Rick Skinner, Chief Information and Technology Officer at University of Virginia Health System, gave a presentation on dynamic industry drivers and trends shaping the future of health IT leaders. He discussed how the roles of CIOs are expanding beyond just managing technology to include bringing value through information, innovation, and integration. Skinner argued that health systems' core business may be teaching people to use information and that IT leaders must follow where the money is going in terms of risk-based payments and value-based programs. He questioned whether patient experience and transparency will become more important and posed other questions on the future of health IT.
