The narrator recalls being embarrassed and ashamed of their mother as a child because she only had one eye. They ignored and were rude to their mother when she visited their school. As an adult, the narrator moved away and had their own family. When their mother visited unannounced, the narrator yelled at her to leave. After their mother's death, the narrator discovers through a letter that as a child they had lost an eye in an accident, and their mother had given them her eye so they could see. The letter expresses the mother's love and pride in her child being able to see in her place.
