Our Love Now By Martyn Lowery
An interesting idea in the poem 'Our love now' is that love can be broken and damaged. 'Our Love
Now' is a written by a poet called, Martyn Lowery, this poem is about a breaking relationship that
had two points of view. The male persona thinks that the relationship can be mended and that they
could start afresh but the female persona does not think the same. The Male uses metaphors like "
The Raging storm soon will be gone " to describe how the relationship can be repaired, whereas the
female uses metaphors like "it leaves damages in its wake "to describe how the relationship is
unrepairable and damaged. These interesting quotes are used to describe how love can be damaged
and destroyed. The idea that love can be broken is also highlighted by the use of repetition. The use
engaging metaphors to describe a relationship is similarly used in the poem Sonnet 116 to portray
that time can not alter love, this is expressed by the metaphors ... Show more content on

This helps the reader to understand that this interesting idea in this poem is cleverly highlighted by
the use of a strong metaphor which is an onion. The onion describes the effects of love and how it is
cliche. The words "its scent will cling to your fingers " is comparing love with an onion and how it
can also sting. Another quote describing the cliche expectations of love is when the author uses the
words "Not a red rose or satin heart", this is an example of jargon and is tells us that the persona
wants a more meaningful gift which is not the cliche gift of a rose or chocolates. The effective use
of an onion to describe the personas love helps the reader to understand this interesting idea of how
love is cliche. This point is also made in the poem Sonnet 116 as it also talks about how
relationships can be cliche and that people have different standards and ideas of love. The idea of
love in this poem is that love is overused and no longer has a real

Essay on "North Eastern Chinese" Stereotypes
A few decades ago, social scientists believed that only "rigid, repressed and authoritarian" people
held stereotypes (Paul 18). However, according to several recent studies, stereotypes are
unconsciously used by everyone in the world. Annie Murphy Paul proposes that stereotypes form
because people categorize others into certain groups in terms of gender, age and race, and then
evaluate them with in–group/out–group dynamics, which means that people look down upon those
who are not in their group in order to elevate themselves. Aside from the obvious differences
between humans, such as gender, Forster, Gerger and Leder (2013) propose that trivial factors like
facial expressions also influence stereotyping and contribute to people's ... Show more content on

The results showed that although the participants did not consider themselves racists, they carried
stereotypes of black people. Similar experiments were conducted to test whether people held other
stereotypes of homosexuals, elder people, and women. The results showed that people responded
faster when negative words were paired with these minority groups as well. It seems hard to believe
that everyone carries stereotypes, but from my personal experiences, I do believe so. When
introducing myself, I'd like to tell others about my hometown, Dalian. It is located in the North
Eastern part of China. However, every time my Chinese friends, who do not come from the same
region as me, find out that I am from North Eastern China, they say "You do not act like people
from North Eastern China!". I ask them why, and their answers are roughly the same: people from
North Eastern China are hard to get along with because they are quick–tempered and violent, but I
am nice and sweet. Some of my friends even believed that North Eastern China is very dangerous
because there have been many gangsters. However, when I asked them why they believed so, they
could barely give me an answer because they did not know how they came to believe in the
stereotype either. This fits perfectly with the definition of implicit stereotyping that Banaji proposed.
She defines implicit stereotyping as the process in which people know

Persuasive Essay On The Lie
The Lie All throughout history, human society has told lies. The lies may be intention or non–
intention but everyone has told a lie at least once in their lifetime. We learn from an early age of
toddler, that lying is bad. We grow older, and learn telling lies only leads to big issues. Teenagers
may tell a lie to hide the truth from their parents, a parent may tell a lie to hide the truth from the
child. Either way may it be with good intentions or not, lying is bad. The debate remains, why do we
still lie even after knowing it is wrong?
Stephanie Ericcson wrote, "All the 'isms'– racism, sexism, ageism, et al.– are founded on and fueled
by the stereotype and the cliché, which are lies of exaggeration, omission, and ignorance. They are
always dangerous. They take a single tree and make it a landscape." (Ericsson, 3). What did
Stephanie mean by this statement? Are stereotypes and the cliché the root cause of the issues in
society? Can society change these stereotypes thought process and clichés to advance to the next
level?
There are many different types of stereotypes and/or clichés, throughout society. The most obvious
stereotypes relate to race and sex. These stereotypes have been going on for so long that the chain to
unbreak them is hard. A prime example is the female or male. Females are said to be weaker
physically and mentally but stronger emotionally. While males are said to be stronger physically and
mentally but weaker emotionally. Many can analyze why this could be. May perhaps deals with our
brain and what side of the brain we are using, while others may say environment effects it. Why
others say may perhaps it's our chemical makeup to begin with. Individuals are just that individual's,
no two people are the same including the anomy of twins. Even twins are two different individuals
even having various of similarities. The impact of stereotyping and/or clichés are heavy. A female
child, grows up thinking that girls are not supposed to be able to do this or that. They are supposed
to be princesses and just look pretty. They could also hear repeating that girls are supposed to just
make babies and their place is the kitchen. The girls/ women that are subject to these types of lies
are impacted

Analysis Of The Unauthorized Autobiography Of Me By...
Sherman Alexie, the author of "The Unauthorized Autobiography of Me" should be considered an
authentic Native American and be put into a high school because he doesn't use cliches or false
representations, like the author N. Scott Momaday does, while writing about modern day events of
being a Native American. It is very important to not use cliches in literature, and show Native
Americans in a modern day perspective, because people who don't know much about Native
Americans may get the wrong idea. An article and study was done by Soli Salgado where she went
to schools around America and asked students about Native Americans. 87% of the students
portrayed them as only living around the 1900s or earlier. Having authentic modern day books about
Native Americans will help show that Native Americans are still in America today and doing well.
Another author, Debbie Reese, who criticizes authors for not being authentic in their stories will
agree. Debbie Reese explains in her article "Proceed with Caution: Using Native American Folktales
in the Classroom" that, "Through story, people pass their religious beliefs, customs, history, lifestyle,
language, values..." (Reese 245). Sherman Alexie uses his beliefs, customs, lifestyle, and family
history in his stories without using cliches. Using cliches in a Native American story shows that the
writing is inauthentic because they are using generalization and not true facts. In Sherman Alexie's

Clichers Analysis
Simultaneously, it's agreed that we've all read one to many fourth grade story endings where it was
just a dream and little Jimmy didn't actually get eaten by a tiger. Or everyone lived happily ever
after. We live in a world where one of the most hated expressions is clichés – because they seem to
lack the expression that the speaker intends to show. A cliché is deemed to be lacking of originality,
which, on its own, can seem to explain why they always get a red pen mark in the margin that says
"Really????????????" with that many question marks. And because no one wants to hear the
overused "YOLO" ever again, we've seemed to classify it as yet another cliché. Clichés are not
original and therefore, "replace the work of singular expression with the crutch ... Show more

She feels that clichés are too simple and overused, in such a way that it doesn't allow the writer's
voice to come through as sophisticated as it should. As spectators, it's thought to be nearly
impossible for an intelligent writer or speaker to sound so if they don't use fancy words like
interminable void instead of just simply stating a never–ending emptiness, as David Foster Wallace
would have. Readers and listeners are more interested in hearing exquisite words, which –
guaranteed – they don't even understand what [those words] mean, than actually just hear what a
person wants to say. Does it make a writer any less if he were to quote the cover of a greeting card
rather than Shakespeare? Living in a society that is so accustomed to conformity, it's not frequent
that a person wants to be so unique in his experiences. Jamison expresses that she hates clichés
because their lack of originality makes her words sound the same as everybody else's. The feelings
are mutual, in that I don't want my ideas to sound the same as everyone else's. When I write, I want
my voice to shine through as though the reader will know that I wrote

The Importance Of Stereotyping In Society
A stereotype is a way to determine where a person or thing falls in the realm of life. Stereotyping is
a natural part of life and it actually does have a meaning in reality. It allows a person's mind to work
properly and for the human brain to be able to recognize, process, store and then recall the
information when needed. Stereotyping is a big problem in society. It labels a person about how they
should live or act according to their sex, race, and personality. In all work forces it is a law to not
discriminate against employees or other people in the facility. It can also be used in racial, political,
religious, and many more ways. Stereotyping in a racial way is judging people by the color of their
skin, where they come from, or the language they speak. Stereotyping can be a big issue in many
professional businesses and environments. It can affect people's lives and the way of doing things.
Stereotypes also are creating a false idea of how people interact with other individuals. Many of the
stereotypes children receive are through media. People should be careful when stereotyping or just
keep their thoughts to themselves. Stereotyping will never go away because it helps humans to
process information about things and people.

