When working with clients, there are many factors at play that not only formed the client in their early years, but also influence them now. The factors that influence them now can include: family, living situation, job situation, friends, religious community, etc. These factors can all influence how a social worker can assist in intervening in a client’s life. Each of these factors can also be included in different systems that influence the client (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016).
Let us take, for example, the case of Lester. Lester was an independent member in his community, church community, and was able to handle his life all by himself. However, after an automobile accident, Lester has done a 180 and can no longer clothe or clean himself (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). This is where systems perspective comes in: what systems in Lester’s life can the social worker use to assist Lester? From the case study, we know that Lester is close with his family, but his sister-in-law has really stepped up to the plate in helping with Lester’s care. Because of Lester’s connections with his religious community, they may be relied on for resources. Lester’s children have not been involved really at all, so they should not be counted on as a system on which Lester can rely (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). Lester will have to have new systems created for him, as he cannot create them for himself anymore.
As a social worker, it is crucial to know the systems on which a client can rely. System Theory is a good theory because of its ability to be used with any client. Knowing what resources are available to a client, as well as their interactions with those resources, is key in creating a treatment plan for the client.

Research has begun to elucidate that persons with mental illness become involved in the criminal justice
system as a result of criminality and not merely because of their mental illness. This study aims to clarify
the similarities and differences in criminal thinking and psychiatric symptomatology between persons
with mental illness who are and are not criminal justice involved. Male and female (n � 94) participants
admitted to an acute psychiatric facility completed measures to assess criminal thinking (i.e., Psycho-
logical Inventory of Criminal Thinking Styles and Criminal Sentiments Scale–Modified) and psychiatric
symptomatology (Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory–Third Edition). In addition to the inpatient
sample, 94 incarcerated persons with mental illness from a previously conducted study were selected
based on their match with the current sample on several key demographic and psychiatric variables. The

Ethical and Professional Conflicts in Correctional Psychology

The role of the mental health professional in a prison setting has changed to reflect the prevailing
ideology of the correctional administration that deemphasizes treatment and emphasizes security
and custodial concerns. As a consequence, mental health professionals who work in corrections
have experienced unique ethical and professional conflicts. Standards were developed to address the
conflicts and provide guidelines for professional conduct, but dilemmas continue to exist. The au-
thors believe this can be attributed to (a) the standards being vague and (b) correctional personnel
not understanding or supporting the standards or the psychologist's role as a mental health profes-
sional. This article examines these propositions in more detail, using vignettes and discussion, and
offers other approaches to resolving the dilemmas and improving the delivery of mental health ser-
vices to incarcerated individuals.
Historical Perspective
Mental health professionals who work in corrections have ex-
perienced ethical and professional conflicts that are unique to
these institutions. Appreciating the mental health professional's
role within a prison entails an examination of how our society
has treated those who violate the law. Historically, most socie-
ties have adopted a philosophy that those individuals who com-
mit criminal acts should be punished. Modern Western judicial
systems have justified their use of punishment on four major
grounds: retribution, deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabili-
tation (Grilliot, 1983; Kerper, 1972). Retribution has Biblical
roots referring to "an eye for an eye." Deterrence operates from
the core belief that those who see individuals punished will be
less likely to follow the example of offenders because of the fear
of punishment. Incapacitation has as its primary goal the pro-
tection of society by rendering offenders unable to repeat the
offense. Rehabilitation is conceptualized as treating or "correct-
ing" offenders so that they can live in society and not reoffend.
The theory of rehabilitation is a relatively new objective used
to justify punishment and has undergone many reformulations
as our society's attitude toward criminal offenders has changed
(Travin, 1989). Early American colonists believed that rehabili-
tation could be accomplished through severe punishment (e.g.,
stocks or gallows). It was not until the 18th century that an in-
stitution incarcerating offenders was viewed as having correc-
tional properties. Reflecting the largely held Protestant values of
the time, it was believed that rehabilitation in such institutions

