A little over a year after she began taking care of her father he passed away. After his passing her symptoms grew to affect her vision, a loss of ability to focus her attention, more extreme hallucinations, and a number of suicidal attempts (Hurst, 1982).
Both Freud and Jung would acknowledge that unconscious processes are at work in this woman's problems. However, they would come to different conclusions about the origin of these problems and the method by which she should be treated.

Max Wertheimer was a resilient young man. His father ran a business college in Prague where him and his family lived without controversy. That was, until his family was forced out of Germany due to the growing threat of Nazism. Before this, though, Max was able to obtain a traditional education, against his fathers wishes, and take many classes before focusing on philosophy and psychology. When studying at the University of Berlin, Wertheimer worked in the Phonogram Archives. Which was basically a library of music samples recorded onto wax cylinders originating from a vast array of countries. Music had an immense influence on the establishment of Gestalt psychology because of the use of melodies to teach its concepts. For example, a melody exists due to the organization of the notes, not because of the notes on their own-a key theory in Gestalt psychology.
After conducting research on music produced by a Sri Lankan tribe, the effects of brain injuries on speech and language comprehension, and the mathematical thinking abilities of native peoples, Wertheimer moved on (largely by accident) to study apparent motion This would not only make him famous, but shine light onto the legitimacy of Gestalt psychology. While traveling by train, he noticed that parts of the landscape that were further away appeared to be traveling with the train. He deduced that this perception of moving objects that were clearly not in motion had to be originating in his brain. He then set up shop at the University of Frankfurt where he invented a tachistoscope and tested this phenomenon, later dubbed the phi phenomenon. Thus, designating the official start of Gestalt psychology.
This discovery was much more than just that. Wertheimer attempted to find the physiological causation for the phenomenon and was able to rule out several, older previous explanations. Although the true reasoning behind the phi phenomenon has yet to be discovered, the research that took place in pursuit of that truth paved the way for the branch of psychology as a whole. It is interesting to think where (or if at all) Gestalt psychology would be today if Wertheimer had slept on that train and continued with his vacationing instead.

Born in Moravia in Czechoslovakia in 1856 to a Jewish family
Had a very loving and protective mother; stern and authoritarian father (20 years older than his mother).
His father was a widower. From his father’s first marriage he had two elder brothers, one of which had a son Sigmund’s age. So… Sigmund was born an uncle.
Freud and his family moved to Vienna when he was four years of age. He stayed there close to 80 years, moving only when the Nazi party took power in 1938.
Freud was the oldest of his five siblings and given preferential treatment.
He had dreams of becoming a general or lawyer, but because he was a Jew he couldn’t.
He began medical studies at the University of Vienna and graduated 8 yrs. later.
Professional life
He established a practice as a clinical neurologist in 1881.
Freud made notable contributions to research. Developing a method to of staining cells for microscopic study.
As a physician, he explored the anesthetic properties of cocaine.
In his private practice Freud focused on the study of neurosis (emotional disturbances.)
He released Interpretation of Dreams in 1900.

Origins of psychoanalysis
On his return from France, Freud became influenced by a Viennese physician and friend, Joseph Breuer.
Psychoanalysis began with the case history of Joseph Breuer’s patient, Anna O.
Psychoanalysis - A treatment approach based on the observation that individuals are often unaware of many of the factors that determine their emotions and behavior. These unconscious factors may be the source of considerable distress and unhappiness, and other troubling personality traits.
Anna O. experienced what is now know as conversion disorder (called hysteria at the time)
Breuer used hypnosis and “talking method”
After talking about her father’s illness and death, Anna experienced catharsis (emotional release), and her symptoms were relieved.
She became very attached to Dr. Breuer causing problems with his wife… she offered him a phantom pregnancy as her last symptom.
Freud starts working more on his own…
Freud used the “talking method” to assist his patients in remembering past traumatic events first through hypnosis, but later abandoned this technique when he realized that not all patients could be hypnotized.

