Write Down Homework
Complete Warm UpWarm Up Determine what place value each underlined number is: 1. 3,401 2. 24,502
Joke of the Day What did the pencil say to the other pencil? “You’re looking sharp”
What is 6th grade math?!?! Ms. Evan’s Syllabus

Unit 1 Vocabulary Sheet Place after the Table of Contents Each vocabulary word has the page number where you can find definition Definition AND Example
Rounding & Estimating
Table of Contents Date: 8/10 Section: 1.2 Title: estimating and Rounding Pages: 1 – 3
What Do we Already Know Talk to the person sitting next to you about What you already remember about rounding and estimating?
A little riddle….. “5 and up round up…….. 4 and down round down…”
Steps to Rounding…it’s like a recipe! 1. Underline the number of the place value indicated. (tens, hundreds, thousands, etc.) 2. Look at the number to the right ,[object Object]
4 or lower round down3. Add, subtract, multiply, or divide 
I. Addition and SubtractionJust Watch! Estimate by rounding to the place value indicated 12,345 + 26,234 to the ten thousands 12,345 and 26,234 lower higher 10,000 30,000 10,000 + 30,000 = 40,000
You Try!!! 1. Estimate to the nearest thousands place 7,420 + 3,527 Step 1: Step 2: Step 3:
You got this! 8,254 – 6,213 (thousands) 35,698 + 23,901 (ten thousands) 2,701 - 1,527 (thousands) Raise your hand when you are done and I will check it! Then, Help Others in your group.
II. Multiply and DividingJust Watch 24 • 3 24 rounds to 20 20 • 3 = 60 This is so easy!!!!
You Try! 1. 44 ÷ 4 2. 121 • 4 3. 81 ÷ 2 Ready, Set, Go!!!!

  • 21. If the depths of all the oceans were rounded to the nearest ten thousand, which two oceans would have the same depth? 2. In 1960, scientists observed sea creatures living as far down as thirty thousand feet. In which ocean(s) could these creatures have lived? 3. The oceans cover about three-fourths of Earth’s surface. Estimate the total area of all the oceans combined by rounding to the nearest million.
