Distributed energy resources (DER) based micro grid and Nano-grid framework is most technically viable bottom-top approach to sustainably meet ever-increasing demand of rural and urban communities. Recently the growth of DC operative home appliances like mobile and lap top chargers, ovens and hair dryer’s etc. are increasing and therefore a DC/DC converter is an efficient way to meet the electricity need from the local DER and helps in improving the system efficiency. This paper presents simulation results of a buck boost converter, MPPT algorithm (P & O method) for solar PV module and closed loop PI control system for obtaining constant 12 V and 24 V DC output voltage at DC bus. The proposed methodology is to extract maximum DC power from solar PV system and it is directly fed to DC load or DC Nano grid.

The aim of this work is to improve the power quality for Distributed Generation (DG) with power storage system. Power quality is the combination of voltage quality and current quality. Power quality is the set of limits of electrical properties that allows electrical systems to function in their intended manner without significant loss of performance or life. The electrical power quality is more concerned issue. The main problems are stationery and transient distortions in the line voltage such as harmonics, flicker, swells, sags and voltage asymmetries. Distributed Generation (DG) also called as site generation, dispersed generation, embedded generation, decentralized generation, decentralized energy or distributed energy, generates electricity from the many small energy sources. In recent years, micro electric power systems such as photovoltaic generation systems, wind generators and micro gas turbines, etc., have increased with the deregulation and liberalization of the power market. Under such circumstances the environment surrounding the electric power industry has become ever more complicated and provides high-quality power in a stable manner which becomes an important topic. Here DG is assumed to include Wind power Generation (WG) and Fuel Cells (FC), etc. Advantages of this system are constant power supply, constant voltage magnitude, absence of harmonics insupply voltage, un-interrupted power supply. In this project the electric power qualities in two cases will be compared. Case I: With the storage battery when it is introduced. Case II: Without the storage battery. The storage battery executes the control that maintains the voltage in the power system. It will be found that the Electric power quality will be improved, when storage battery is introduced. The model system used in this Project work is composed of a Wind Turbine, an Induction Generator, Fuel Cells, An Inverter and a Storage Battery. A miniature Wind Power Generator is represented by WG. A fuel cell module is represented by FC. Transmission lines will be simulated by resistors and coils. The combined length of the lines from synchronous generator to the load terminal is 1.5 km. This model will be simulated using Matlab/Simulink

In the last twenty years, electric vehicles have gained significant popularity in domestic transportation. The introduction of fast charging technology forecasts increased the use of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and electric vehicles (PHEVs). Reduced total harmonic distortion (THD) is essential for a distributed power generation system during the electric vehicle (EV) power penetration. This paper develops a combined controller for synchronizing photovoltaic (PV) to the grid and bidirectional power transfer between EVs and the grid. With grid synchronization of PV power generation, this paper uses two control loops. One controls EV battery charging and the other mitigates power quality disturbances. On the grid connected converter, a multicarrier space vector pulse width modulation approach (12-switch, three-phase inverter) is used to mitigate power quality disturbances. A Simulink model for the PV-EV-grid setup has been developed, for evaluating voltage and current THD percentages under linear and non-linear and PHEV load conditions and finding that the THD values are well within the IEEE 519 standards

This paper explores the interconnection of large scale Photo-Voltaic (PV) systems to the grid though a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link. HVDC link is recently utilized for transmission lines longer than 50 km. It is usually utilized to interconnect two asynchronous grids with the same or different frequencies while avoiding stability disturbances greatly. A suitable Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) techniques is employed to control the performance of the integrated PV system. The system of the HVDC link has two 12-pulse converter using thyristor-bridges. The delay and the extinction angles at the rectifier and the inverter units control the flow and the quantity of the transmitted power from the PV system into the grid. Fixed capacitors and filters are used to provide the AC side with the required reactive power and reduce the harmonic contents. For evaluation purposes, different simulation investigations are carried out with a detailed modeling using the MATLAB. These tests corroborate the efficacy of HVDC link for integrating large PV systems to electrical grids

The energy consumption of urban railway stations is very large and ever increasing. To reduce the national electrical grid consumption, the first step is optimizing the equipment size and the second step is adding other available electrical sources like the train residual braking energy. Many of local energies productions use Direct Current (DC. The actual internal station grid is in Alternative Current (AC) but the majority of the equipment has an AC/DC converter to be supplied in DC. This paper describes the project led by Efficacity Institute, which addresses the use of additional existing energies and to develop a more adapted station grid to reducing the daily energy consumption peak. One Efficacity energetic concept aims to store the braking energy of the trains with a stationary electrical saving system. This energy is integrated to the power supply of a railway station thanks to a micro grid. First step of this micro grid are studied in this paper to develop the more adapted grid structure

Electricity, a remarkable scientific gift to humanity, has fuelled a civilization where it is utilized for myriad purposes. Nevertheless, a paradigm shift is underway in recent times, transitioning from small generating units to large generating plants connected to distribution systems in the form of renewable energy powered micro grids. Reactive power in networks has different alignment and efficiency based on the power factor and setup stage. These rows can be classified as passive networks of independent variables based on the sequence inductance and shunting power of the rows. The reactive power flow does, however, have a number of drawbacks. By raising the attracted line at the same charge rate, it effectively lowers the attracted lines efficiency, service, and costs. This also decreases the proportion of energy stabilization. This article presents the modeling of hybrid micro grids for power system configuration performed in the MATLAB SIMULINK environment. The present work mainly covers the network operation mode of hybrid network. Models have been developed for all converters to maintain a stable system under various load and source conditions, and the control mechanism has also been studied. A Power quality problem is an occurrence of nonstandard voltage, current or frequency that results in a failure or a misoperation of end user equipments. Utility distribution networks, sensitive industrial loads and critical commercial operations suffer from various types of outages and service interruptions which can cost significant financial losses. With the increase in load demand, the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are increasingly connected in the distribution systems which utilizes power electronic Converters/Inverters. This paper presents a single-stage, three-phase grid connected solar photovoltaic (SPV) system. The proposed system is dual purpose, as it not only feeds extracted solar energy into the grid but it also helps in improving power quality in the distribution system. The presented system serves the purpose of maximum power point tracking (MPPT), feeding SPV energy to the grid, harmonics mitigation of loads connected at point of common coupling (PCC) and balancing the grid currents. The SPV system uses a three-phase voltage source converter (VSC) for performing all these functions. An improved linear sinusoidal tracer (ILST)-based control algorithm is proposed for control of VSC. In the proposed system, a variable dc link voltage is used for MPPT. An instantaneous compensation technique is used incorporating changes in PV power for fast dynamic response. The SPV system is first simulated in MATLAB along with Simulink and simpower system toolboxes.

Renewable energy resources (RES) are being increasingly connected in distribution systems utilizing power electronic converters. This paper presents a novel control strategy for achieving maximum benefits from these grid-interfacing inverters when installed in 3-phase 4-wire distribution systems. The inverter is controlled to perform as a multi-function device by incorporating active power filter functionality. The inverter can thus be utilized as: 1) power converter to inject power generated from RES to the grid, and 2) shunt APF to compensate current unbalance, load current harmonics, load reactive power demand and load neutral current. All of these functions may be accomplished either individually or simultaneously. With such a control, the combination of grid-interfacing inverter and the 3-phase 4-wire linear/non-linear unbalanced load at point of common coupling appears as balanced linear load to the grid. This new control concept is demonstrated with extensive MATLAB/Simulink simulation studies and validated through digital signal processor-based laboratory experimental results.