The Body, By Jeanette Winterson Essay
Jeanette Winterson's novel, Written on the Body, is rich with clichés and the problems they pose.
Although clichés are unoriginal, Winterson uses them in her novel and uses language in a more
uncommon, more original way. For the narrator in the book however, has to struggle with the
limiting language there is for love and language and happiness. As Brian Finney's idea contends,
"the language and images she employs serve to undercut the clichéd situation, to place it within a
wider moral frame that depends intertextually on references ... and employs them to rejuvenate the
jaded language of love" (Finney 26). Here Winterson recognizes the trouble with clichés and tries to
go past that by referencing vastly different sciences and analogies and even the Bible. All of this is
an attempt to point out that clichés are unoriginal and lead to unhappiness, and in the case of this
book, through love and marriage.
Winterson is huge on the cliché of marriage. Marriage has become the cliché that once you and your
partner say 'I do' then you'll both live happily ever after. It has become such a huge milestone that it
is viewed at as an accomplishment of life. The rings and the marriage itself are a way to show off
wealth and happiness, and now a day, social media has become the new means off showing off the
couple's happiness. This performance is how it is reinforced in our culture that marriage with Mr. or
Miss Right will lead to happiness. This is not always the case however. The

Summary Of H. M. Irwing's Curve Couture
Curve Couture by H. M. Irwing starts with Claire Williams royally messing up! Claire has always
stuck out in the cutthroat world of modeling, and being a plus sized woman surrounded by svelte
and hunky supermodels day in and day out has done a number on her self–confidence. What started
as commiseration and comfort with her sister's fiancé, Colin, swiftly became her first time going all
the way. Claire is consumed by guilt for betraying her sister, Janice. The problem is that Janice, a
well–known supermodel, is also Claire's one and only client. Upon deciding that she can no longer
represent her sister after her ultimate betrayal, Claire approaches retired male supermodel turned
agent, Erin Robertson. She begs Erin to take on Janice as a client; however, Erin refuses and shocks
Claire by asking to sign her on as a plus sized model instead.
What follows is a swift and awkwardly produced romance between Claire and Erin. Claire, who has
never attracted male attention until her slip up with Colin, has suddenly become desirable in the
eyes of all single, straight men who cross her path. Erin is no different as he works to mold Claire

common in speech and writing that we often are not even aware of it. But it is the responsibility of
everyone to become conscious of and write without bias. The following guideline will help you to

Summary Of The Scarlet Pimpernel
The hero of the treetop kingdom was on yet another perilous journey. He traveled through the most
treacherous of lands to save the princess of the kingdom, princess Onion, who was taken away by
the evil and monstrous king, lord Gradion. When the hero finally arrived, he and the evil king faced
off in a duel that led to the king's defeat. The hero saves the princess once again, and seeing how
brave he was, she marries him, and they live happily ever after. In countless stories like these, the
damsel in distress is mainly a flat character with no intention other than to have to face a conflict,
which most of the time is getting kidnapped, and to only get saved from, and possibly fall for, the
hero. Throughout history, there has been at least one character that has this trait in books like The
Odyssey, and The Count of Monte Crisco, but one story that spares female characters from this trait
is the Scarlet Pimpernel, written by Baroness Orczy.
The Scarlet Pimpernel, published in 1905, is a tale of an englishman who saves aristocrats from the
violent government that was France. He saves many people: women, men, children, and even elders
from the corrupt ways of the French government through clever, thought out plans, the ability to
exploit any situation to help his own tactics, and multiple disguises to help carry out the plans he
concocted. During the story, it introduces a character with the name of Marguerite Bakely, the wife
of Percy Bakely. Marguerite, as it's

Stereotyping Stereotypes
"A stereotype may be negative or positive, but even positive stereotypes present two problems: They
are cliches, and they present a human being as far more simple and uniform than any human being
actually is." said Nancy Kress, an American fiction writer. We treat people the way we do because of
stereotypes, a stereotype is an overlooked opinion about people. It's not necessarily a bad thing.
Even when we don't realize it, we are making assumptions about people as we walking down the
street or passing in the hall. We wear a mask when we change our identity because it isn't who we
truly are. The way we treat people can be caused by negative stereotypes and the way people feel
about their identity after they have been stereotyped. One way we treat people the way we do is
because of stereotypes. We are always judging, whether it is a picture someone just posted, or even a
movie. We judge everything, and it's not a bad thing. In the article "Why Do We Still Allow
Stereotypes To Affect The Way We Treat People?" it says that our brains are programmed to judge
things to process everyday sights. It is a fact that stereotypes form this way. When we meet someone
that fits a certain stereotype, our brains automatically form an opinion. Our brain wants to place
them in a specific box where everybody is the same. But when a person doesn't fit into that specific
box, it causes a negative stereotype. The article also says that with it being 2016/2017, we should
use the research we

The Importance Of Racism In Society
Living in the world, we all would love to live a place where we are respected, valued, and
appreciated. However, life is not always like the way we dream because racism is still happing and it
has a great influence on our everyday lives. Unfortunately, nowadays some of us are not still treated
equally. I am wondering why we can't get along with one another and why we cannot treat one
another who are unlike with us with respect and appreciate. We all know their differences play an
important role in our everyday lives because they are a significant part in our communities.
Nevertheless, why we can't create an environment "where all kinds of people feel comfortable
showing up, secure in the knowledge that they have a place they don't have to defend every time
they turn around" (Johnson, 2006, p.5). Currently, there are several crashes around the issue of our
differences, and those crashes totally have a great impact on families.
The first theory about racism is we tend to judge other people by the way they look. In the movie
Crash, Haggis (2005) showed us the issues relate to discrimination that are happening in our lives
such as Jean asked her husband to have the locks changed again because she could not trust with the
locksmith, Daniel who is tattooed Latino. She treated him as a gang member even she did not know
anything about his background. Honestly, having a tattoo does not mean he is a gangster. Her

The Oppression Of Cliches In Today's Society
It may seem cliche, but many cliches are what they are, because it is implemented as the purest
truth. This is not an end, but only a beginning. The stories are written in a variety of ways, as well as
to life. Nothing happens by chance, everything has a reason to be happening. People, who
eventually become important parts of our evolution, end up being the main players of our
personality. And so we will be writing our history, our legacy. In today's world, it is hard to find
hope, with so many problems, so many lies, a lot of wrong things. The beginning that I said, is the
fact that we get the opportunity to be the change. We are no longer children, and now is the time, to
create an ideal, a way to keep on living. It is time to thank, time

