OpenPOWER Supercomputing Recap Day Two: Innovating Across the Stack

  • 2. Day Two at a glance, brought to you by Day Two at SC15 covered several themes: Removing the networking bottleneck with accelerated interconnects. Laying the foundations for the move to exascale computing. The growing role of GPUs and FPGAs in accelerated computing. 1 2 3

  • 4. Such acceleration on a massive scale can help solve many of today’s high-performance computing problems like real-time performance requirements, unstructured data and extremely large data sets.
  • 5. At SC15, OpenPOWER Foundation members demonstrated how accelerators can solve networking bottlenecks caused by unprecedented volumes of unstructured data.

  • 7. Yes it is, with InfiniBand from Mellanox. • Mature and proven technology. • Scales effortlessly in the cloud. • Has the support of the InfiniBand Trade Alliance.

InfiniBand Interconnect advantages • Proven and scalable for high-performance end-to-end connectivity. • Flexible, supporting POWER, GPUs, and FPGAs. • Standards-based, supported by large ecosystem. • Offloading architecture, like RDMA and application acceleration engines. • Converged I/O: compute, storage, and management on a single fabric. • Backward and future compatible.

  • 10. The U.S. Department of Energy is charting a path to exascale with accelerated interconnects and GPUs.