This week we learned about Freud's theory and the theories of neo-Freudians that differed from his. Freud had many followers and some went on to develop their own theories that expanded upon his own theories. Alfred Adler and Carl Jung were two of his followers who did not agree on Freud's "excessive emphasis on sexual instincts" (Cervone & Pervin, 2016, p. 102). Adler put more of an emphasis on social urges, as well as conscious thoughts, which differed from Freud's preference of sexual instincts and the unconscious. Adler's theory deals a lot with inferiority and the motivations we have to compensate for that (Cervone & Pervin, 2016, p. 104). Jung, on the other hand, hadn't been solely a follower of Freud's; he had been quite close to Freud and Freud actually believed Jung to be his protégé, who would carry on the psychoanalytic tradition. However, this didn't happen after conflict arose between the two. Jung believed that Freud had emphasized sexuality too heavily, much like Adler did. Jung viewed the libido as a "generalized life energy," not as a sexual instinct, which is what Freud believed. Jung also believed our personality development to not be solely focused on what had happened in the past, which differed from Freud's thinking.
Much like Adler and Jung, Karen Horney and Harry Stack Sullivan broke from Freud's way of thinking and went on to develop their own theories. Horney's theory put much more emphasis on cultural influences, as opposed to biological ones (Cervone & Pervin, 2016, p. 107). She also differed greatly on the view of women that Freud had and was very outspoken about the male bias that may have been present throughout his work concerning women. Sullivan also emphasized the role of social factors and contributed a way of thinking about development and personality that differed from Freud's. He put emphasis on our emotional experiences "not being based in biological drives, as Freud posited, but in relations with others" (Cervone & Pervin, 2016, p. 108).
Freud never did experiments or implemented the use of tests throughout his career. He developed his theories purely from case study evidence. He used free association with his clients and thought it to be a scientific method and primary evidence for his theories, which is problematic. Adler and Horney did a lot of their work through observation, as well. However, Jung and Sullivan had used tests to find results, which helped them develop their theories. As for ethics, I do not believe that ethics were fully considered or upheld for the studies by the neo-Freudians. Reliability and validity is an issue when observation is how you come to your results

One of the very first cases that caught Freud’s attention when he was starting to develop his psychoanalytic theory was that of Anna O, a patient of fellow psychiatrist Josef Breuer. Although Freud did not directly treat her, he did thoroughly analyze her case as he was fascinated by the fact that her hysteria was “cured” by Breuer. It is her case that he believes was the beginning of the psychoanalytic approach.

Max Wertheimer was a resilient young man. His father ran a business college in Prague where him and his family lived without controversy. That was, until his family was forced out of Germany due to the growing threat of Nazism. Before this, though, Max was able to obtain a traditional education, against his fathers wishes, and take many classes before focusing on philosophy and psychology. When studying at the University of Berlin, Wertheimer worked in the Phonogram Archives. Which was basically a library of music samples recorded onto wax cylinders originating from a vast array of countries. Music had an immense influence on the establishment of Gestalt psychology because of the use of melodies to teach its concepts. For example, a melody exists due to the organization of the notes, not because of the notes on their own-a key theory in Gestalt psychology.
After conducting research on music produced by a Sri Lankan tribe, the effects of brain injuries on speech and language comprehension, and the mathematical thinking abilities of native peoples, Wertheimer moved on (largely by accident) to study apparent motion This would not only make him famous, but shine light onto the legitimacy of Gestalt psychology. While traveling by train, he noticed that parts of the landscape that were further away appeared to be traveling with the train. He deduced that this perception of moving objects that were clearly not in motion had to be originating in his brain. He then set up shop at the University of Frankfurt where he invented a tachistoscope and tested this phenomenon, later dubbed the phi phenomenon. Thus, designating the official start of Gestalt psychology.
This discovery was much more than just that. Wertheimer attempted to find the physiological causation for the phenomenon and was able to rule out several, older previous explanations. Although the true reasoning behind the phi phenomenon has yet to be discovered, the research that took place in pursuit of that truth paved the way for the branch of psychology as a whole. It is interesting to think where (or if at all) Gestalt psychology would be today if Wertheimer had slept on that train and continued with his vacationing instead.

One of the most interesting things about Adler’s childhood is that he was a sickly child and almost died at age 4, which was actually the reason he chose to pursue a doctorate degree. “He did survive and vowed to become a better doctor than the one who treated him” (Kardas, 2014, p. 385). Early life
Born in Moravia in Czechoslovakia in 1856 to a Jewish family
Had a very loving and protective mother; stern and authoritarian father (20 years older than his mother).
His father was a widower. From his father’s first marriage he had two elder brothers, one of which had a son Sigmund’s age. So… Sigmund was born an uncle.
Freud and his family moved to Vienna when he was four years of age. He stayed there close to 80 years, moving only when the Nazi party took power in 1938.
Freud was the oldest of his five siblings and given preferential treatment.
He had dreams of becoming a general or lawyer, but because he was a Jew he couldn’t.
He began medical studies at the University of Vienna and graduated 8 yrs. later.
Professional life
He established a practice as a clinical neurologist in 1881.
Freud made notable contributions to research. Developing a method to of staining cells for microscopic study.
As a physician, he explored the anesthetic properties of cocaine.
In his private practice Freud focused on the study of neurosis (emotional disturbances.)
He released Interpretation of Dreams in 1900.
There was a group of doctors who worked in Vienna that would hang out and talk: Jung, Adler, Jones, Brill, Sandor.
Origins of psychoanalysis
On his return from France, Freud became influenced by a Viennese physician and friend, Joseph Breuer.
Psychoanalysis began with the case history of Joseph Breuer’s patient, Anna O.
Psychoanalysis - A treatment approach based on the observation that individuals are often unaware of many of the factors that determine their emotions and behavior. These unconscious factors may be the source of considerable distress and unhappiness, and other troubling personality traits.
Anna O. experienced what is now know as conversion disorder (called hysteria at the time)
Breuer used hypnosis and “talking method”
After talking about her father’s illness and death, Anna experienced catharsis (emotional release), and her symptoms were relieved.
She became very attached to Dr. Breuer causing problems with his wife… she offered him a phantom pregnancy as her last symptom.
Freud starts working more on his own…
Freud used the “talking method” to assist his patients in remembering past traumatic events first through hypnosis, but later abandoned this technique when he realized that not all patients could be hypnotized.