Dickinson College Cliché
Some may say it's a cliché to write about the feelings you have when arriving on a college campus
for the first time; however, the feeling I got when I stepped foot on the Dickinson College campus is
one of the main reasons I decided to apply. Although I visited in June, when there were few students
on campus, I still had a feeling of being at home. Through my information session, I was able to
grasp an accurate understanding of how Dickinson tries to emanate a family feeling while at college.
This is precisely what I'm looking for in a college: a place where I feel I belong and welcomed.
I know I would fit in at Dickinson College because of the college's main focus on sustainability and
volunteer work; two things I care dearly about. I am always looking for new ways to reduce the
amount of energy I am using and how to leave less of a carbon footprint. Even though my school
requires 40 hours of community service, I don't view it as a requirement. Rather, I enjoy bettering
my community, and my volunteer work is always the highlight of my year. Over the past four years,
I have worked with multiple children; one with severe ADHD at my local temple, and I also
volunteer at my local hospital. I have learned a great deal about responsibility, compassion, and
patience. I hope to continue practicing these mannerisms throughout my time in college, I know

Why Do Actions Speak Louder Than Words
The novel Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie, supports the cliché "Actions speak
louder than words" through the examples of the attitude of the passengers towards Ratchett, and the
passengers' loyalty to the Armstrongs. The passengers attitude toward Ratchett showed that they
were not to get along with each other. The loyalty the passengers had to the is shown through the
murder of Casetti on that train. Both of these relate to the cliché "Actions speak louder than words"
by showing through actions and not words. The murder of Ratchett holds defense to the cliché
"Actions speak louder than words". The passengers were associates of the Armstrongs and wanted
revenge for the kidnapping and murder of the Armstrongs' baby. The passengers sent letters to
Ratchett threatening his life, and held their words. Later on the train, all the associates and Ratchett
were found on, but Ratchett was dead. "The question we have now to ask ourselves is this," he said.
"Is this murder the work of some rival gang whom Cassetti had double–crossed in the past, or is it
an act of private vengeance?" shows that Casetti had many enemies implying that he was a bad man.

evil blockheads. All of these cliches are able to live on through cult classics like "Mean Girls"and
"Clueless" due to the fact that Hollywood still believes that high schools in the 21st century are run

Critical Thinking
Critical Thinking – Assignment #2 In any story there are two types of language, figurative and
literal. Language is, of course a necessary factor of any story. Without Language, an author could
not tell the story. The author usually uses a combination of these two languages. Together, these
languages characterize the author's style. Literal language means exactly what is says, literal. It
employs the primary meaning of a term or expression. It is actual, obvious, and free from
exaggeration. An example of this would be: The girl baked the cake. Figurative language is
imaginative, not literal. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"One of the new things people began to find out in the last century was that thoughts –just mere
thoughts – are as powerful as electric batteries – as good for one as sunlight is, or as bad for one as
poison." from The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Apart from the fact that this
quotation itself contains a number of similes, the importance lies in the feeling that is conveyed.
Think of the difference between these two sentences:
1. Thoughts are very important.
2. "Thoughts, just mere thoughts, are as powerful as electric batteries, as good for one as sunlight is,
or as bad for one as poison."
Here are a few more examples of similes: * "My love is like a red, red rose." (Robert Burns) * Life
is sometimes like a circus. * As quiet as a mouse; as busy as a bee. * Life is like an onion. You peel
it off one layer at a time and sometimes you weep. (Carl Sandburg) * My face looks like a wedding
cake after left out in the rain. W. H. Auden
Another type of figurative language is when a writer using a metaphor. A metaphor is a comparison
between two dissimilar objects, usually implied. The comparison is not introduces by like or as,
though is is common in metaphors. Metaphor comes from two Greek words: Meta means "with,"
"after," or "beyond," and phorein means "to carry." So a metaphor carries another meaning with the
original or carries the original meanings beyond into a new meaning. This blending of old meanings

Young Adult Trope
It's undeniable that Young Adult (YA) fiction is one of the biggest, and best selling genres in
literature right now. Over 10,000 YA books came out in 2012 alone. The genre's popularity most
likely comes from a very wide variety of audience members. Many people would define YA as
books for people from 15 to 18 years old, but the fact is, far more than just those in this age range
read these books. Readers of all ages have fallen in love with YA fiction and it has a huge following
of teens and adults that has led to its exponential growth. This genre has evolved over time,
developed a variety of tropes, and has a few books/series that have shaped the modern
understanding of the genre.

But what exactly is a trope? Well, a trope is basically just a familiar (or overused) element whether
is be in character, setting, or story. Sometimes a trope is better known as a cliche. There really are
many, many cliches out there, and Young Adult fiction is no exception. Some examples of tropes are
the love triangle, the chosen one, instant–love. These and many others are often staples in YA
fiction. One important factor to remember about YA books is that that, generally speaking, the
majority of your reading demographic will be female, and this leads to more female protagonists.
Modern writers want to avoid making their characters damsels in distress because of flack given to
these kinds of characters in the past. An effort to avoid this can lead the female character can fall
into archetypes that feel cliche. The "Strong Independent Woman" is one that appears a lot. The
name is pretty self explanatory. The issue is that these three words are often the character's only
traits. Strong characters are great, but when it feels generic, and your character is boring, that's a
problem. One character cliche that gets a flack is the "Mary Sue". This is the girl who is

Movie Analysis : ' Goes Beyond Hollywood Cliches '
We people of present society consider not where news come from, how it ended up on our door step
or, more commonly today, our newsfeed. Without question we glance of the 5Ws, who, what where ,
when, why, and attribute a theme or overall message to the story–ex. drugs are bad. Very rarely do
we consumers think of the practice of producing news for the masses. We are unaware of how
interviews were conducted. Unaware of the tones, the implied and the innuendos behind questions
asked. Essentially, we the consumer are left with a compiled report from a very inquisitive human
being–in most cases a conglomerate of people–and expected to trust it without knowing the
background information of the reporters actions.
That said, All The Presidents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

for a lighter for a cigarette that he scopes standing at the door. He asks with the intent to walk in

Cliches Overdone Research Paper
CLICHé
Clichés are sometimes overdone. They are phrases that had an important meaning at one time. They
generally are not effective and should be avoided. Example of clichés would be "The grass is always
greener on the other side." (thoughtcatalog.com) This can be a barrier when it underserves the
importance of a message being conveyed.
JARGON
Jargon is generally found in a work atmosphere. It can ruin the message to the receiver, if the
receiver is not familiar with the speaker's work practice. An example of this would be police officers
and fire fighters who use "10–Codes." The ten codes do not match between police and fire. 10–8
means "In Service." In service for a police officer generally means that they ... Show more content

This type of language is generally seen in a negative light by today's modern society. It should be
avoided at all costs. An example of this type of language would be highlighting a negative phrase
that is based on gender, orientation, religion, or ethnicity.
EUPHEMISMS
Euphemisms are created to avoid sexist and racist language or to soften an expression. When
applied in the form of avoiding sexism and racism, It can still be demeaning and should be avoided.
It has no time or place for the work environment. The person saying it, is trying to avoid the more
sinister aspect of this type of language. When trying to soften the tone of an expression, it can be
used to politely describe the passing of a loved one. An example of this would be saying that
someone passed away vs died.
DOUBLESPEAK
Doublespeak is commonly found in politicians and attorneys. It is an attempt to mislead the receiver
by saying one thing but really meaning another. It can also be used as a way to not be fully honest.
This is generally seen as hiding or misconstruing the facts of what is really happening. An example
of this would be when a politician says that they will not support and new tax increases and then
raise small fees for waste and water. They can walk away with a clean conscious and say that they
voted for a tax

