Bullying is a serious problem among American youth, with statistics showing that it is the third leading cause of death for those aged 15-24. Many students avoid school due to bullying, while others attend in a state of anxiety or depression. Reports indicate that the majority of American youth witness bullying daily, and over a third have engaged in bullying behavior themselves, defined as repeated teasing, threats, hitting or exclusion. A study in Massachusetts found that half of all middle school students had been bullied in the past year.

2. • Statistics indicate suicide is the third leading cause of death for
youth between the age of 15 and 24 years old
• Each day an estimated 160,000 students in the US refuse to go
to school because they dread the physical and verbal aggression
of their peers. Many more attend school in a chronic state of
anxiety and/or depression.
• It is reported that 6 out of 10 American youth witness at least
one bullying incident each day.
• According to the 2008 Metrowest Adolescent Health Survey,
one in three youth (35%) report that they have bullied others.
Bullying defined as being repeatedly teased, threatened, hit,
kicked, or excluded by another student or group of students.
Also, half of all middle school students in Metrowest Boston
reported being bullied at least once in the previous 12 months.