This week we learned about Freud's theory and the theories of neo-Freudians that differed from his. Freud had many followers and some went on to develop their own theories that expanded upon his own theories. Alfred Adler and Carl Jung were two of his followers who did not agree on Freud's "excessive emphasis on sexual instincts" (Cervone & Pervin, 2016, p. 102). Adler put more of an emphasis on social urges, as well as conscious thoughts, which differed from Freud's preference of sexual instincts and the unconscious. Adler's theory deals a lot with inferiority and the motivations we have to compensate for that (Cervone & Pervin, 2016, p. 104). Jung, on the other hand, hadn't been solely a follower of Freud's; he had been quite close to Freud and Freud actually believed Jung to be his protégé, who would carry on the psychoanalytic tradition. However, this didn't happen after conflict arose between the two. Jung believed that Freud had emphasized sexuality too heavily, much like Adler did. Jung viewed the libido as a "generalized life energy," not as a sexual instinct, which is what Freud believed. Jung also believed our personality development to not be solely focused on what had happened in the past, which differed from Freud's thinking.
Much like Adler and Jung, Karen Horney and Harry Stack Sullivan broke from Freud's way of thinking and went on to develop their own theories. Horney's theory put much more emphasis on cultural influences, as opposed to biological ones (Cervone & Pervin, 2016, p. 107). She also differed greatly on the view of women that Freud had and was very outspoken about the male bias that may have been present throughout his work concerning women. Sullivan also emphasized the role of social factors and contributed a way of thinking about development and personality that differed from Freud's. He put emphasis on our emotional experiences "not being based in biological drives, as Freud posited, but in relations with others" (Cervone & Pervin, 2016, p. 108).
Freud never did experiments or implemented the use of tests throughout his career. He developed his theories purely from case study evidence. He used free association with his clients and thought it to be a scientific method and primary evidence for his theories, which is problematic. Adler and Horney did a lot of their work through observation, as well. However, Jung and Sullivan had used tests to find results, which helped them develop their theories. As for ethics, I do not believe that ethics were fully considered or upheld for the studies by the neo-Freudians. Reliability and validity is an issue when observation is how you come to your results

It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

- 1. One of the very first cases that caught Freud’s attention when he was starting to develop his psychoanalytic theory was that of Anna O, a patient of fellow psychiatrist Josef Breuer. Although Freud did not directly treat her, he did thoroughly analyze her case as he was fascinated by the fact that her hysteria was “cured” by Breuer. It is her case that he believes was the beginning of the psychoanalytic approach. Through your analysis of this case, you will not only look deeper into Freud’s psychoanalytic theory but also see how Jung’s neo-psychoanalytic theory compares and contrasts with Freud’s theory. Review the following: The Case of Anna O. One of the first cases that inspired Freud in the development of what would eventually become the Psychoanalytic Theory was the case of Anna O. Anna O. was actually a patient of one of Freud’s colleagues Josef Breuer. Using Breuer’s case notes, Freud was able to analyze the key facts of Anna O’s case. Anna O. first developed her symptoms while she was taking care of her very ill father with whom she was extremely close. Some of her initial symptoms were loss of appetite to the extent of not eating, weakness, anemia, and development a severe nervous cough. Eventually she developed a severe optic headache and lost the ability to move her head, which then progressed into paralysis of both arms. Her symptoms were not solely physical as she would vacillate between a normal, mental state and a manic-type state in which she would become extremely agitated. There was even a notation of a time for which she hallucinated that the ribbons in her hair were snakes. Toward the end of her father’s life she stopped speaking her native language of German and instead only spoke in English. A little over a year after she began taking care of her father he passed away. After his passing her symptoms grew to affect her vision, a loss of ability to focus her attention, more extreme hallucinations, and a number of suicidal attempts (Hurst, 1982).