Stereotypes In Deborah Williams's There Is No Unmarked Woman
Making a first impression is akin to a scientific process, albeit a biased one, in which one is put
under personal microscopes and scrutinizing eyes frantically searching for a taxonomic stereotype:
"black" and "white, "rich" and "poor", "smart" and "simple". In fact, one cannot go through a single
day without being pushed and squeezed into these one–word adjectives – as if they could totally
encompass the depth of an individual. In Deborah Tannen's There Is No Unmarked Woman, women
are "marked", or judged, through such adjectives based on both the choices that they take and don't
take: from their attire, their hairstyles, their shoes, and even their relationship status. Whereas
Tannen claims that women don't have the freedom to be unmarked like men, Brent Staples' conflict
with his identity as a black man, described in his essay Just Walk on By, reveal a critical point of
disagreement in which black men, like women, are also predominantly viewed as members of a
stereotype; in which one realizes that – regardless of race, gender, nationality, or any other category
– there is not one individual that is a stranger to being marked.
Whether one is aware of it or not, stereotypes can easily creep its way into one's daily choices.
Despite being a women herself, Tanner's first focus of attention was fixed on the "three other women
at the table" with distinct styles of fashion: the classy and professional "man–tailored suits in

Essay on Virginia Woolf’s Between the Acts
Virginia Woolf's Between the acts
Virginia Woolf uses many images in the Between the Acts. Like the other novels I read in the class,
the images in the Between the Acts cannot be separated with the story development, and the images
themselves construct the story in the book by dismantling the conventional expectation for the
novel. However, Woolf uses common and conventional words and images with an experimental way
in this novel. This novel constructs the images and the representation with their conventional words
and actions of the characters. I think Woof explores how the communal use of the words like songs
and cliché makes another meaning or another reversion in their daily life here. The characters in the
novel are in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

to grasp something which is not here and also not there in the war. I think it is the hope for

"If you study balls to the wall from now on, you just might pass this class"– said my roommate
when he saw me studying for the Financial Statement Analysis course, "Professor is a real ball
breaker." When I heard that phrase, I assumed he was referring to testicles, but in fact he wasn't.
Balls to the wall means to push to the limit, go all out, full speed. This is a very colorful phrase; one
needs to be careful when using it. Although its real origin is very benign, most people assume it is a
reference to testicles, just like I did. In fact the expression came from fighter planes. The
"balls" are knobs atop the plane's throttle control. Pushing the throttle all the way

So, an engineer driving his steam locomotive at full throttle was going "balls to the
wall". The expression came to be used commonly to describe something going full speed. This
phrase took a new meaning when I looked up its origin, and quite frankly, it turns that its not all that
hip as guys make it sound.
Two weeks ago my girlfriend and I decided to drive out for an early spring picnic. On that Sunday
morning, it began to rain hard. Sadly my girlfriend declared:" We are not going anywhere because it
is raining cats and dogs out there and it's your fault (the nerve!), you should have planned the trip on
a different day." After escaping with minimal damage, I wondered how can animals be associated
with rain, and this is what I found. The meaning of this phrase is well–known, very hard rain, but its
origins are not. In the time when bubonic plague was rampant in London, humans where apparently
not the only victims of the plague. Cats and dogs were also afflicted, many died in the streets. After
a particularly hard rain, street gutters could be awash in the bodies of cats and dogs. Another theory
suggests that thunder and lightning represent a cat and dog fight.
Yet another traces the origin of the phrase to ideas in ancient mythology that cats could influence the
weather, and that dogs were a symbol of the wind. This phrase goes back many hundreds of years to
the Dark Ages. The cat was thought by sailors to have a lot to do with storms.

Stereotypes Define Normal
How We Are Defined and What Is Normal?
We live in a world where we are constantly judged by ourselves, our success, and the media but
facing these judgements in a different way than other people does not make us any less different of a
person.
Whether you are black, white, Christian, or Jewish we all live on the same planet. A planet with
different opinions and perspectives.
We and our practises change over time, which changes our normal day to a slightly more advanced
norm. But how can we define normal if at always changes?
Good morning teachers, and fellow students, today I will be discussing how we base normal off
stereotypes, how society affects how we perceive normal, and how we define ourselves as normal.

as the movie becomes more action–filled, the ending was shocking, in fact speechless. Thanos faced

When one thinks of 2017 America, one word that comes to mind is labels. There are constant
conflicts between different races, different gender groups, different economic classes, and different

one thing in common – the attempt to put people into boxes. Today people are always trying to label

One that I frequently use along with my friends is "it's easier said than done". I see the value in this
phrase in that it is useful to develop this idea, but I also agree with O'Conner when she says that it's
always easier to say something than to do it–why do we need to point it out? I believe that this
phrase's purpose is to dismiss something easily rather than go deeper into conversation about the
issue. Another phrase I hear often is "God knows" or "heaven knows". This phrase attempts to prove
the validity of something, but its overuse renders it useless in proving much. "Nip it in the bud"
implores you to fix something before it becomes a bigger issue, but the tired phrase seems to make a
joke out of a more serious issue. I can see that this phrase allows you to express a familiar idea, but
there are better ways to urge someone to resolve a problem. (Most of the time I hear it as "nip it in
the butt", which makes its use much worse). I rely on regularly on the phrase "play it by ear"
because I try to express the idea that I don't want to follow strict schedules or guidelines with what
I'm talking about. But I realize there is a better way to express this idea that is not so worn–out.

When comparisons are original, readers are more inclined to stop and critically think about the

Idiomatic expressions are a type of informal English that have a meaning different from the meaning

Here's an example of an idiomatic expression: Hold your tongue.
This idiom does not actually mean that you should stick your fingers in your mouth and grab a hold

situations where they want to talk, but it would be better if they didn't. So, while their tongue is

Stereotypes In Social Psychology Paper
Aside from arising from mental shortcuts, it has also been proposed that stereotypes are a result of
group conflict (Sherif, 1966). Regularly, individuals behave in a way that is expected of them in
order to uphold the impressions others have of them. Thus, individuals act accordingly and embody
the stereotype which is projected upon them (Baumeister & Bushman). The degree to which we rely
on stereotypes when establishing judgements of others has been widely investigated in the field of
social psychology. Frequently, the harmful consequences of relying on stereotypes is noted with the
potential of this tendency to lead to prejudice and discrimination. Furthermore, the variation in the

Furthermore, these processes are potentially subject to bias due to "the assimilative effects of
existing knowledge on information processing" (Macrae, Stangor & Hewstone, 1996). It is essential
to comprehend these concepts before delving into the importance of stereotypes when forming
impressions of others. In the initial stage of developing schemas, they allow the individual to ignore
what is perceived to be unimportant or unnecessary details of a situation, thus reducing the
complexity of the information (Macrae, Stangor & Hewstone, 1996). Indeed, schemas guide
behaviour and allow a platform for individuals to make mental shortcuts and damaging stereotypes,
they can also simplify life and are useful in every day situations (Macrae, Stangor & Hewstone,
1996). For example, if one had an existing stereotype that guns are dangerous and hastily decided to
move to the other side of the street after noticing a man with a gun – this would be an extremely
useful and possibly life–saving use of a stereotype. However, whether stereotypes are considered to
be beneficial or unconstructive – they are undeniably important when forming impressions of other

