The narrator describes how as a child they were embarrassed by and resented their mother who had only one eye. The narrator confronted their mother and told her to die for embarrassing them. Years later after becoming successful, the mother visited but the narrator was still cruel to her. After the mother's death, the narrator learned that as a child they had lost an eye in an accident and their mother had given them her eye so they could see. The letter revealed the mother's lifelong love and sacrifice for her child.

1. MUMMY

2. “ My m u m only had one eye. I hated her... she was such an embarrassment.

3. She cooked for students & teachers to support the family.

4. There was this one day during elementary school where my m u m came to say hello to me.

5. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me?!

6. I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out.

7. The next day at school one of my classmates said, "EEEE, your m u m only has one eye!"

8. I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my m u m to just disappear.

9. So I confronted her that day and said, " If you're only gonna make me a laughing stock, why don't you just die?!!!"

10. My m u m did not respond!!!

11. I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger.

12. I was oblivious to her feelings…

13. I wanted out of that house..

14. So I studied real hard, got a chance to go to Singapore to study.

15. Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life

16. Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn't seen me in years and she didn't even meet her grandchildren!.

17. When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her.

18. I screamed at her, "How dare you come to my house and scare my children!" GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!"

19. And to this, my mother quietly answered, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address," and she disappeared out of sight.

20. One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house.

21. So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip…

22. After the reunion, I went to the old shack just out of curiosity!!!.

23. My neighbors said that she died.

24. I did not shed a single tear!!.

25. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have…

26. "My dearest son, I think of you all the time..

27. I'm sorry that I came to Singapore and scared your children.

28. I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion.

29. But I may not be able to even get out of bed to see you.

30. I'm sorry that I was a constant embarrassment to you when you were growing up.

31. You see... W hen you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye.

32. As a mother, I couldn't stand watching you having to grow up with one eye.

33. So… I gave you mine .

34. I was so proud of my son who was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye.
