For each of the following three scenarios, use a chart format to
assess how each traditional theoretical perspective would best
explain the situation that a social worker would need to address.
You may create your charts in Word or another software
program of your choice. An example chart follows the three
scenarios.
Scenario 1
You are a hospital social worker who is working with a family
whose older adult relative is in end-stage renal failure. There
are no advanced directives and the family is conflicted over
what the next steps should be.
Scenario 2
You are a caseworker in a drug court. Your client has had three
consecutive dirty urine analyses. She is unemployed and has
violated her probation order.
Scenario 3
You are a school social worker. A teacher sends her 9-year-old
student to you because he reports that he has not eaten in 2 days
and there are no adults at home to take care of him.
Chart Example:
Your client, an 11-year-old girl, was removed from home
because of parental substance abuse. She is acting out in her
foster home, disobeying her foster parents and not following
their rules.

What behaviors are being reinforced? What behaviors are being
ignored or punished? What would you suggest to maintain this
placement? Would this involve working with the foster parents?
Cognitive Theory
How would you help your client to examine her thinking,
emotions, and behavior? What would this entail from a
cognitive developmental framework?
Support your assignment with a minimum of three resources.

Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration
of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing
new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your

Imperialism Newspaper Project: Imperialism and Colonialism,
1870-1914
Task:
Create a historical newspaper that covers three instances or
areas that were impacted by European imperialism between
1870 and 1914. Areas which were impacted by imperialism
include Africa, India, and Asia. In each area, the majority of the
nations or territories were taken over by one or more European
countries. Use the internet, the EBook Chapter 20 pp. 610-622,
and/or the information in the Imperialism Learning Materials
Module to help narrow your focus or topic. Then, research 3
areas or instances of European imperialism and create 3 news
articles illustrating your knowledge.
Assignment:
1) Imagine you have been chosen to write 3 articles for a
newspaper on Imperialism. Create a name for your newspaper.
Include images and stories for each topic. (1 image per story).
Use the internet and/or Chapter 20 in the EBook for additional
research.
2) News stories should be written as if you lived during that
time period. You have some creative license, but the newspaper
must be based on historical facts. Information should be written
in your own words! Articles should be a minimum of 3
paragraphs (Introduction, Body and Conclusion).
3) One of your 3 news articles must be an interview with a
historical character from the same time period as one of your
news articles.
4) News articles should have titles that grab the attention of the
audience and a byline. A byline is a short phrase that indicates
the name of the author.
5) Finally, your newspaper should feature 1 advertisement for
an item developed between 1850 and 1914 to illustrate your
knowledge of industrial developments which took place during
that time period. The advertisement must feature an image of
the item.
6) You may use the Newspaper templates available in Microsoft
Word or any free web based service to create the newspaper.
7) See the newspaper rubric for grading details.
8) Include a bibliography or list of website URL’s used for
research.
9) Examples of topics or areas for further investigation: the
scramble for Africa, the British in India, the Boer War, etc.

Readings
Negative Effects of the Industrial Revolution:
The growth of large-scale industry had many positive results.
However, serious problems or negative effects also arose in the
late 1800s and early 1900s. Some of the negative effects of the
industrial revolution are listed below.
• Work hours were long - 10 to 12 hour work days were
common, often with work on Saturdays. Workers could take
breaks for meals, but such long work days were exhausting.
• Pay was low - $1.00 or $1.50 a day was common for men -
it was less for women and much less for children. It was
enough to support a single man or woman at that time, but not a
family. (That pay rate would be roughly equal, in what it could
buy, to between $25 and $35 a day in today's money.)
• Unsafe working conditions existed in many factories and
mines, and few laws or safety regulations existed at that time to
protect workers.
• Child labor was common in many industries. Factory
owners hired children because they would work for lower wages
than adults.
An underlying social belief in unregulated capitalistic market
forces prevented many governments from addressing social
issues. As a result, the economic theories of socialism and
communism emerged.

Readings Negative Effects of the Industrial Revolution: The growth of large-scale industry had many positive results. However, serious problems or negative effects also arose in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Some of the negative effects of the industrial revolution are listed below.

    • Work hourswere long - 10 to 12 hour work days were common, often with work on Saturdays. Workers could take breaks for meals, but such long work days were exhausting. • Pay was low - $1.00 or $1.50 a day was common for men - it was less for women and much less for children. It was enough to support a single man or woman at that time, but not a family. (That pay rate would be roughly equal, in what it could buy, to between $25 and $35 a day in today's money.) • Unsafe working conditions existed in many factories and mines, and few laws or safety regulations existed at that time to protect workers. • Child labor was common in many industries. An underlying social belief in unregulated capitalistic market forces prevented many governments from addressing social issues. As a result, the economic theories of socialism and communism emerged.
