ORAL ADMINISTRATION
Introduction
In this presentation, we will explore various oral drug delivery methods,
focusing on the unique features of Lamictal Chewable Dispersible Tablets and
Didanosine Chewable Dispersible Tablets.
Lamictal Chewable
Dispersible Tablets
• Lamictal offers tailored chewable options with
different strengths. It includes essential inactive
ingredients for proper delivery.
• Users have the flexibility to choose between
swallowing, chewing, or mixing the tablet in water
or fruit juice.
Lamictal Chewable
Dispersible Tablets
• Lamotrigine, an antiepileptic drug, is available in
standard swallow tablets in strengths of 25, 100,
150, and 200mg, containing lactose, magnesium
stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone,
sodium starch glycolate, and coloring agents.
Lamictal Chewable
Dispersible Tablets
• Chewable tablets can be swallowed whole, chewed, or mixed with water
or diluted fruit juice. For chewing, a small amount of water aids
swallowing. To disperse, add a small amount of liquid, mix, and
administer immediately.
Lamictal Chewable
Dispersible Tablets
• Didanosine (Videx) is a synthetic purine nucleoside analog
active against HIV, available in three dosage forms:
chewable dispersible buffered tablets, buffered powder for
oral solution, and pediatric powder for oral solution.
• Didanosine, a compound unstable in acidic solutions,
decomposes to hypoxanthine in less than 2 minutes at a
pH below 3. It is used in chewable tablets and oral
solutions, and in enteric-coated capsules to protect it from
stomach acid.
MUCOADHESIVE
SYSTEM
• The Striant mucoadhesive testosterone buccal system is a controlled,
sustained testosterone release device that adheres to the gum or
innercheek, providing continuous systemic delivery to the patient twice
daily, with 30mg of testosterone and inactive ingredients.
• Striant hydrates and absorbs testosterone through gum and cheek
surfaces, bypassing hepatic metabolism. Initial application increases
testosterone concentration within 10-12 hours, steady-state levels after
two systems, and falls below normal within 2-4 hours.
OSMOTIC PUMP
• The Alzet is a drug delivery device used in research
laboratories for constant-rate and programmed
delivery. It consists of a flexible diaphragm, sealed
layer, and a semipermeable membrane. A tube or
catheter is inserted into the inner chamber, and the
osmotic agent dissolves in an aqueous medium.
ORAL INHALATION
• The Advair Diskus is a specially designed plastic
device with a double-foil blister strip for oral
inhalation of fluticasone propionate and salmeterol
xinafoate.
• Each blister contains 100, 250, or 500µg of fluticasone
propionate and 72.5 µg of salmeterol xinafoate salt,
equivalent to 50µg of salmeterol base. The
medication is dispersed into the patient's airstream.
ORAL INHALATION
• Fluticasone propionate inhalation powder is sold as Flovent Rotadisk 50, 100, and 250
µg for use with the Diskhaler Inhalation Device. Each blister contains 25 mg of
fluticasone propionate blended with lactose.
• The Foradil Acrolizer is a capsule dosage for oral inhalation in the Aerolizer inhaler,
containing 12 µg of formoterol fumarate and 25 mg of lactose. It works by placing the
capsule inside the inhaler well, allowing the patient to rapidly and deeply inhale the
formoterol fumarate.
• Relenza, a neuraminidase inhibitor, is used to treat influenza. It is packaged in
Rotadisks and administered using a Diskhaler. The usual dose is 2 inhalations twice
daily for 5 days, with four blisters used daily. Store at room temperature.
