This was my second session presented at the Red Hat Forum in Tokyo, November 2012. There's a lot of animation in this presentation. The animation doesn't show well, but the basic ideas kinda show through. This presentation takes participants from a basic 1 or 2 node install to a Highly Available, Load Balanced, horizontally scaled deployment.

This talk was presented at All Things Open: https://allthingsopen.org/talk/scaling-your-logging-infrastructure/ Event logging is important not only for IT security and operations, but also for business decisions. The syslog-ng application is an enhanced logging daemon, with a focus on central log collection. It collects logs from many different sources, processes and filters them and finally it stores them or routes them for further analysis. From this session you will learn (using examples from syslog-ng) why and how to parse important information from incoming messages, and how to route logs, feeding downstream systems using arbitrary formats. We will also discuss how the client – relay – server architecture can solve scalability problems. Also, I will present some of the recently introduced “Big Data” destinations of syslog-ng, which can help to scale your infrastructure even further.

It describes installing and configuring each component on appropriate servers to ship MySQL slow logs from database servers to Logstash for processing, indexing to Elasticsearch for search and analysis, and visualization of slow query trends and details in Kibana dashboards and graphs.

Learn more about scalable logging and analytics using LogStash. This will be an overview of logstash components, including getting started, indexing, storing and getting information from logs. Logstash is a tool for managing events and logs. You can use it to collect logs, parse them, and store them for later use (like, for searching).

Openstack Scheduler and Scalability Issue

The nova scheduler determines where to run virtual machine instances in OpenStack. It uses filters and weights to identify the best compute host from available information. An instance request is fulfilled by the scheduler selecting a host, informing the conductor, and having the compute node launch the instance. For large clouds, a horizontally scalable scheduler that uses flavor-based queues and avoids the database may improve performance. A Scheduler-as-a-Service project is also planned to provide a generic scheduler for other OpenStack components.

Nginx is a web server and proxy server that is modular, allowing users to specify which modules they want. It has a main configuration file located at /etc/nginx/nginx.conf that includes other configuration files. Nginx uses server blocks and location directives to map URI requests to resources. It can serve static content from a specified root directory or act as a proxy server by forwarding requests to another server. Rewrite rules using the return or rewrite directives allow changing URLs in client requests to redirect users.

It allows processing data at the edge to save money by only sending essential data from devices. Edgent provides connectors for various data sources and sinks and can be used for IoT, embedded in application servers, and for monitoring machines. The edge refers to devices, gateways, and sensors at the network boundary that provide potential data. Edgent applications follow a common structure of getting a provider, creating a topology, composing processing graphs, and submitting it for execution.

To keep up with the fast growth, the SRE team had to implement an efficient Continuous Delivery infrastructure that allowed to do over 10,000 puppet deployment and 8,500 application deployment in 2014. In this presentation, we will cover the nuts and bolts of the TubeMogul operations engineering team and how they overcome challenges.

How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?

Its core banking applications run on the mainframe and Citizens was using legacy utilities to get the critical mainframe data to feed customer-facing channels, like call centers, web, and mobile. Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server

This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
