also very limited. After conducting an investigation on the connection of social skills, adaptability limitations, emotional and behavioural challenges among school children (Pack, C.J, et al., 2012) came to the conclusion that, kids diagnosed with autism had challenges related to daily social skills and behavioural complications. He proposed that physical conversation abilities are mostly related to practical and developmental effects rather than basic communication skills. However, according to a study by (Tager-Flusberg, et al., 2010) and (Ellawadi, A.B, et al., 2015), from their investigation on socialisation abilities of autistic toddlers and the variances in variables assumed to affect communication advancements at various ideal stages. They organised the toddler’s based on verbal communication standards to survey the variances on the chosen variables through the standardisation groupings. From the investigation they found that verbal communication standards are essential in describing premature communication outlines as well as determining factors that affect effective language development.
Besides, (Ellis Weimer, et al., 2010) described premature socialisation abilities among children suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD, n=257) by use of multiple communication advancement measures, in comparison to children with non-spectrum Developmental Delay (DD, N=69. Results of ASD presented substantial variance in the outline of receptive-sensitive communication skills for autism children in comparison to the development delay (DD). Another study by (Drew, A, et al 2007) through the means of Social Communication Assessment for Toddlers with Autism (SCATA) which measured communication skills on the two groups of children found to be suffering from the autism spectrum disorder came to the conclusion that the regularity and persistence of verbal acts of communications during childhood determined their communication abilities in the future. Autism is a complicated progressive disability. Researchers think that Autism exhibits itself during the age of 18 to 36 months old. The illness is the effect of a neurological condition that has an influence on natural brain performance, effecting promotion of the individual’s social and communication abilities. A student with an autism disorder will have a problem with non-verbal skills, and difficulty with activities which involve an environment of play and/or joking. They could have uncommon replies to society, connections to items, refusal to accept an adjustment in their daily routines, and severe behavior challenges.

I am Interested in understanding Autism behavior challenges to improve classroom management. As a Special Education teacher understanding Autism behaviors can be very beneficial. A projection of 1 in every 68 citizens in the country has various types of autism; boys are more prevalent than girls. Several professionals think that this (ASD) is linked hereditary or through the atmosphere. Studies show in a classroom of 18 or more. Typically, at least two of the classroom children for each one student are diagnosed with (ASD). Children with (ASD) show disruptive behaviors, and many of them have problems like harming self and anger tantrum. Behaviors form anxiety for parents and specialists, because it inconsistent with the development of desired behaviors and communication skills (DSM-5, 2013), and have risks on child himself and others. Findings show after researching over a hundred teachers in a public major school of students who strugglers with ASDs.
Lack of classroom management, and inconsistent strategies played a huge factor in behaviors. An effort to be made by schools to address the teacher’s perception of causes of challenging behavior as it has an influence on their choice of management strategies. Also, the teachers agreed that the behavior was learned,
and could be improved, but they did not often use strategies that are commonly considered to be effective, at least within the fields of ABA and PBS (Baron, Groden, & Lipsitt 2006). Consistency and reinforcement, they are solutions for resolving occurring behaviors, which increase the likelihood that behavior will continue to occur or occur more often (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2007).

However, according to a study by (Tager-Flusberg, et al., 2010) and (Ellawadi, A.B, et al., 2015), from their investigation on socialisation abilities of autistic toddlers and the variances in variables assumed to affect communication advancements at various ideal stages. They organised the toddler’s based on verbal communication standards to survey the variances on the chosen variables through the standardisation groupings. From the investigation they found that verbal communication standards are essential in describing premature communication outlines as well as determining factors that affect effective language development.
Besides, (Ellis Weimer, et al., 2010) described premature socialisation abilities among children suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD, n=257) by use of multiple communication advancement measures, in comparison to children with non-spectrum Developmental Delay (DD, N=69. Results of ASD presented substantial variance in the outline of receptive-sensitive communication skills for autism children in comparison to the development delay (DD). Another study by (Drew, A, et al 2007) through the means of Social Communication Assessment for Toddlers with Autism (SCATA) which measured communication skills on the two groups of children found to be suffering from the autism spectrum disorder came to the conclusion that the regularity and persistence of verbal acts of communications during childhood determined their communication abilities in the future. Autism is a complicated progressive disability. Researchers think that Autism exhibits itself during the age of 18 to 36 months old. The illness is the effect of a neurological condition that has an influence on natural brain performance, effecting promotion of the individual’s social and communication abilities. A student with an autism disorder will have a problem with non-verbal skills, and difficulty with activities which involve an environment of play and/or joking. They could have uncommon replies to society, connections to items, refusal to accept an adjustment in their daily routines, and severe behavior challenges.