"Sex is virtually all in the head anyway" (Cloud, 2010). This quote is how chapter six is started, and I find it very suiting for this week's discussion topic. A sex offender definition is someone who has been convicted of a sex crime involving a minor. This offense is severe, and when sentencing at a state or federal level, multiple factors are considered (Sex Offenders and Sex Offenses: Overview 2019). I have heard many people comment that pedophiles should be executed right after the trial, that sexually abusing a child is the unforgivable crime and that a person who commits such a crime has a mind that can not be healed. During Pre-Prac 1, Dr. Gess had stated that whatever population you do not want to work with, that is what you will get. She had shared that her population was pedophiles, and that was her first client. Dr. Gess continued that she ended up discovering that he was abused as a child and did not receive any counseling. He kept the vicious cycle alive, but that she ended up developing a strong rapport with him and learned a lot. Study after study has shown that when an individual experiences childhood trauma, it increases the risk for health and social problems and that it is a common experience for sexual offenders (Levenson, Willis & Prescott, n.d). Research has begun to elucidate that persons with mental illness become involved in the criminal justice
system as a result of criminality and not merely because of their mental illness. This study aims to clarify
the similarities and differences in criminal thinking and psychiatric symptomatology between persons
with mental illness who are and are not criminal justice involved. Male and female (n � 94) participants
admitted to an acute psychiatric facility completed measures to assess criminal thinking (i.e., Psycho-
logical Inventory of Criminal Thinking Styles and Criminal Sentiments Scale–Modified) and psychiatric
symptomatology (Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory–Third Edition). In addition to the inpatient
sample, 94 incarcerated persons with mental illness from a previously conducted study were selected

Ethical and Professional Conflicts in Correctional Psychology

The role of the mental health professional in a prison setting has changed to reflect the prevailing
ideology of the correctional administration that deemphasizes treatment and emphasizes security
and custodial concerns. As a consequence, mental health professionals who work in corrections
have experienced unique ethical and professional conflicts. Standards were developed to address the
conflicts and provide guidelines for professional conduct, but dilemmas continue to exist. The au-
thors believe this can be attributed to (a) the standards being vague and (b) correctional personnel
not understanding or supporting the standards or the psychologist's role as a mental health profes-
sional. This article examines these propositions in more detail, using vignettes and discussion, and
offers other approaches to resolving the dilemmas and improving the delivery of mental health ser-
vices to incarcerated individuals.
Historical Perspective
Mental health professionals who work in corrections have ex-
perienced ethical and professional conflicts that are unique to
these institutions. Appreciating the mental health professional's
role within a prison entails an examination of how our society
has treated those who violate the law. Historically, most socie-
ties have adopted a philosophy that those individuals who com-
mit criminal acts should be punished. Modern Western judicial
systems have justified their use of punishment on four major
grounds: retribution, deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabili-
tation (Grilliot, 1983; Kerper, 1972). Retribution has Biblical
roots referring to "an eye for an eye." Deterrence operates from
the core belief that those who see individuals punished will be
less likely to follow the example of offenders because of the fear
of punishment. Incapacitation has as its primary goal the pro-
tection of society by rendering offenders unable to repeat the
offense. Rehabilitation is conceptualized as treating or "correct-
ing" offenders so that they can live in society and not reoffend.
The theory of rehabilitation is a relatively new objective used
to justify punishment and has undergone many reformulations
as our society's attitude toward criminal offenders has changed
(Travin, 1989). Early American colonists believed that rehabili-
tation could be accomplished through severe punishment (e.g.,
stocks or gallows). It was not until the 18th century that an in-
stitution incarcerating offenders was viewed as having correc-
tional properties. Reflecting the largely held Protestant values of
the time, it was believed that rehabilitation in such institutions

"Sex is virtually all in the head anyway" (Cloud, 2010). This quote is how chapter six is started, and I find it very suiting for this week's discussion topic. A sex offender definition is someone who has been convicted of a sex crime involving a minor. This offense is severe, and when sentencing at a state or federal level, multiple factors are considered (Sex Offenders and Sex Offenses: Overview 2019). I have heard many people comment that pedophiles should be executed right after the trial, that sexually abusing a child is the unforgivable crime and that a person who commits such a crime has a mind that can not be healed. During Pre-Prac 1, Dr. Gess had stated that whatever population you do not want to work with, that is what you will get. She had shared that her population was pedophiles, and that was her first client. Dr. Gess continued that she ended up discovering that he was abused as a child and did not receive any counseling. He kept the vicious cycle alive, but that she ended up developing a strong rapport with him and learned a lot. Ethical behavior is critical when it comes to how society portrays one in terms of
moral principles and ethics in a given situation. In general, ethical conduct is the practice of
doing the right things by observing and adhering to professional standards. In most countries,
the prison populations are on the rising end as most governments try to avoid the pressure in
budgeting for the jails. The United States employs a sentencing structure whereby
individuals are required to cover 85% of their sentences given by the federal court (Bedau
2014). This paper focuses on how ethical behaviors can impact mandatory minimum prison
sentencing standards.
Ethical concerns to be addressed
The laws of mandatory minimum sentencing are the law that allows handing the
minimum prison sentence for crimes such as possession of drugs. These laws are fixed and
made by Congress, as judges cannot tamper with the laws (Oliss 2014). Critics have come
out to say these laws are oppressive and do not apply in the present-day environment.
One of the ethical concerns of the mandatory minimum sentencing laws needing to be
addressed is the unfairness in passing out judgment. In a particular scenario whereby the
judge does not have the capacity to amend the law during the trial, someone who was neither
directly involved in drug conspiracy, nor a significant concern in the case, will end up
suffering the same sentence that is passed onto the main suspect. This makes it difficult for
the individual, who is rarely involved in being heard, in a different scenario as the law tends
to punish them both harshly. The main disparity is this law tends to focus more on drug lords
and the fight against crime as compared to other offenses that are committed (Martin 2017).
The second ethical concern is these laws do not allow room for plea bargains. Since
Congress makes the law, it is hard for the prosecutor who might have wanted to lower the
sentence for a plea. The capacity they are in does not allow them to do so, thus making it
hard for the person who was “less guilty” to serve a fewer number of years in prison as the

