Mistakes you made:
• Retold the passage without any/minimal
quotes
• No analysis of HOW the language PRESENTS
characters/relationships etc.
• Referred to other areas of the novel, not the
extract.
What you need to do:
• Find and highlight approx. 4 examples in the
text that relate to the question – that is then
your evidence.
• Close language analysis.
• Repeat the question each time you start a new
point.
• Focus on the extract entirely!
• Example: In this extract a small detail that the
writer uses to present the relationship
between George and Lennie is in the way
Lennie asks questions of George. “George?”
“Huh?”. The way the language is presented it
suggests Lennie asks a lot of questions and
George is tired of it. It makes me think of a
father and toddler relationship because the
questions are of a childish nature connected
with “rabbits”…
For part B:
• Find approx. 4 quotes/examples from other areas
of the text that show/prove the question.
• Don’t retell the story.
• Example: At the time the novel is set, George and
Lennie are immediately presented as different by
the way they travel together, “Say, what game
you playing with him…”. The Boss immediately
suspects George is up to no good by travelling
with Lennie, as close friendships like this were
uncommon. This tells you that back then, migrant
farm workers typically lived a lonely existence,
which makes G and L stand out as being different.
“Because I got you…”