I am Interested in understanding Autism behavior challenges to improve classroom management. As a Special Education teacher understanding Autism behaviors can be very beneficial. A projection of 1 in every 68 citizens in the country has various types of autism; boys are more prevalent than girls. Several professionals think that this (ASD) is linked hereditary or through the atmosphere. Studies show in a classroom of 18 or more. Typically, at least two of the classroom children for each one student are diagnosed with (ASD). Children with (ASD) show disruptive behaviors, and many of them have problems like harming self and anger tantrum. Behaviors form anxiety for parents and specialists, because it inconsistent with the development of desired behaviors and communication skills (DSM-5, 2013), and have risks on child himself and others. Findings show after researching over a hundred teachers in a public major school of students who strugglers with ASDs.
Lack of classroom management, and inconsistent strategies played a huge factor in behaviors. An effort to be made by schools to address the teacher’s perception of causes of challenging behavior as it has an influence on their choice of management strategies. Also, the teachers agreed that the behavior was learned,
and could be improved, but they did not often use strategies that are commonly considered to be effective, at least within the fields of ABA and PBS (Baron, Groden, & Lipsitt 2006). Consistency and reinforcement, they are solutions for resolving occurring behaviors, which increase the likelihood that behavior will continue to occur or occur more often (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2007).

I am going to say something, and I want you to hear me.
I am a scholar of the Revolution. That's the topic of my dissertation. Please believe me when I say that I know a lot about it.
I also happen to know--and this is well-supported by historians--that the Revolution was a civil war in which, for the first several years, Revolutionaries and Loyalists were evenly matched.
I will repeat that. Evenly matched. Loyalists were not merely too cowardly to fight, and they were not old fogies who hated the idea of freedom. Most had been in the Colonies for generations. Many of them took up arms for their King and their country. And when they lost, you confiscated their homes and they fled with the clothes on their back to Canada, England, and other places of the Empire. Both sides--both sides--committed unspeakable atrocities against civilians whom they disagreed with.
Now, a lot of you love to repeat some very fervent patriotic diatribe about how great the Revolution was. That's not history. That's propaganda. Know the difference.
History has shades of gray. History is complex and ambiguous. Washington, for instance, wore dentures made from the teeth of his slaves. Benjamin Franklin's son was the last royal governor of New Jersey. Did you know that the net tax rate for Americans--they always conveniently leave this out of the textbooks--was between 1.9 and 2.1%, depending on colony.? And that was if they had paid the extra taxes on tea and paper.
And, wait for it, people who support California independence use the same logic and arguments as they did in 1775. Did you know that the Los Angeles and Washington are only a few hundred miles closer than Boston and London? That many of the same issues, point by point, are repeating here in California? So put yourself in those shoes. How many of you would have sided with the Empire (whether American or British) based on the fact that you don't know how this will shake out? Would you call someone who supports Calexit a Patriot? Revolutionary? Nutcase? Who gets to own that word, anyway?
You can choose that you would have supported the revolutionaries--but think. Think about the other side. They matter, and their experiences got to be cleansed out of history to make you feel better about the way the revolutionaries behaved during the War. Acknowledge that they are there, and that their point of view has merit, even if you not agree with it.

Although educational reform has had an effect on all children, it is most apparent in the early elementary years. Reform and change comes from a number of sources and the chapter begins by reminding you of this. Let’s examine a few of these sources...
Diversity. There has been a rise in the number of racial and ethnic minority students enrolled in the nation's public schools; this number will (most likely) continue to rise. Teaching children from different cultures and backgrounds is an important piece to account for when planning curriculum.
Standards. Standards is a reason for reform. We've already looked at standards; these are something you must keep in mind when planning lessons.

Violence: One issue that I notice this new edition of the text has excluded is violence. However, I think that this topic is important; we need to keep children safe when they are at school. As a result of 9/11 (and, not to mention that many violent events have happened on school campuses in recent years), many school districts now have an emergency system in place that they can easily use if there is any type of incident in which the children’s safety is at risk.

Your text explains that the best way to think of a child’s development during this time is: slow and steady. During this stage, there is not much difference between boys and girls when it comes to physical capabilities. Although it is always important to not stereotype based on one’s gender, it is especially important during these years. These children are also entering into their "tween" years, thus; being sensitive to the children's and parents' needs in regards to such changes is important.