The Impact Of Stereotypes On Society
The Impact of Stereotypes on Society I think that we should get to know someone before we
discriminate on them because they could actually be a nice person. Stereotypes are judgmental
people that can be negative to society because if they are discriminating a person, it could affect that
person and everyone around them. Everyone can be a stereotype, even if they are not trying to be.
We all use stereotypes, all the time, without knowing it. We have met the enemy of equality, and the
enemy is us. b Stereotypes can be defined as a fixed image or set of features that a lot of people
stand for or represent a particular type of person or thing , and they impact our society in many ways
(Stereotypes). For example, in an interview with Guy Raz from NPR, Jamila Lyiscott says "it's like
you're trapped. You have to constantly fight against it to disprove it, and yet, at the same time, you
don't want to appear as if you're not part of a collective and loyal to it and reflect it in positive ways
as well." (Raz, Jamila). This helps define stereotypes because they will say things about you that
aren't true and you have to fight to prove them wrong. At the same time you want to reflect in
positive ways because you don't want to appear as if you have a bad reputation. Clearly, Stereotypes
have a negative impact on society. In another interview with Guy Raz, Maz Jobrani says "A lot of

Yes, you're using the word or phrase in a different content, but is using context clues really that hard,

Stereotyping Stereotypes
Stereotyping is a huge problem in society, specifically in the workplace. We are living in a social
world that provides us with a lot of complex information and because our capacity to process such
information is limited, we have developed ways to simplify it. One way is by social categorization,
which is how stereotyping occurs. Stereotyping is the process of using a few observable
characteristic to assign people to a preconceived social category, and then assigning less observable
traits to those persons based on their membership in the group (McShane 1999, p.151). In essence,
when we generalize individuals based on sub–groups and come up with an assumption and
judgment before giving the individual a chance to show us who they are, we are stereotyping.
Stereotypes are used in various situations and can be positive or negative. Regardless of the type of
stereotypes used, it greatly impacts our social interaction and the way we perceive others. So, in
what ways can stereotypes be helpful or not helpful to individuals and the organization's
productivity and goals?
Theories on Stereotyping
Generalizing people based on their gender, race and ethnicity, nationality, age, disability, religious
belief, sexual orientation, education, social class or appearance all contribute to the stereotypes we
place on others. There are several theories explaining the development of stereotypes. According to

Stereotypes are widely–held images and characteristics imposed onto certain groups of people,
typically due to physical appearance. For centuries, stereotypes have been used consciously and
subconsciously to categorise individuals into simplified, societal groups. In response to this, many
artists have created works that expose and challenge such socio–cultural labels. Evelyne Axell and
Nan Goldin are two visual artists that use their work – in contradictory ways – to confront and

and provoke audience reaction. Within the painting, an anonymous woman licking an ice–cream is

woman's face and hands are painted using realistic shaping and toning. This juxtaposition works to
emphasise her actions and to present her as more than a product of Pop Art. The intentionally–
phallic shape of the ice–cream further works to differentiate Axell's artwork from the typically
consumerist–based pieces within the movement, and contributes to the overall meaning of the work.
The use of the bright colours up against the monochromatic tones in the woman is representative of
the time period; whilst, the lack of tonal value and shading within the ice–cream leaves the pastel
and skin–coloured cylinder up to audience interpretation. This contrast makes

