Lesson 1: Comparing and Arranging Decimal Numbers
About the Lesson
This module was designed and written to help you master comparing and arranging
decimal numbers. Different activities are given to help you process the concepts and
deepen your understanding about the lesson.
Objective/Learning Competency
In this lesson you are expected to compare and arrange decimal numbers.
Pre- Assessment
A. Find out how much you already know about this module. Read each question
carefully. Choose the letter of your answer and write it on a separate sheet of paper.
1. Which of the following is greater than 0.346?
a. 0.243 b. 0.366 c. 0.336 d. 0.342
2. Which decimal has the greatest value in 6.880, 6.088, 0.688, 8.086?
a. 8.086 b. 6.880 c. 6.088 d. 0.688
3. What is the number less than 1.8374 .
a. 2.3741 b. 3.8374 c. 1.4378 d. 1.8734
4. Which of the following is less than 45.79?
a. 43.79 b. 45.97 c. 55.79 d. 45.97
5. Arrange : 0.3467, 0.3867, 0.4576, 0.236 from least to greatest.
a. 0.3467, 0.4576, 0.3867, 0.236
b. 0.236, 0.4576, 0.3467, 0.3867
c. 0.4576, 0.3867, 0.3467, 0.236
d. 0.236, 0.3467, 0.3867, 0.4576
B. Fill in the box with the correct symbols >, < or = . Write your answer in a separate
sheet of paper.
6. 0.07 0.7
7. 6.500 6.50
8. 4.8 4.008
9. Sixty thousandths Six and six tenths
10.Four ones and thirty hundredths 4.03

Lesson Proper
I. Activity:
Daniel’s weight is 43.25 kg compared to 41.75 kg of Freddie.
Who weighs more between the two boys?
What number comes first, 43.25 or 41.75 ?
Which number is greater, 43.25 or 41.75 ?
How do we determine the answer?
II. Questions to Ponder
Did you find difficulty in doing the activity or did you enjoy working on it?
Let us take up as an example the above given problem. Following the concept
of comparing decimals, let us put the decimal points and the digits in their
corresponding place value in one column.
Compare the whole numbers from left to right after aligning the decimal points.
III. Examples and Discussions
A. Comparing Decimal Numbers
1. Which is greater 8.045 or 8.45 ?
2. Is 0.92 smaller than 0.962 ? Lets evaluate.
0.92 The number in one tenths are both the same.
0.962 Proceed to the hundredths place. 2 is smaller than 6
Therefore, the answer is YES. 0.92 is smaller than 0.962
You can use the symbol < “smaller than” for this example.

Therefore, 43.25 is greater than 41.75
or 43.25 > 41.75
Daniel weighs more than Freddie.

To determine which is greater,
compare the digits starting from left to right.
Decimal points must be aligned.
8.45 is greater than 8.045

3. Compare 12.6 and 12.600
12.6 Tens, ones and tenths digit are the same.
12.600 The next digit is zero.
Therefore, 12.6 = 12.600
B. Arranging Decimals
A set of decimals may be arranged from least to greatest (in ascending
order) or from greatest to least (in descending order).
To arrange 9.06 9.62 9.602 9.006 in ascending
order, we align the decimal points and start comparing the digits from left to right.
1. To arrange 0.08 , 0.6 , 1.45 , 0.308 and
0.081 in descending order, we align the decimal points and start comparing
the digits from left to right.
IV. Exercises
A. Compare the pair of decimal numbers below. Use the symbol > , < or =
in comparing them. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.
1. 3.85 38.50
2. 0.472 4.072

B. Arrange the decimals in descending order (greatest to least). Write your answer
on a separate sheet of paper.
1. 5.083 , 5.7 , 5.008 , 5.43
2. 11.064 , 11.604, 11.460, 11.640
Arrange the decimals in ascending order (least to greatest).
3. 0.7 , 0.071 , 0.69 , 0.82
4. 24.930 , 23.94 , 24.309, 24.390
5. 400.60 , 406.06, 400.06, 406.04
Summary
In comparing decimals, column first the decimal points and the digits in their
corresponding place value. Compare the digits from left to right. The number with a greater
digit in the same place value is the greater number.
To order decimals, compare the value of the digits in each place value from left to
right. The digit with greater value gives the greater decimal.
Decimals in ascending order (least to greatest)
Decimals in descending order (greatest to least)