Typically, communication breakdowns result from lack of understanding without clarification; often, there wasn't even an attempt at clarification. If barriers to interpersonal communication are not acknowledged and addressed, workplace productivity can suffer.
Language Differences
Interpersonal communication can go awry when the sender and receiver of the message speak a different language -- literally and figuratively. Not everyone in the workplace will understand slang, jargon, acronyms and industry terminology. Instead of seeking clarification, employees might guess at the meaning of the message and then act on mistaken assumptions. Also, misunderstandings may occur among workers who do not speak the same primary language. As a result, feelings may be hurt, based on misinterpretation of words or of body language.
Cultural Differences
Interpersonal communication may be adversely affected by lack of cultural understanding, mis-perception, bias and stereotypical beliefs. Workers may have limited skill or experience communicating with people from a different background. Many companies offer diversity training to help employees understand how to communicate more effectively across cultures and relate to those who may have different background experiences. Similarly, gender barriers can obstruct interpersonal communication if men and women are treated differently, and held to different standards, causing interpersonal conflicts in the workplace.
Personality Differences
Like any skill, some people are better at interpersonal communication than others. Personality traits also influence how well an individual interacts with subordinates, peers and supervisors. Extraversion can be an advantage when it comes to speaking out, sharing opinions and disseminating information. However, introverts may have the edge when it comes to listening, reflecting and remembering. Barriers to interpersonal communication may occur when employees lack self-awareness, sensitivity and flexibility. Such behavior undermines teamwork, which requires mutual respect, compromise and negotiation. Bullying, backstabbing and cut throat competition create a toxic workplace climate that will strain interpersonal relationships.
Generational Differences
Interpersonal communication can be complicated by generational differences in speech, dress, values, priorities and preferences. For instance, there may be a generational divide as to how team members prefer to communicate with one another. If younger workers sit in cubicles, using social networking as their primary channel of communication, it can alienate them from older workers who may prefer face-to-face communication. Broad generalizations and stereotypes can also cause interpersonal rifts when a worker from one generation feels superior to those who are younger or older. For this assignment, you will write a paper no less than 7 pages in length, not including required cover and Reference pages, describing a single personality theory from the course readings that best explains your own personality and life choices. You are free to select from among the several theories covered in the course to date but only one theory may be used.
Your task is to demonstrate your knowledge of the theory you choose via descriptions of its key concepts and use of them to explain how you developed your own personality. It is recommended that you revisit the material covered to date to refresh your knowledge of theory details. This is a "midterm" assignment and you should show in your work that you have studied and comprehended the first four weeks of course material. Your submission should be double-spaced with 1 inch margins on all sides of each page and should be free of spelling and grammar errors. It must include source crediting of any materials used in APA format, including source citations in the body of your paper and in a Reference list attached to the end. Easy to follow guides to APA formatting can be found on the tutorial section of the APUS Online Library.
Your paper will include three parts:
I. A brief description of the premise and key components of the theory you selected. You should be thorough and concise in this section and not spend the bulk of the paper detailing the theory, but rather just give enough of a summary of the key points so that an intelligent but uniformed reader would be able to understand its basics. If you pick a more complicated theory, you should expect explaining its premise and key components to take longer than explaining the same for one of the simpler theories but, in either case, focus on the basics and keep in mind that a paper that is almost all theory description and little use of the theory described to explain your own personality will receive a significant point deduction as will the reverse case of the paper being largely personal experience sharing with little linkage to clearly described key theory components.
II. A description of how your chosen theory explains your personality and life choices with supporting examples.
III. A description of the limitations of the theory in explaining your personality or anyone else’s.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

research continues to grapple with activities that best serve the
purpose of fostering positive interpersonal relationships for
children who struggle with autism. Children have benefited
from therapy sessions that provide ongoing activities to aid
autistic children’s ability to engage in healthy social
interactions. However, less is known about how K–12 schools
might implement programs for this group of individuals to
provide additional opportunities for growth, or even if and how
school programs would be of assistance in the end. There is a
gap, then, in understanding the possibilities of implementing
such programs in schools to foster the social and thus mental
health of children with autism.

