What is On-the-Job Training
(OJT)?
Training by an employer that is provided to a paid participant
while engaged in productive work in a job that:
 Provides knowledge or skills essential to the job
 Provides reimbursement to the employer of up to 50% of
the wage rate of the participant
 Is limited in duration as appropriate to the occupation for
which the participant is being trained
 Provides participant with a credential or certification of
skill attainment such as a high school diploma, including
special diplomas; GED or other recognized equivalents;
post-secondary degrees/certificates; recognized skill
standards (OCP); and licensure or industry-recognized
certificates.
Who is Eligible for
OJT?
 Employer:
 Operating in Miami-Dade or Monroe county
for a minimum of 1 year prior to date of
agreement
 Fully licensed to conduct business in
Miami-Dade or Monroe county
 Has at least one full-time employee
 Financial viability
 Current on all federal, state and local tax
obligations
 Proof of worker’s compensation coverage

 A temporary employment agency may serve as
the employer of record for purposes of
providing OJT to a participant in regular, on-
going employment in a specific occupation
(and not when such agency provides
probationary, seasonal, temporary, or

requirements as a regular employer.

including periodic increases, as similarly situated
employees as well as equal working conditions and
fringe benefits (i.e. holiday pay, insurance, taxes).
Prohibitions
 OJT not allowed for occupations with high
turnover rates (i.e. customer service
clerks).
 Source of income cannot include tips,
commissions, or piecework.
 Participant cannot work from home.

Training?
 Employer-specific training in which the
employer can recoup up to 50% of the
training costs incurred per trainee
 Reimbursable expenses include:
instructor’s salary, tuition, curriculum
development, textbooks, manuals, tools
and other supplies.
Customized Training
Requirements
 Business must legally operate in Miami-Dade County or
Monroe County and remain current with all tax
obligations and licenses.
 South Florida Workforce (SFW) must confirm that the
participant requires training and that his/her skills will
improve after the training period.
 Participants must train in occupations that pay a
minimum of $11.00/hr.
 Employer must retain participant after the end of the
contract.
 Reimbursements apply to programs at approved
educational institutions during the period of training,
which cannot exceed 40 hours per week.
 Participant eligibility is the same as OJT.
