The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is an intergovernmental organization that addresses security issues such as arms control, human rights, freedom of the press, fair elections, conflict prevention and crisis management. It is composed of 57 participating states, 11 partner countries, and has a budget of 145 million euros. Originally beginning as the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe during the Cold War to mediate talks between East and West Europe, finalizing the Helsinki Accords, the OSCE now stops the spread of illegal weapons, protects borders, prevents human trafficking and supports economic growth and gender equality.