Our Love Now By Martyn Lowery

  • 1. Our Love Now By Martyn Lowery An interesting idea in the poem 'Our love now' is that love can be broken and damaged. 'Our Love Now' is a written by a poet called, Martyn Lowery, this poem is about a breaking relationship that had two points of view. The male persona thinks that the relationship can be mended and that they could start afresh but the female persona does not think the same. The Male uses metaphors like " The Raging storm soon will be gone " to describe how the relationship can be repaired, whereas the female uses metaphors like "it leaves damages in its wake "to describe how the relationship is unrepairable and damaged. These interesting quotes are used to describe how love can be damaged and destroyed. The idea that love can be broken is also highlighted by the use of repetition. The use engaging metaphors to describe a relationship is similarly used in the poem Sonnet 116 to portray that time can not alter love, this is expressed by the metaphors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This helps the reader to understand that this interesting idea in this poem is cleverly highlighted by the use of a strong metaphor which is an onion. The onion describes the effects of love and how it is cliche. The words "its scent will cling to your fingers " is comparing love with an onion and how it can also sting. Another quote describing the cliche expectations of love is when the author uses the words "Not a red rose or satin heart", this is an example of jargon and is tells us that the persona wants a more meaningful gift which is not the cliche gift of a rose or chocolates. The effective use of an onion to describe the personas love helps the reader to understand this interesting idea of how love is cliche. This point is also made in the poem Sonnet 116 as it also talks about how relationships can be cliche and that people have different standards and ideas of love. The idea of love in this poem is that love is overused and no longer has a real ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Essay on "North Eastern Chinese" Stereotypes A few decades ago, social scientists believed that only "rigid, repressed and authoritarian" people held stereotypes (Paul 18). However, according to several recent studies, stereotypes are unconsciously used by everyone in the world. Annie Murphy Paul proposes that stereotypes form because people categorize others into certain groups in terms of gender, age and race, and then evaluate them with in–group/out–group dynamics, which means that people look down upon those who are not in their group in order to elevate themselves. Aside from the obvious differences between humans, such as gender, Forster, Gerger and Leder (2013) propose that trivial factors like facial expressions also influence stereotyping and contribute to people's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The results showed that although the participants did not consider themselves racists, they carried stereotypes of black people. Similar experiments were conducted to test whether people held other stereotypes of homosexuals, elder people, and women. The results showed that people responded faster when negative words were paired with these minority groups as well. It seems hard to believe that everyone carries stereotypes, but from my personal experiences, I do believe so. When introducing myself, I'd like to tell others about my hometown, Dalian. It is located in the North Eastern part of China. However, every time my Chinese friends, who do not come from the same region as me, find out that I am from North Eastern China, they say "You do not act like people from North Eastern China!". I ask them why, and their answers are roughly the same: people from North Eastern China are hard to get along with because they are quick–tempered and violent, but I am nice and sweet. Some of my friends even believed that North Eastern China is very dangerous because there have been many gangsters. However, when I asked them why they believed so, they could barely give me an answer because they did not know how they came to believe in the stereotype either. This fits perfectly with the definition of implicit stereotyping that Banaji proposed. She defines implicit stereotyping as the process in which people know ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Persuasive Essay On The Lie The Lie All throughout history, human society has told lies. The lies may be intention or non– intention but everyone has told a lie at least once in their lifetime. We learn from an early age of toddler, that lying is bad. We grow older, and learn telling lies only leads to big issues. Teenagers may tell a lie to hide the truth from their parents, a parent may tell a lie to hide the truth from the child. Either way may it be with good intentions or not, lying is bad. The debate remains, why do we still lie even after knowing it is wrong? Stephanie Ericcson wrote, "All the 'isms'– racism, sexism, ageism, et al.– are founded on and fueled by the stereotype and the cliché, which are lies of exaggeration, omission, and ignorance. They are always dangerous. They take a single tree and make it a landscape." (Ericsson, 3). What did Stephanie mean by this statement? Are stereotypes and the cliché the root cause of the issues in society? Can society change these stereotypes thought process and clichés to advance to the next level? There are many different types of stereotypes and/or clichés, throughout society. The most obvious stereotypes relate to race and sex. These stereotypes have been going on for so long that the chain to unbreak them is hard. A prime example is the female or male. Females are said to be weaker physically and mentally but stronger emotionally. While males are said to be stronger physically and mentally but weaker emotionally. Many can analyze why this could be. May perhaps deals with our brain and what side of the brain we are using, while others may say environment effects it. Why others say may perhaps it's our chemical makeup to begin with. Individuals are just that individual's, no two people are the same including the anomy of twins. Even twins are two different individuals even having various of similarities. The impact of stereotyping and/or clichés are heavy. A female child, grows up thinking that girls are not supposed to be able to do this or that. They are supposed to be princesses and just look pretty. They could also hear repeating that girls are supposed to just make babies and their place is the kitchen. The girls/ women that are subject to these types of lies are impacted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Analysis Of The Unauthorized Autobiography Of Me By... Sherman Alexie, the author of "The Unauthorized Autobiography of Me" should be considered an authentic Native American and be put into a high school because he doesn't use cliches or false representations, like the author N. Scott Momaday does, while writing about modern day events of being a Native American. It is very important to not use cliches in literature, and show Native Americans in a modern day perspective, because people who don't know much about Native Americans may get the wrong idea. An article and study was done by Soli Salgado where she went to schools around America and asked students about Native Americans. 87% of the students portrayed them as only living around the 1900s or earlier. Having authentic modern day books about Native Americans will help show that Native Americans are still in America today and doing well. Another author, Debbie Reese, who criticizes authors for not being authentic in their stories will agree. Debbie Reese explains in her article "Proceed with Caution: Using Native American Folktales in the Classroom" that, "Through story, people pass their religious beliefs, customs, history, lifestyle, language, values..." (Reese 245). Sherman Alexie uses his beliefs, customs, lifestyle, and family history in his stories without using cliches. Using cliches in a Native American story shows that the writing is inauthentic because they are using generalization and not true facts. • 11. Clichers Analysis Simultaneously, it's agreed that we've all read one to many fourth grade story endings where it was just a dream and little Jimmy didn't actually get eaten by a tiger. Or everyone lived happily ever after. We live in a world where one of the most hated expressions is clichés – because they seem to lack the expression that the speaker intends to show. A cliché is deemed to be lacking of originality, which, on its own, can seem to explain why they always get a red pen mark in the margin that says "Really????????????" with that many question marks. And because no one wants to hear the overused "YOLO" ever again, we've seemed to classify it as yet another cliché. Clichés are not original and therefore, "replace the work of singular expression with the crutch ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She feels that clichés are too simple and overused, in such a way that it doesn't allow the writer's voice to come through as sophisticated as it should. As spectators, it's thought to be nearly impossible for an intelligent writer or speaker to sound so if they don't use fancy words like interminable void instead of just simply stating a never–ending emptiness, as David Foster Wallace would have. Readers and listeners are more interested in hearing exquisite words, which – guaranteed – they don't even understand what [those words] mean, than actually just hear what a person wants to say. Does it make a writer any less if he were to quote the cover of a greeting card rather than Shakespeare? Living in a society that is so accustomed to conformity, it's not frequent that a person wants to be so unique in his experiences. Jamison expresses that she hates clichés because their lack of originality makes her words sound the same as everybody else's. The feelings are mutual, in that I don't want my ideas to sound the same as everyone else's. When I write, I want my voice to shine through as though the reader will know that I wrote ... • 13. The Importance Of Stereotyping In Society A stereotype is a way to determine where a person or thing falls in the realm of life. Stereotyping is a natural part of life and it actually does have a meaning in reality. It allows a person's mind to work properly and for the human brain to be able to recognize, process, store and then recall the information when needed. Stereotyping is a big problem in society. It labels a person about how they should live or act according to their sex, race, and personality. In all work forces it is a law to not discriminate against employees or other people in the facility. It can also be used in racial, political, religious, and many more ways. Stereotyping in a racial way is judging people by the color of their skin, where they come from, or the language they speak. Stereotyping can be a big issue in many professional businesses and environments. It can affect people's lives and the way of doing things. Stereotypes also are creating a false idea of how people interact with other individuals. Many of the stereotypes children receive are through media. People should be careful when stereotyping or just keep their thoughts to themselves. Stereotyping will never go away because it helps humans to process information about things and people. • 15. The Body, By Jeanette Winterson Essay Jeanette Winterson's novel, Written on the Body, is rich with clichés and the problems they pose. Although clichés are unoriginal, Winterson uses them in her novel and uses language in a more uncommon, more original way. For the narrator in the book however, has to struggle with the limiting language there is for love and language and happiness. As Brian Finney's idea contends, "the language and images she employs serve to undercut the clichéd situation, to place it within a wider moral frame that depends intertextually on references ... and employs them to rejuvenate the jaded language of love" (Finney 26). Here Winterson recognizes the trouble with clichés and tries to go past that by referencing vastly different sciences and analogies and even the Bible. All of this is an attempt to point out that clichés are unoriginal and lead to unhappiness, and in the case of this book, through love and marriage. Winterson is huge on the cliché of marriage. Marriage has become the cliché that once you and your partner say 'I do' then you'll both live happily ever after. It has become such a huge milestone that it is viewed at as an accomplishment of life. The rings and the marriage itself are a way to show off wealth and happiness, and now a day, social media has become the new means off showing off the couple's happiness. This performance is how it is reinforced in our culture that marriage with Mr. or Miss Right will lead to happiness. This is not always the case however. