Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet and playwright born in 1854 who attended Oxford University. He published several works of poetry and fiction in the 1880s and 1890s, including The Picture of Dorian Gray. Wilde had a four-year relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas from 1891. In 1895, he was imprisoned for two years for gross indecency after his homosexual relationship was revealed. He died in 1900 at the age of 46 with his last words criticizing the wallpaper in his room.
