The concept of produsage (Bruns 2008) describes the user-led collaborative approach to content creation which is prevalent in open source, citizen journalism, and the Wikipedia, as well as many other social media spaces. While many produsage projects have emerged initially to challenge dominant players in industry, their successful establishment as viable and sustainable alternatives also opens the door for an exploration of manageable cooperative arrangements between industry and community. Many challenges remain for such Pro-Am (Leadbeater & Miller 2004) models, however - not least an often deep-seated sense of mutual distrust -, and successful Pro-Am models may be most likely to succeed when sponsored by trusted third parties (public broadcasters, NGOs). This presentation explores pitfalls and possibilities in the Pro-Am space.

So-called “prosumers” in today’s web 2.0 mindset will increasingly expect companies as well as research institutions to open up for a true dialogue with the public. The demand for transparency and a direct, unmediated discourse is fundamentally changing the way enterprises and organizations communicate about science and innovation. As much as social media might shake the business foundations of the publishing industry to the core and as much as it may alter journalism as we know it, there is also a high potential of bringing the society back into science and innovation. Especially when it comes to potentially controversial technological developments, the right public discourse may create transparency and thus build up trust in innovation, promote general readiness for technological change and accordingly accelerate the diffusion of new products in the market. Since media images of public debates tend to be afflicted by a high degree of complexity, new visualization methods and new journalistic skills are needed. Therefore the author suggests an interaction model for future innovation communication that addresses the demand for public discourse in all four stages of the value chain: science, ideation, innovation and diffusion.
What can we obtain if we merge the ideas of "Open Innovation", "Collaborative Innovation Network" and, why not, "crowdsourcing"? The results are virtual environments, opened to everybody, aimed to create innovation throught e-collaboration tools and methods. Cities are more and more witnessing the emergence of innovation initiatives,
indifferently originated by top-down or bottom-up intentionality, that are being
observed and analysed as Urban Living Labs, i.e. socio-digital innovation ecosystems
made up of creative communities of people producing innovation at urban
level with the support of a number of methods and tools helping to co-create value
out of the experience of interaction between the citizen/customer and
private/public actors.
These Urban living Labs are activators of experiments of governance innovation
which include people, institutions, private actors, relationships, values, processes,
tools and physical or financial infrastructures, that could trigger, generate, facilitate
and catalyse innovation in the city. These are spheres for knowledge creation
within the city and differ for dimensions, scale of action, nature (top-down or
bottom-up), organizational structure, and also for the way in which the participants
acts and are represented. They are also heterogeneous for the space of action in
which they emerge and can be interrelated and connected by topics, contexts,
interests, practices, and level of maturity in many different ways.
In Urban Living Labs new governance modes and models are experimented,
where participants acts in several and not pre-defined ways, creating complex
organizations able to integrate hierarchical and horizontal structures and creating
specific spheres of action stimulating collective testing and learning. In these
environments, governance is experimented between formal and informal publicprivate-
people partnerships able to shape innovative dialogues between citizens
and city institutions.
In this perspective the workshop aims at investigating some questions:
1.What kind of organizations is shaped in Urban Living Labs?
2.How is governance modelled in Urban living labs?
3.How is governance experimented?
4.What level of institutionalization is opportune for the emerging governance?
