Founded in 1992 in Germany as S.u.S.E. GmbH, openSUSE was later acquired by Novell in 2003 and became a community open source project. It has since evolved from a closed source commercial distribution to a free and open source operating system with different desktop environments and a large collection of applications. The current version is openSUSE 12.3 with KDE and requires a minimum of 1 GB RAM, 3 GB storage, and a Pentium III processor.