law forces the whole lot involved in the same act to serve the same amount of years. Critics
feel this law has less of an impact and deem them as an inappropriate way of ruling as they

Lurigio Loyola University Chicago, Illinois John Fallon Thresholds This paper presents a case study that illuminates the clinical and practical challenges that accompany the treatment of people with serious mental illness (SMI) and criminal involvement. We discuss the historical conditions that led to the influx of a large number of people with SMI into the criminal justice system. We discuss the case history of Richard P., which illustrates the use of Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) to care for criminally involved people with SMI. A written presentation in a legal case and a legal concept is more often beneficial regardless of the case may be or whether a court has directed one to file any. Judges barely complain about written presentation so long as the opposing party is given a copy. Written submission entails the identity of the case plus the party which a barrister is writing the presentation for. It should be brief and not repetitive, be rightfully structured according to the nature of a case, e.g., use of appropriate headings and sub-heading, provide tables of content in complex cases. Headings should not be generic but rather useful, be in a logical order for easy decision making. A written presentation should be written early and often. A problem may arise when drafting the presentation and the earlier they are identified, the easier it will be to fix them.
The written presentation should at least be submitted to a judge a day before the hearing. It is better for one to email the presentation to the chamber then file them at the registry. Written submission should contain an opening, legal issues, and closing submissions. After one is done with writing the presentation, he/she should proofread it to collect grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and poor formatting.
Oral presentation
In oral presentations, the first golden rule is for barristers to know that their first duty is not to their clients but rather to the court. A lawyer must never mislead a court because the court looks upon them for assistance (Mlphurs, 2013). If a court asks a question, the lawyer should answer it; if he or she is unable to answer, he should seek for assistance or take the question on notice. During the hearing, a lawyer should announce his or/her name and the party he appears for transparently. He/she should be prepared with short written notes discussed with any other side beforehand. State matters that are contentious and those that are not, have documents needed ready and copies for the opposing party, bring copies to the court as well and be aware of the power that the court posses to grant the orders your seeking. In the notice of the motion, a lawyer should state the power for relief sought if it is not contained in motion, give copies of any written evidence to the opponents, give summary of the details in the presiding, state what evidence he/she is relying on, The oral presentation should also have an opening submission, evidence, and closing submission. The opening submission should be brief, the evidence should be relevant and finally the closing submission should be referred back to the evidences provided.

Guilt, titillation, and anxious confusion about sexuality and sexual relations between therapist and patient
pervade the psychoanalytic community. Review of state laws and regulations as well as professional
ethics codes reveals a lack of certainty about what constitutes professional misconduct, especially
posttermination. Comparing the training approaches of sex therapy and psychoanalysis, the author
suggests that psychoanalysis will benefit from shifting its focus on extreme cases of egregious sexual

Guilt, titillation, and anxious confusion about sexuality and sexual relations between therapist and patient
pervade the psychoanalytic community. Review of state laws and regulations as well as professional
ethics codes reveals a lack of certainty about what constitutes professional misconduct, especially
posttermination. Comparing the training approaches of sex therapy and psychoanalysis, the author
suggests that psychoanalysis will benefit from shifting its focus on extreme cases of egregious sexual
boundary violations onto greater in-depth exploration of clinically universal experience of powerful
erotic and negative transference and countertransference. Innovative and experiential educational formats
that promote openness, acceptance, confidence, and skill with these dynamics are the best prevention.

