We are a building under construction... ...inside and out
Our Growing Community During Our OMLI Journey Special Education 34 54 *61 Report Card Rating Strong Strong Exceptional * Enrollment was capped at 905 due to building space. Number does not include Happy Valley students being temporarily served at other buildings this year. Total Enrollment 765 811 *905 Free/Reduced Lunch 61 83 *116 05-06 06-07 07-08
Ways our OMLI experiences have impacted teachers and instructors over the three years “ I plan on concentrating on teaching my class how to listen to understand, by asking clarifying questions.” “ Provides a good reminder about promoting respectful discourse about math” “ Connecting more to community agreement and how, why...” “ Take time to look at problems using multiple ways to solve them”
“ Multiple solutions- justify why various ways work” “ Focus on discourse/ discussion in mathematics, rather than direct instruction/ memorization of steps” “ More student discourse, more student proving/ teaching” “ I will have students try to present more than one way of answering/solving problems” “ I intend to have students explain strategies more often as part of their math sharing-encouraging them to respond more than I jump in”
Skills and tools to reach these goals “ I will try to regularly evaluate math lessons to enhance student learning” “ Use Lesson Planning Framework as a means of structuring some lessons/units” “ Try to be more aware of the mathematical ideas that are likely to come up during particular lessons by predicting student responses” “ Use lesson Summary as a reflection tool” “ Being more conscious of what the main objectives of the lesson and whether the secondary targets will be reached enroute to main target”
What the students say about why they are better mathematicians “ We do math everyday.” 1st grade “ I learned how to do different strategies.” 3rd grade “ Today I know how to graph data on many different sorts of graphs and charts, sometimes even plots. This year I have learned the stem-and-leaf plot, and how to graph a stacked bar graph.” 5th grade “ It helps when other kids go up to give examples.” 3rd grade “ I was super excited that I understood what to do.” 6th grade
“ I am better at math today because my teacher always told us to think about new ways to do things. She gave me new strategies on problems and told us to do top quality work.” 6th grade “ At first I could count by twos to 20; now I can count by twos to 100.” Kindergarten “ We practice.” 1st grade “ I have learned new strategies. I have learned multiplication and division so that makes addition and subtraction more easier.” 3rd grade “ We do base 10 bank.” 1st grade “ I am better at math because I have learned new strategies in every grade and have found even more efficient ways to do things.” 6th grade
Where We Are Heading... * Continue to focus on math as a school goal and provide professional development * Continue to set up grade level planning meetings to use the Lesson Planning Framework Tool, and to analyze lessons to target core mathematical ideas * Continue to share and expand the leadership among the staff so when our staff divides into two buildings, the work will carry on
