New allegations
from former
pupil as abuse
probe continues
By RICHARD EVANS
INQUIRY: Rydal School is
continuing to investigate
claims of child abuse in
the 1970s and 80s.
A COLWYN Bay school is continuing its investigation amid
more claims of child abuse during
the 1970s and 80s.
This week another former pupil of
Rydal contacted the Weekly News
claiming to have reported the matter to
the school during the 70s.
The man, who is now in his 50s and
lives in North Wales, says he and
others made several complaints to the
boarding school on Pwllycrochan Avenue during the early to mid 1970s.
In a statement this week the school
says it is continuing its investigation
and is advising any other claims of
abuse to be reported to both the school
and North Wales Police.
Current
headmaster
Patrick
Lee-Browne commented: “To the best
of my knowledge no new action has
been taken by any former pupils to
make a report to the police or seek any
other formal remedy
.
“The school’s investigation remains
ongoing, and I can only respond to
information from other former pupils
if they make me aware of it by contacting me either as well as, or instead
of, the press.
“
Any information will, of course, be
treated sensitively and confidentially
for the purposes of my investigation,
and will help me to get the fullest
possible picture of the allegations.
“I encourage former pupils to contact me or the police if they feel that is
the appropriate course of action.”
Several former pupils have come forward in recent weeks complaining of
abuse by more than one member of
staff at the school in the 1970s and
80s.
Whilst the school is investigating the
matter, none of those who claim they
were abused or say they witnessed it
wish to instigate a police investigation,
although North Wales Police has been
informed.
All the former members of staff accused are now deceased and all claims
of abuse are historical.

Organisers said the Ploughman’s

Pat Preston, senior church steward,
said: “This was an extremely pleasing
figure which was an increase on last
year’s total – particularly welcome
when many folk are having to tighten
their belts.”
