3. 3
I would like to begin by acknowledging that the land on which
we gather is the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the
Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River.
Today, this meeting place is still home to many Indigenous
people and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and
learn on this land.

Mark is Executive Director of Mozilla, the global nonprofit that does everything from making Firefox to standing up for issues like online privacy. They basically invented Open Badges as an alternative way to recognize learning and achievement in 2011.
But my connection with Mark goes back over 25 years, to when I was stuck in a technical job as a video editor at TVOntario and Mark was a community producer for Maclean Hunter Cable TV. He helped me produce community stories back then just as he's empowering people today to build safe, vibrant communities online.
Open Badges is a great example of something that Mozilla was able to spin up and send out into the world, with a strong community and an exciting road map. This is a wonderful success story and I'm happy today to bring it back to its Toronto roots, as we all work to build a vision for a regional recognition network in Ontario.
Please welcome Mark Surman.
