This document provides a summary of the on-the-job training conducted by Lois Isiah Jashley O. Villalba at AMH Philippines Incorporation. The training lasted 240 hours from June 1 to July 14, 2017 and involved activities like surveying, learning to use equipment like the Leica Total Station, processing data in AutoCAD and Excel. The trainee gained experience in different types of surveys and was able to complete tasks except for a relocation survey. Overall, the trainee found the experience valuable for learning practical skills in geodetic engineering.

COMPANY DATA
AMH Philippines, Incorporation is an academe-linked engineering consulting
company established in 1999 and based inside UP Diliman, Quezon City. The name
AMH was a combination of the initials of a great Filipino engineer known as
Alejandrino Melchor and the name of the College of Engineering building known as
Melchol Hall, AM + MH = AMH.
The vision of the company is to provide its clients with the best engineering
solutions, nurture highly-technical and values-oriented partners, consultants and
employees, and create opportunities and to support academe in instruction, research
and extension work. The company also fosters among its members the following core
values: truth, localness and merit.
AMH Philippines, Inc. offers several services such as geotechnical
engineering, structural engineering, civil works, water-environmental-coastal
engineering, and a variety of other consultancy and design services that involves
surveying, architectural plumbing, and construction management.
The AMH GE interns started their On-the-Job Training last June 1, 2017 and
have acquired 240 hours in July 14, 2017 (June 1 to July 14). And, the interns have
decided that they will extend their stay in the company until July 28 in order to gain
more experience and practical knowledge. They have been assigned to the surveying
team as a consequence of their job description. The people involved during the
training program were Paul Gaton, Engr. Rany Dimaculangan and Engr. Gerard
Carpena.

TRAINING PROGRAM
The company aims to ensure growth, to become an innovative model, to
promote professionalism, to foster the company core values, to mentor, to provide
experience of the corporate world and to give a family feeling to the interns during
their stay in the company.
Work Schedule:
Week 1: Orientation and familiarization of work and equipment
Week 2-6: Research, Survey, Survey Plan
Note: Work Schedule varies depending on the on-going projects
The training mostly occurred in Maginhawa office and sometimes in other
places where the field survey happened such as in Ortigas (Saint Poveda College),
Pasig, Cavite (Shell Daang Hari), Edsa Malibay (Shell), Ormoc Leyte, Taguig City
(Shell-Heritage Park) and Davao (Kopiat Island).

EVALUATION
This part of the paper would discuss the achievements, failures, evidence
of background preparation of trainees upon the start of the training, integration of
the interns with the company personnel, attendance, punctuality, interest,
commitment, and the school-company coordination.
Achievements
The interns were able to experience the following:
1. Familiarizing with the instrument Leica and software necessary
for the job such as Auto-Cad and MS Excel
2. Work with diversified people
3. Uphold with the current core values of the company such as
merit, localness and truth,
4. Make decisions that would be convenient; and
5. Dealing with unexpected problems.
The equipment, machinery testing apparatus that were used during the
training were the following:
 Leica Total Station
 Echo sounder
 Range meter

The proposed program includes different types of surveys such as
Relocation, Topographic, As-built and Bathymetric survey. The interns were able
to experience all in the proposed program except for Relocation Survey. This
implies that the program was incomplete.
The table below will distinguish the comparison between the strong and
weak points of the training program used by the interns.

The training program is meant to give practical knowledge about geodetic
engineering and foster unforgettable work experience. The table below will

Failures
Failure is avoidable if one is careful, however, there are times that one is
bound to fail due to unfortunate events like when the instrument run out of battery
or someone accidentally hit the instrument. It would be clear that failures happen
because someone made a mistake.
The following are the most common causes of failures during the training
program:
 Carelessness
 Instrumental failure
 Due to environmental factors
 Lack of knowledge
The suggested solutions for failures are stated below:
 Be careful and prepared in the project or anything in particular
as possible as you can
 Check the instrument before doing a survey
 Keep yourself updated of the weather and other natural
phenomena
 Study
In order to overcome the failures, one has to be attentive and motivated to
do so. Following the suggested solutions or trying to find an alternative solution
would be handy in overcoming these failures.

