2. Introduction to Organic Framing:-
Organic farming system is a method of farming system which primarily
aimed at sustainable agricultural production in an eco-friendly pollution
free environment and being followed from ancient time in India.
Organic Production system, keep the environment and ecology alive
and in good health by use of natural resources to harness desired
agricultural production for human consumption.
In Organic production, environment focus is on using naturally
available resources as inputs, such as organic wastes (crop, animal and
farm wastes, aquatic wastes) and other biological materials along with
beneficial microbes (biofertilizers/ bio control agents) to release
nutrients to crops and protect them from insect pest and diseases for
increased agricultural production.
3. Definitions:
DEFINITION AS PER USDA:
organic farming is a system which avoids or largely excludes the use of synthetic
inputs (such as fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, feed additives etc) and to the
maximum extent feasible rely upon crop rotations, crop residues, animal manures,
off-farm organic waste, mineral grade rock additives and biological system of
nutrient mobilization and plant protection.
The scientific definition can be given as –
Organic farming is a form of agriculture that relies on ecosystem management and
attempts to reduce or eliminate external agricultural inputs, especially synthetic
ones.
5. Global Organic area continues to grow…….
According to the latest FiBL survey on organic agriculture
worldwide, organic farmland increased by 1.1 million hectares,
and organic retail sales continued to grow, as shown by the data
from 187 countries (data as of the end of 2019).
In 2019, 72.3 million hectares were under organic agricultural
management worldwide. The region with the most organic
agricultural land is Oceania, with 35.9 million hectares,
followed by Europe with 16.5 million hectares, Latin America
(8.3 million hectares), Asia (5.9 million hectares), North
America (3.6 million hectares) and Africa (2.0 million hectares).

9. Organic Farming in India: An overview
India’s rank 5th in terms of World’s Organic Agricultural land and 1st in terms of total
number of producers as per 2019 survey of organic farming by FiBL(2021) data.
About 2.30 million hectares of farmland was under organic cultivation as of March 2019.
This is two per cent of the 140.1 million ha net sown area in the country, (FiBL 2021).
The top three states Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra account for about half
the area under organic cultivation.
Madhya Pradesh tops the list with 0.76 million ha of area under organic cultivation that is
over 27% of India’s total organic cultivation area.
During 2016, Sikkim has achieved a remarkable distinction of converting its entire
cultivable land (more than 75000 ha) under organic certification and became 1st organic state
of India.
After Sikkim, Tripura and Uttarakhand have now become fully organic states in India.
Lakshadweep become first Union Territory to be declared fully organic in the year of 2021.
10. Production
Among different states Madhya Pradesh is the largest producer followed by Maharashtra,
Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
In terms of commodities Oil seeds are the single largest category followed by Sugar crops,
Cereals and Millets, Tea & Coffee, Fiber crops, fodder, Pulses, Medicinal/Herbal and
Aromatic plants and Spices & Condiments.
Export
The total volume of export during 2019-20 was 6.389 lakh MT. The organic food export
realization was around INR 4,686 crore (689 million USD). The major export destinations are
EU, USA, Canada, Switzerland, Pakistan, New Zealand and Australia.
In terms of export value realization Processed foods including soya meal, Oilseeds, Plantation
crop products such as Tea and Coffee, Cereals and millets, Spices and condiments, Dry fruits,
Sugar and Medicinal plants lead among the products.
11. Background of recent success of India towards Organic Farming:-
Development of steering group by planning commission in 2000, recommended the development
of north-east region and dryland areas of India as an organic farm land where very low or no
consumption of synthetic chemicals.
Development of NAP who recommended identification, promotion and developmental research on
ITK’s for Organic Farming.
The development of Task force on organic farming by the Department of Organic Farming and
Agriculture who recommended to promote organic farming across the country.
The national programme for Organic Farming (NPOP) launched in 2000 to provide as institutional
mechanism for the implementation of National Standards of Organic Products through a National
Accreditation Policy 2001.
Scheme released by GOI also played important role to increase an area and production in Organic
Farming. Schemes such as Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY)- A traditional farming
improvement programme, PMKY was launched in 2015. It is an extended component of Soil
Health Management (SHM) under the National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA).
The revamped PKVY promotes organic farming through the adoption of an organic village
by cluster approach and the Participatory Guarantee System of certification.