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The hero saves the princess once again, and seeing how brave he was, she marries him, and they live happily ever after. In countless stories like these, the damsel in distress is mainly a flat character with no intention other than to have to face a conflict, which most of the time is getting kidnapped, and to only get saved from, and possibly fall for, the hero. Throughout history, there has been at least one character that has this trait in books like The Odyssey, and The Count of Monte Crisco, but one story that spares female characters from this trait is the Scarlet Pimpernel, written by Baroness Orczy. The Scarlet Pimpernel, published in 1905, is a tale of an englishman who saves aristocrats from the violent government that was France. He saves many people: women, men, children, and even elders from the corrupt ways of the French government through clever, thought out plans, the ability to exploit any situation to help his own tactics, and multiple disguises to help carry out the plans he concocted. During the story, it introduces a character with the name of Marguerite Bakely, the wife of Percy Bakely. Marguerite, as it's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Stereotyping Stereotypes "A stereotype may be negative or positive, but even positive stereotypes present two problems: They are cliches, and they present a human being as far more simple and uniform than any human being actually is." said Nancy Kress, an American fiction writer. We treat people the way we do because of stereotypes, a stereotype is an overlooked opinion about people. It's not necessarily a bad thing. Even when we don't realize it, we are making assumptions about people as we walking down the street or passing in the hall. We wear a mask when we change our identity because it isn't who we truly are. The way we treat people can be caused by negative stereotypes and the way people feel about their identity after they have been stereotyped. One way we treat people the way we do is because of stereotypes. We are always judging, whether it is a picture someone just posted, or even a movie. We judge everything, and it's not a bad thing. In the article "Why Do We Still Allow Stereotypes To Affect The Way We Treat People?" it says that our brains are programmed to judge things to process everyday sights. It is a fact that stereotypes form this way. When we meet someone that fits a certain stereotype, our brains automatically form an opinion. Our brain wants to place them in a specific box where everybody is the same. But when a person doesn't fit into that specific box, it causes a negative stereotype. The article also says that with it being 2016/2017, we should use the research we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, life is not always like the way we dream because racism is still happing and it has a great influence on our everyday lives. Unfortunately, nowadays some of us are not still treated equally. I am wondering why we can't get along with one another and why we cannot treat one another who are unlike with us with respect and appreciate. We all know their differences play an important role in our everyday lives because they are a significant part in our communities. Nevertheless, why we can't create an environment "where all kinds of people feel comfortable showing up, secure in the knowledge that they have a place they don't have to defend every time they turn around" (Johnson, 2006, p.5). Currently, there are several crashes around the issue of our differences, and those crashes totally have a great impact on families. The first theory about racism is we tend to judge other people by the way they look. In the movie Crash, Haggis (2005) showed us the issues relate to discrimination that are happening in our lives such as Jean asked her husband to have the locks changed again because she could not trust with the locksmith, Daniel who is tattooed Latino. She treated him as a gang member even she did not know anything about his background. Honestly, having a tattoo does not mean he is a gangster. • 28. The Oppression Of Cliches In Today's Society It may seem cliche, but many cliches are what they are, because it is implemented as the purest truth. This is not an end, but only a beginning. The stories are written in a variety of ways, as well as to life. Nothing happens by chance, everything has a reason to be happening. People, who eventually become important parts of our evolution, end up being the main players of our personality. And so we will be writing our history, our legacy. In today's world, it is hard to find hope, with so many problems, so many lies, a lot of wrong things. The beginning that I said, is the fact that we get the opportunity to be the change. We are no longer children, and now is the time, to create an ideal, a way to keep on living. It is time to thank, time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dickinson College Cliché Some may say it's a cliché to write about the feelings you have when arriving on a college campus for the first time; however, the feeling I got when I stepped foot on the Dickinson College campus is one of the main reasons I decided to apply. Although I visited in June, when there were few students on campus, I still had a feeling of being at home. Through my information session, I was able to grasp an accurate understanding of how Dickinson tries to emanate a family feeling while at college. This is precisely what I'm looking for in a college: a place where I feel I belong and welcomed. I know I would fit in at Dickinson College because of the college's main focus on sustainability and volunteer work; two things I care dearly about. I am always looking for new ways to reduce the amount of energy I am using and how to leave less of a carbon footprint. Even though my school requires 40 hours of community service, I don't view it as a requirement. Rather, I enjoy bettering my community, and my volunteer work is always the highlight of my year. Over the past four years, I have worked with multiple children; one with severe ADHD at my local temple, and I also volunteer at my local hospital. I have learned a great deal about responsibility, compassion, and patience. I hope to continue practicing these mannerisms throughout my time in college, I know participating in "The Random Acts of Kindness Club" will fulfill my desire. ... Why Do Actions Speak Louder Than Words The novel Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie, supports the cliché "Actions speak louder than words" through the examples of the attitude of the passengers towards Ratchett, and the passengers' loyalty to the Armstrongs. The passengers attitude toward Ratchett showed that they were not to get along with each other. The loyalty the passengers had to the is shown through the murder of Casetti on that train. Both of these relate to the cliché "Actions speak louder than words" by showing through actions and not words. The murder of Ratchett holds defense to the cliché "Actions speak louder than words". Language is, of course a necessary factor of any story. Without Language, an author could not tell the story. The author usually uses a combination of these two languages. Together, these languages characterize the author's style. Literal language means exactly what is says, literal. It employs the primary meaning of a term or expression. Apart from the fact that this quotation itself contains a number of similes, the importance lies in the feeling that is conveyed. Think of the difference between these two sentences: 1. Thoughts are very important. 2. "Thoughts, just mere thoughts, are as powerful as electric batteries, as good for one as sunlight is, or as bad for one as poison." Well, a trope is basically just a familiar (or overused) element whether is be in character, setting, or story. Sometimes a trope is better known as a cliche. There really are many, many cliches out there, and Young Adult fiction is no exception. Some examples of tropes are the love triangle, the chosen one, instant–love. These and many others are often staples in YA fiction. One important factor to remember about YA books is that that, generally speaking, the majority of your reading demographic will be female, and this leads to more female protagonists. Modern writers want to avoid making their characters damsels in distress because of flack given to these kinds of characters in the past. An effort to avoid this can lead the female character can fall into archetypes that feel cliche. The "Strong Independent Woman" is one that appears a lot. The name is pretty self explanatory. Stereotypes In Deborah Williams's There Is No Unmarked Woman Making a first impression is akin to a scientific process, albeit a biased one, in which one is put under personal microscopes and scrutinizing eyes frantically searching for a taxonomic stereotype: "black" and "white, "rich" and "poor", "smart" and "simple". In fact, one cannot go through a single day without being pushed and squeezed into these one–word adjectives – as if they could totally encompass the depth of an individual. In Deborah Tannen's There Is No Unmarked Woman, women are "marked", or judged, through such adjectives based on both the choices that they take and don't take: from their attire, their hairstyles, their shoes, and even their relationship status. Whereas Tannen claims that women don't have the freedom to be unmarked like men, Brent Staples' conflict with his identity as a black man, described in his essay Just Walk on By, reveal a critical point of disagreement in which black men, like women, are also predominantly viewed as members of a stereotype; in which one realizes that – regardless of race, gender, nationality, or any other category – there is not one individual that is a stranger to being marked. Whether one is aware of it or not, stereotypes can easily creep its way into one's daily choices. In the time when bubonic plague was rampant in London, humans where apparently not the only victims of the plague. Cats and dogs were also afflicted, many died in the streets. After a particularly hard rain, street gutters could be awash in the bodies of cats and dogs. Another theory suggests that thunder and lightning represent a cat and dog fight. Yet another traces the origin of the phrase to ideas in ancient mythology that cats could influence the weather, and that dogs were a symbol of the wind. When people read and encounter a cliche, they tend to gloss over the cliche without considering the deeper meaning. Cliches are phrases that have become so common that most readers carefully reanalyze the writing after reading them. When comparisons are original, readers are more inclined to stop and critically think about the sentence and what the message or meaning of the literary device. Orwell's comparison is original, detailed and help successfully support his argument. The originality Orwell puts into his comparisons make reader stop to think and question why and how the use of those words accurately create the image that he intends. Original comparisons should effectively convey pictures and sensations to the reader. Unlike cliches, comparisons like Orwell's will make a lasting impression on the reader because the comparison will stand out. When writing, one must not simply accept the ready–made cliches that come to mind but "decide what impressions one's