In 2010, a photo-sharing startup launched—on a single, closed platform. Over the next two years, it gained over 100 million active users, before being acquired by Facebook for one. billion. dollars. Only half a year after *that* did they finally release a web app. Instagram's main purpose was sharing photos and commenting on them. If this isn't a perfect fit for the open web platform, I don't know what is. And yet the app was planted neatly within Apple's walled garden, without even an API to speak of. How did things go so wrong? The web needs to catch up, and fast. If we want to preserve all the virtues of the web—shareable URLs, indexable content, open standards, instantly deployed updates, and so on—then we need to make the web platform more attractive, both to developers and users. We need to explore the final frontier of web development: *true* web apps, of the kind that will delight our users (and our investors). But we're not quite there … yet. In this talk, I want to explore the efforts underway to bring the web platform up to speed as a genuine competitor. We have the most momentum of any platform in history, but there are still many unanswered questions. What are the major functionality gaps, and how are we closing them? Can we make app development as easy for web as it is for native? How do we fix mobile performance? Can you even use a web app while you're offline? I want to tell you about that not-too-distant future where these problems have been solved. Editors are speccing up new APIs; implementers are leveling up their browsers; and the community is building new frameworks. Together, we're slowly but surely pushing into that final frontier. And once we're past it, the mobile web will be a natural choice for the next big content-sharing app, enabling us to share by simply sending a URL—from any browser, to any device, on any platform.

The platform team at eBay recently embarked on a mission to provide a new Node.js-based web development stack that developers would love using. Despite being an entirely new ecosystem to most developers, we wanted to introduce a stack that had a minimal learning curve, performed extremely well and made front-end web development fun again. We recognized that as web applications grow in complexity it becomes increasingly important to provide a web development stack that shields developers from potential problems and allows for maximum developer productivity. The team decided to rethink some of the industry norms to see how we could simplify the toolchain and make it easier for developers to build an application that interacts with a myriad of complex infrastructure pieces. In addition, we also never lost focus on the requirement that the stack must scale extremely well. In this talk we will share our tips and solutions, including but not limited to: Avoid build tools and build steps Be flexible, don't use a restrictive framework Avoid introducing “magic” and still hide complexity Expect services to fail and have a backup plan Minimize developer idle time and provide instant feedback Automate using scaffolding and command line tools Organize project files to enforce modularity and best practices Keep documentation up-to-date and easy to digest Automatically optimize the delivery of JavaScript and CSS resources This talk is a must for all web developers who are interested in improving their productivity and building high performance web applications that are easy to maintain. That means that application can easily deployed on multiple sites on different physical location as if it was one big data centre. It’s no news that containers represent a portable unit of deployment, and OpenStack has proven an ideal environment for running container workloads. However, where it usually becomes more complex is that many times an application is often built out of multiple containers. What’s more, setting up a cluster of container images can be fairly cumbersome because you need to make one container aware of another and expose intimate details that are required for them to communicate which is not trivial especially if they’re not on the same host. These scenarios have instigated the demand for some kind of orchestrator. The list of container orchestrators is growing fairly fast. TOSCA (Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications) is an emerging standard for modeling complete application stacks and automating their deployment and management. It’s been discussed in the context of OpenStack for quite some time, mostly around Heat. In this slide deck discusses what TOSCA is all about, why it makes sense in the context of OpenStack, and how we can take it farther up the stack to handle complete applications, both during and after deployment, on top of OpenStack.

Managing and deploying applications on CloudStack (or any other cloud for that matter) can be a daunting task. Resource provisioning, software installation and configuration, failure detection and handling, scaling and continuous delivery are just some of the processes that should be performed (read: automated) in order to do it properly. There are multiple tool chains that tackle some of these processes, each with its own focus and level of control. These can range from pure CM tools such as Chef or Puppet, which focus on repeatable and consistent configuration of servers, all the way to full blown PaaS environments that focus on developer productivity and hide many of the complexities of the underlying infrastructure. In this session Uri will present the problem domain of application deployment and management on the cloud, the benefits and shortcomings of common approaches to it, and what (he believes) is still missing.

Try Building a Shower in Your Workplace This is my ignite talk from devopsdays Tel Aviv, it is about hacking organizational culture, and how a seemingly impossible venture (building a fully functional shower in a place where there is no room or budget for it) can be made possible with a few simple (but determined) steps. It all started when I wanted to encourage people (including myself) to ride their bicycle to work, but needed a place to wash off our sweat after the intensive morning rides. Salesforce Adoption – Metrics, Methods, and Motivation, Antone Kom

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