One of the first cases that inspired Freud in the development of what would eventually become the Psychoanalytic Theory was the case of Anna O. Anna O. was actually a patient of one of Freud’s colleagues Josef Breuer. Using Breuer’s case notes, Freud was able to analyze the key facts of Anna O’s case.
Anna O. first developed her symptoms while she was taking care of her very ill father with whom she was extremely close. Some of her initial symptoms were loss of appetite to the extent of not eating, weakness, anemia, and development a severe nervous cough. Eventually she developed a severe optic headache and lost the ability to move her head, which then progressed into paralysis of both arms. Her symptoms were not solely physical as she would vacillate between a normal, mental state and a manic-type state in which she would become extremely agitated. There was even a notation of a time for which she hallucinated that the ribbons in her hair were snakes.
Toward the end of her father’s life she stopped speaking her native language of German and instead only spoke in English. A little over a year after she began taking care of her father he passed away. After his passing her symptoms grew to affect her vision, a loss of ability to focus her attention, more extreme hallucinations, and a number of suicidal attempts (Hurst, 1982).
Both Freud and Jung would acknowledge that unconscious processes are at work in this woman's problems. However, they would come to different conclusions about the origin of these problems and the method by which she should be treated.

Ethical concerns to be addressed
The laws of mandatory minimum sentencing are the law that allows handing the
minimum prison sentence for crimes such as possession of drugs. These laws are fixed and
made by Congress, as judges cannot tamper with the laws (Oliss 2014). Critics have come
out to say these laws are oppressive and do not apply in the present-day environment.
One of the ethical concerns of the mandatory minimum sentencing laws needing to be
addressed is the unfairness in passing out judgment. In a particular scenario whereby the
judge does not have the capacity to amend the law during the trial, someone who was neither
directly involved in drug conspiracy, nor a significant concern in the case, will end up
suffering the same sentence that is passed onto the main suspect. This makes it difficult for
the individual, who is rarely involved in being heard, in a different scenario as the law tends
to punish them both harshly. The main disparity is this law tends to focus more on drug lords
and the fight against crime as compared to other offenses that are committed (Martin 2017).
The second ethical concern is these laws do not allow room for plea bargains. Since
Congress makes the law, it is hard for the prosecutor who might have wanted to lower the
sentence for a plea. The capacity they are in does not allow them to do so, thus making it
hard for the person who was “less guilty” to serve a fewer number of years in prison as the

A written presentation in a legal case and a legal concept is more often beneficial regardless of the case may be or whether a court has directed one to file any. Judges barely complain about written presentation so long as the opposing party is given a copy. Written submission entails the identity of the case plus the party which a barrister is writing the presentation for. It should be brief and not repetitive, be rightfully structured according to the nature of a case, e.g., use of appropriate headings and sub-heading, provide tables of content in complex cases. ethics codes reveals a lack of certainty about what constitutes professional misconduct, especially
posttermination. Comparing the training approaches of sex therapy and psychoanalysis, the author
suggests that psychoanalysis will benefit from shifting its focus on extreme cases of egregious sexual
boundary violations onto greater in-depth exploration of clinically universal experience of powerful
erotic and negative transference and countertransference. Innovative and experiential educational formats
that promote openness, acceptance, confidence, and skill with these dynamics are the best prevention.

One of the first cases that inspired Freud in the development of what would eventually become the Psychoanalytic Theory was the case of Anna O. Anna O. was actually a patient of one of Freud’s colleagues Josef Breuer. Using Breuer’s case notes, Freud was able to analyze the key facts of Anna O’s case.
Anna O. first developed her symptoms while she was taking care of her very ill father with whom she was extremely close. Some of her initial symptoms were loss of appetite to the extent of not eating, weakness, anemia, and development a severe nervous cough. Eventually she developed a severe optic headache and lost the ability to move her head, which then progressed into paralysis of both arms. Her symptoms were not solely physical as she would vacillate between a normal, mental state and a manic-type state in which she would become extremely agitated. There was even a notation of a time for which she hallucinated that the ribbons in her hair were snakes.
Toward the end of her father’s life she stopped speaking her native language of German and instead only spoke in English. A little over a year after she began taking care of her father he passed away. After his passing her symptoms grew to affect her vision, a loss of ability to focus her attention, more extreme hallucinations, and a number of suicidal attempts (Hurst, 1982).
Both Freud and Jung would acknowledge that unconscious processes are at work in this woman's problems. However, they would come to different conclusions about the origin of these problems and the method by which she should be treated.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