In this chapter, Kenny, Dinehart, and Winick provided a case
study of the treatment of a 10-year-old boy diagnosed with
autism spectrum disorder (ADS). Kenny et al. described the
2. rationale and theory behind the use of child-centered play
therapy (CCPT) in the treatment of a child with ASD.
Specifically, children with ADS often have sociobehavioral
problems that can be improved when they have a safe therapy
space for expressing themselves emotionally through play that
assists in their interpersonal development. The authors outlined
the progress made by the patient in addressing the social and
communicative impairments associated with ASD. Additionally,
the authors explained the role that parents have in implementing
CCPT in the patient’s treatment. Their research on the success
of CCPT used qualitative data collected by observing the patient
in multiple therapy sessions
.
CCPT follows research carried out by other theorists who have
identified the role of play in supporting cognition and
interpersonal relationships. This case study is relevant to the
current conversation surrounding the emerging trend toward
CCPT treatment in adolescents with ASD as it illustrates how
CCPT can be successfully implemented in a therapeutic setting
to improve the patient’s communication and socialization skills.
However, Kenny et al. acknowledged that CCPT has
limitations—children with ADS, who are not highly functioning
and or are more severely emotionally underdeveloped, are likely
not suited for this type of therapy
.
Kenny et al.’s explanation of this treatments’s implementation
is useful for professionals in the psychology field who work
with adolescents with ASD. This piece is also useful to parents
of adolescents with ASD, as it discusses the role that parents
can play in successfully implementing the treatment. However,
more information is needed to determine if this program would
be suitable as part of a K–12 school program focused on the
needs of children with ASD
.
3. Stagmitti, K. (2016). Play therapy for school-age children with
high-functioning autism. In A.A. Drewes and C. E. Schaefer
(Eds.), Play therapy in middle cildhood (pp. 237–255).

Stagmitti discussed how the Learn to Play program fosters the
social and personal development of children who have high
functioning autism. The program is designed as a series of play
sessions carried out over time, each session aiming to help
children with high functioning autism learn to engage in
complex play activities with their therapist and on their own.
The program is beneficial for children who are 1- to 8-years old
if they are already communicating with others both nonverbally
and verbally. Through this program, the therapist works with
autistic children by initiating play activities, helping children
direct their attention to the activity, eventually helping them
begin to initiate play on their own by moving past the play
narrative created by the therapist and adding new, logical steps
in the play scenario themselves. The underlying rationale for
the program is that there is a link between the ability of
children with autism to create imaginary play scenarios that are
increasingly more complex and the development of emotional
well-being and social skills in these children. Study results from
the program have shown that the program is successful:
Children have developed personal and social skills of several
increment levels in a short time. While Stagmitti provided
evidence that the Learn to Play program was successful, she
also acknowledged that more research was needed to fully
understand the long-term benefits of the program.
Stagmitti offered an insightful overview of the program;
however, her discussion was focused on children identified as
having high-functioning autism, and, therefore, it is not clear if
and how this program works for those not identified as high-
functioning. Additionally, Stagmitti noted that the program is
already initiated in some schools but did not provide discussion
on whether there were differences or similarities in the success
4. of this program in that setting.
Although Stagmitti’s overview of the Learn to Play program
was helpful for understanding the possibility for this program to
be a supplementary addition in the K–12 school system, more
research is needed to understand exactly how the program might
be implemented, the benefits of implementation, and the
drawbacks. Without this additional information, it would be
difficult for a researcher to use Stigmitti’s research as a basis

Wimpory and Nash provided a case study for implementing
music interaction therapy as part of play therapy aimed at
cultivating communication skills in infants with ASD. The
researchers based their argument on films taken of play-based
therapy sessions that introduced music interaction therapy. To
assess the success of music play, Wimpory and Nash filmed the
follow-up play-based interaction between the parent and the
child. The follow-up interactions revealed that 20 months after
the introduction of music play, the patient developed prolonged
playful interaction with both the psychologist and the parent.
The follow-up films also revealed that children initiated
spontaneously pretend play during these later sessions. After the
introduction of music, the patient began to develop appropriate
language skills.
Since the publication date for this case study is 1999, the results
are dated. Although this technique is useful, emerging research
in the field has undoubtedly changed in the time since the
article was published. Wimpory and Nash wrote this article for
a specific audience, including psychologists and researchers

In general, annotated bibliographies should avoid referring to
the first or second person (I, me, my, we, our, you, and us).
Instead, students should aim to be objective and remove
themselves from annotations. However, there may be some
exceptions to this guideline. Check with your instructor if you
are unsure about whether he/she will allow you to use “I” in

focusing on models used by companies to leverage