Evidence of background preparation of trainees upon the start of the
training
The supervisors trained the interns about all the necessary manual skills in
order to do the different types of surveys and the programs that are used to
process the data. Also, the interns were taught about the concepts behind
Relocation, Resurvey, As-Built, Bathymetric Survey and Topographic Survey.

Figure 1 is a proof that the interns were able to use and have a hands-on
training with the Leica Total Station during their training.

Figure 3 is the pre-processed data of Maginhawa Office. It will be then
processed into an As-Built and will be used as a basis of study for the office
renovation in the future.

Poveda survey was one among the longest and laborious work that the
interns did. Figure 4 shows the data from the actual survey overlaid in the
digitized topographic map of Poveda Saint College.

Figure 6 is a lot plan which required several researches in order to prove
that the lots are adjoining. The interns were able to process the data and generate
the final output through the aid of their supervisors.
Personal relations: Integration with the company personnel
The student assistants were able to easily integrate and associate with the
company personnel within the second week through the aid of the supervisors and

familiar faces in the office. The company facilitates activities such as Common
Merienda and Sports Festival that started last July 10 and are expected to end on
the second week of August. The sports festival includes badminton, table tennis,
basketball and fun run where the last two games helped a lot in the integration
process of interns because it promotes camaraderie and communication among the
participants. On the other hand, Common Merienda is an event where every
employee is required to attend and to celebrate the birthday of some employees
with the same birth month.
Attendance and punctuality
The attendance and time logs are checked through biometric system. The
interns were able to comply with the proper time in and out during the office
hours, either 8 am to 5 pm or 9 am to 6 pm. Punctuality is definitely out of the
question. After time in and time out, each person will have to record the activities
and projects they did for the total number of hours in MIS, Management
Information System.
Interest and commitment
The interns were very much interested and dedicated on the On-the-Job
Training because they believed that it is a ticket to adulthood and it will shape

them to become good engineers someday. They followed every single instructions
and did it with commitment and focus.
School-Company coordination
AMH is an academe-linked engineering consulting firm which implies
that the coordination between the company and the school is pretty much easy and
flexible. The supervisors were approachable and kind individuals toward the
interns.

RECOMMENDATION
The recommendation chapter is where the trainees share their comments and
insights in order to improve the training program incorporated to the education
offered by the Department of Geodetic Engineering, University of the Philippines
Diliman. On the part of the company, it will serve as a notice and a guidance to make
their management better in terms of internship programs.
Potential of company as a training ground
The AMH is a good avenue in training future engineers, however, the focus is
mainly on civil engineers which implies that the geodetic engineers are overshadowed
and there is a need of improvement in their sector. The company employees treated
the interns very well and the atmosphere in the office was that of professionals. The
company was able to assist the students to gain experience and practical knowledge
about their field.
a. Availability and appropriateness of facilities, equipment and machinery
The facilities are sufficient enough, the equipment for conventional
surveying are just adequate and the machinery is quite good. However, it
would appear that surveying would be easier if there are more equipment
like an AUV or GPS since these two makes the survey several times faster
and less effort. In general, the company has appropriate facilities,

equipment and machinery needed for conventional survey necessary for
gathering supplementary data for the other fields of expertise in the office.
b. Company personnel cooperation
The company is very capable in maximizing the use of its
personnel. The company personnel are cooperative and helpful. They
helped and gave advices to the trainees in processing data.
Duration of training
The duration of the training was just enough to acquire the necessary skills and
knowledge. The interns were able to maximize their internship through complying
properly with their supervisors’ advices and extending their stay as interns in the
company.
Suggestions for the improvement of the training program
The interns suggest that there should be workshops or seminars that will be
offered to the incoming interns to prepare them to the company. These workshops and
seminars can be useful in developing the students’ confidence and performance
during the training program. Also, it would be beneficial if the training program
would be extended to at least two months in order to fully digest the skills and
knowledge learned from the company.

Advise to future trainees to the company or to other companies in general.
To all the students who will undergo an on-the-job training, don’t forget to take
note in your mind all the important things that you will experience, listen to what
your supervisors will tell you and don’t take their anger deeply but make it a lesson
for your upcoming failures, try to understand the world of professionals and
distinguish the difference between your current world to it, understand the difference
between theoretical and practical knowledge, and do your best in everything.
