PACER is a system that allows users to interact with paper documents using a cell phone in a seamless way. It uses computer vision techniques and hybrid camera-touch gestures to link physical paper to digital information and interactions. Some key features include allowing fine-grained interaction at the word/character level, semi-real-time processing to handle camera inputs, and hybrid gestures combining embodied gestures and touch inputs. A preliminary user study found the approach was well received and recognition accuracy was over 80%, though further work is needed to improve interactions.

In this paper, we investigate the privacy implications of shared context cues in social networking services. We present an experimental mobile application, which allows users to add different descriptions of context information to their Facebook and Twitter status updates. The application was used by 12 persons during a two-week user trial using their own devices and Facebook accounts. The results indicate that user-defined abstractions of context items were often preferred over more accurate indicators due to privacy concerns or discomfort in sharing. We also found out that using shared context from friends in vicinity needs careful design to overcome the extended privacy implications.

These slides discuss how improvements in ICs, MEMS, cameras, and other electronic components are making wearable computing and new forms of human-computer interfaces economically feasible. Improvements in digital signal processing ICs and MEMS-based microphones are rapidly improving the technical and economical feasibility of voice-recognition based interfaces. Improvements in 2D and 3D image sensors (e.g., camera ICs) are rapidly improving the technical and economical feasibility of gesture-based interfaces, augmented reality, and virtual reality. Improvements in ICs, MEMS, displays and other components are rapidly making many forms of wearable computing economically feasible; these include many forms of head, arm, torso, and leg-mounted displays. Improvements in the materials for both non-invasive and invasive brain scans are rapidly improving the technical and economical feasibility of neural interfaces.

The information design, regarded as the act of creating usable messages, has a direct application on designing graphic user interfaces. In this regard, it is possible to consider schematic visualization as an option for users to unload cognitively through more stress on the visual characteristics of the interface. This represents a way to apply the Calm Technology paradigm proposed by Mark Weiser. By considering the level of iconicity conveyed into an interface of this nature, the understanding of how schematics works on the interface should be evaluated under a different approach rather than a traditional usability evaluation, for example by doing a communicability test (from the Semiotic Engineering theory). Thus, this paper describes the overall process to design and evaluation of an instant messaging client under these considerations and it also introduces a standpoint for interface design based on the three rhetorical appealing modes.
