Classification of hazardous area for lighting
Hazardous areas can contain flammable gases, vapors, or dusts that could cause fires or explosions. These areas are classified based on the type of hazard and likelihood of a hazardous atmosphere being present. The Class/Division system used in North America categorizes areas based on whether hazardous materials are likely to be present continuously or occasionally. The international Zone system defines three zones based on the probability and duration of hazardous atmospheres. Equipment used in hazardous areas must use explosion-proof techniques to prevent ignition, such as flame-proofing or intrinsic safety.

Major fires in India have caused significant loss of life and property damage over the years. A 1995 school fire in Dabwali, Haryana killed 446 people including students and parents. In 1997, a fire at the Uphaar Cinema in New Delhi killed 59 people and injured 103 during a movie screening. More recently in 2011, a fire at the AMRI Hospital in Kolkata killed 70 patients due to burns and suffocation.
Monitoring and control of pump and treat systems in gasoline stations

One of the most serious contamination problems in LA in the early 2000's was leaking from underground gasoline storage tanks. At high levels of VOC's (thousands of ppm), the pump and treat effluent can simply be flared. At about 1,000 ppm, it requires too much auxiliary fuel to burn the effluent. A new collection system such as a carbon bed is required. Continuous monitoring is required to determine when breakthrough of the VOC's occurs. Then, the carbon bed should be changed.
The most popular technique for carbon bed monitoring is photoionization and the 112 instrument includes a programmable setpoint that shuts down the pump allowing the carbon bed to be changed. The application of continuous monitoring instrumentation to soil vapor extraction (SVE) is described as one of the few innovative technologies that has gained wide use for cleaning up contaminated sights.

An oil depot fire in Jaipur, India in 2009 caused devastating damage. [1] A leak of about 1,000 tons of petrol occurred during a transfer operation between two tanks, forming a large vapor cloud that ignited in an explosion around 7:30pm. [2] The fire spread to all 11 tanks on site over the next five days. Eleven people died and 150 were injured in the explosions and fire. Nearby homes and businesses were damaged and 500,000 people had to be evacuated. Investigations found failures to follow safety procedures during the transfer and deficiencies in the site's fire protection systems contributed to the severity of the incident.

Currently, there is a growing demand for standardization and interoperability in energy data and modeling. Open source standards and specifications within the energy sector can also alleviate challenges associated with data fragmentation, transparency, and accessibility. At the same time, it is crucial to consider privacy and security concerns throughout the development of open source platforms.
This webinar will delve into the motivations behind establishing LF Energy’s Carbon Data Specification Consortium. It will provide an overview of the draft specifications and the ongoing progress made by the respective working groups.
Three primary specifications will be discussed:
-Discovery and client registration, emphasizing transparent processes and secure and private access
-Customer data, centering around customer tariffs, bills, energy usage, and full consumption disclosure
-Power systems data, focusing on grid data, inclusive of transmission and distribution networks, generation, intergrid power flows, and market settlement data

From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.

High performance Serverless Java on AWS- GoTo Amsterdam 2024
Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.