words are likely to make on another person" (7) and choose the words based on the ... • 62. Strategic Intervention Material Idiomatic expressions are a type of informal English that have a meaning different from the meaning of the words in the expression. Here's an example of an idiomatic expression: Hold your tongue. This idiom does not actually mean that you should stick your fingers in your mouth and grab a hold of your tongue. It means that you should not talk. People "hold their tongues" when they are in situations where they want to talk, but it would be better if they didn't. So, while their tongue is ready to do some talking, they "hold" it and don't say anything. Every language has idioms, and they can be difficult to learn if you are not a native speaker of that language. The best thing to do ... Cometimes it cause racism and lake of contact between different people but sometimes we use stereotypes to understand the world and the place we live in or more exactly to classify people we live with. We need clichés to dismantle them. I am gonna do this exercise with one of the most popular clichés on our society:"black color skin people are lazy and they are all the time waiting for white people's help". In the first place I will explain why I chose this cliché and in the second time how to fight it. • 67. Marriage Counseling As Cliche And Often Ineffective In the past, I regularly concluded marriage counseling as cliché and often ineffective. I consistently heard people say how marriage counseling was foolish and if your marriage is failing, a professional was incapable of fixing it. I likewise repeatedly assumed a considerable amount of marriage counselors just longed for love themselves, or they would practice interventions which were super far–fetched from what the couples actually needed. I assumed those ideas when I first signed up for this class. Trust me, I had all the stereotypes down. Now, you are probably wondering why I even signed up for this class. I'm incredibly indecisive on what counseling path I wish to pursue, therefore I decided to give this class a shot. I want to pick ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The one sentence which stuck out immensely in the book was, "I can predict whether a couple will divorce after watching and listening to them for just fifteen minutes." I just couldn't accept it was possible. How could one know the fate of a relationship in just fifteen minutes? This one sentence made me contemplate becoming a marriage counselor. This book could diminish the stereotypes and show others what an incredible career path marriage counseling could be. I would love to help people figure out who they are as a couple. I believe once individuals pursue a relationship, especially marriage, you aren't necessarily an individual anymore. I realize you are still your own person, but how you conduct yourself is heavily based on your partner. This entire book actually helped me and my own boyfriend, Ryan. I decided it would be interesting for us to complete a few of the little questionnaires and love maps in the book. It was enjoyable and it certainly helped strengthen our relationship. On one certain love map on page 58 through 60, it genuinely made me gain a new appreciation for Ryan. Ryan and I have been dating for about a year and a half. I have invariably speculated that he never listened when I would tell him little tidbits of my life. For example, whenever I tell him I'm hanging out with my friend Taylor, his response is always, "Who's Taylor?" I constantly became upset, considering we have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Stereotypes In Social Psychology Paper Aside from arising from mental shortcuts, it has also been proposed that stereotypes are a result of group conflict (Sherif, 1966). Regularly, individuals behave in a way that is expected of them in order to uphold the impressions others have of them. Thus, individuals act accordingly and embody the stereotype which is projected upon them (Baumeister & Bushman). The degree to which we rely on stereotypes when establishing judgements of others has been widely investigated in the field of social psychology. Frequently, the harmful consequences of relying on stereotypes is noted with the potential of this tendency to lead to prejudice and discrimination. Furthermore, the variation in the significance of stereotypes has been explored to determine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, these processes are potentially subject to bias due to "the assimilative effects of existing knowledge on information processing" (Macrae, Stangor & Hewstone, 1996). It is essential to comprehend these concepts before delving into the importance of stereotypes when forming impressions of others. In the initial stage of developing schemas, they allow the individual to ignore what is perceived to be unimportant or unnecessary details of a situation, thus reducing the complexity of the information (Macrae, Stangor & Hewstone, 1996). Indeed, schemas guide behaviour and allow a platform for individuals to make mental shortcuts and damaging stereotypes, they can also simplify life and are useful in every day situations (Macrae, Stangor & Hewstone, 1996). For example, if one had an existing stereotype that guns are dangerous and hastily decided to move to the other side of the street after noticing a man with a gun – this would be an extremely useful and possibly life–saving use of a stereotype. However, whether stereotypes are considered to be beneficial or unconstructive – they are undeniably important when forming impressions of other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. The Impact Of Stereotypes On Society The Impact of Stereotypes on Society I think that we should get to know someone before we discriminate on them because they could actually be a nice person. Stereotypes are judgmental people that can be negative to society because if they are discriminating a person, it could affect that person and everyone around them. Everyone can be a stereotype, even if they are not trying to be. We all use stereotypes, all the time, without knowing it. We have met the enemy of equality, and the enemy is us. b Stereotypes can be defined as a fixed image or set of features that a lot of people stand for or represent a particular type of person or thing , and they impact our society in many ways (Stereotypes). For example, in an interview with Guy Raz from NPR, Jamila Lyiscott says "it's like you're trapped. You have to constantly fight against it to disprove it, and yet, at the same time, you don't want to appear as if you're not part of a collective and loyal to it and reflect it in positive ways as well." (Raz, Jamila). This helps define stereotypes because they will say things about you that aren't true and you have to fight to prove them wrong. At the same time you want to reflect in positive ways because you don't want to appear as if you have a bad reputation. Clearly, Stereotypes have a negative impact on society. In another interview with Guy Raz, Maz Jobrani says "A lot of times in Hollywood when casting directors find out you're of Middle Eastern descent, they go, oh, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Using The Word Stereotypes When it comes to clichés, tropes and stereotypes I think it comes natural for people to see only the negatives that are associated with the meaning of these words. With the word cliché, why does the lack of original thought in a phrase have to be a bad thing? These phrases could easily be embraced and have it said and looked at with positivity. When it comes to tropes, I see no real problem with it. Yes, you're using the word or phrase in a different content, but is using context clues really that hard, so that you can understand what a person was actually trying to say. With our society today when the word stereotype is said, our minds tunnel vision to the bad associated with that person or thing and ignore the good stereotypes that in most ... Cliche Switcheroo Monologue It had been the 5th night that the devil had spoken to him, the bright white snow outside his window, the shadow of a tree that's casted inside Shong's room haunts him with illusion of the day we met. I was like his best friend, I walked where his shadow laid, but we never talked, yet I was always there with him when he ran away. Away? From what you might ask, well. • 77. Stereotyping Stereotypes Stereotyping is a huge problem in society, specifically in the workplace. We are living in a social world that provides us with a lot of complex information and because our capacity to process such information is limited, we have developed ways to simplify it. One way is by social categorization, which is how stereotyping occurs. Stereotyping is the process of using a few observable characteristic to assign people to a preconceived social category, and then assigning less observable traits to those persons based on their membership in the group (McShane 1999, p.151). In essence, when we generalize individuals based on sub–groups and come up with an assumption and judgment before giving the individual a chance to show us who they are, we are stereotyping. Stereotypes are used in various situations and can be positive or negative. Regardless of the type of stereotypes used, it greatly impacts our social interaction and the way we perceive others. So, in what ways can stereotypes be helpful or not helpful to individuals and the organization's productivity and goals? Theories on Stereotyping Generalizing people based on their gender, race and ethnicity, nationality, age, disability, religious belief, sexual orientation, education, social class or appearance all contribute to the stereotypes we place on others. There are several theories explaining the development of stereotypes. According to the Social Categorization & Social Identity theory, stereotypes are developed through ... • 79. Stereotypes And Cliches : A Comparative Essay Stereotypes and Clichés: A Comparative Essay Stereotypes are widely–held images and characteristics imposed onto certain groups of people, typically due to physical appearance. For centuries, stereotypes have been used consciously and subconsciously to categorise individuals into simplified, societal groups. In response to this, many artists have created works that expose and challenge such socio–cultural labels. Evelyne Axell and Nan Goldin are two visual artists that use their work – in contradictory ways – to confront and oppose restrictive gender stereotypes. Evelyne Axell was born in Belgium on the 16th of August, 1935. In 1953, Axell studied pottery at the Namur School of Art; however – after a year's study – she transferred to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Today, Goldin's work continues to gain recognition for its honest depiction of youth culture and sexuality. "Ice Cream" is an oil painting by Evelyne Axell that explores and promotes the expression of female sexuality. Through the manipulation of shape, colour and contrast; Axell is able to convey meaning and provoke audience reaction. Within the painting, an anonymous woman licking an ice–cream is presented as the focal point. Between these subjects; the woman's hair, the ice–cream and the background are all presented as blocked, organic shapes. The shapes in the background appear to be scalloped and work to draw attention to the woman. Unlike the other shapes within the picture, the woman's face and hands are painted using realistic shaping and toning. This juxtaposition works to emphasise her actions and to present her as more than a product of Pop Art. The intentionally– phallic shape of the ice–cream further works to differentiate Axell's artwork from the typically consumerist–based pieces within the movement, and contributes to the overall meaning of the work. The use of the bright colours up against the monochromatic tones in the woman is representative of the time period; whilst, the lack of tonal value and shading within the ice–cream leaves the pastel and skin–coloured cylinder up to audience interpretation. This contrast makes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
