Microsoft Project in Manufacturing and Resources - Presented by AtidanDavid J Rosenthal
In these demanding economic times, many executives are facing sharper scrutiny of their discretionary spending. This increases the importance of effectively identifying, selecting, and delivering product portfolios that best align with an organization’s business strategy. Best-practice portfolio selection techniques provide a handshake between value optimization — that is, alignment with business priorities and maximizing ROI — and resource utilization, meaning the understanding of resource capabilities and availability. Together, these techniques help PMOs recommend not only which product to undertake, but to forecast their delivery.
Vision
Organizations can make business strategies more objective by adopting structured techniques for defining, prioritizing, and communicating business imperatives, and consistently evaluating each competing initiative that contributes to strategic priorities. Adopting a structured portfolio selection process helps organizations accomplish the following:
Define and communicate the business strategy: Many organizations publish mission statements and high-level strategic objectives. Few of them, however, break down their strategy into actionable, measurable, and unique business drivers. Defining and effectively communicating the business strategy provides a blueprint that organizational departments can understood and implement.
Drive executive consensus around business driver priorities: Objectively prioritizing the business strategy and driving executive consensus can help your organization more effectively assess competing initiatives and select the optimal portfolio.
Objectively prioritize competing products from multiple dimensions: Prioritizing products by using a variety of value measurements (e.g., strategic value, financial value, and risk) provides a framework for assessing requests from multiple dimensions and for creating a common currency with which to make comparisons.
Identify the optimal portfolio under varying budget and portfolio constraints: Facing budget cuts or requests that exceed the allocated budget creates a daunting task for PMOs. Additional variables, such as inter-product dependencies and regulatory requirements, can further compound the problem, creating a challenge in effectively modeling scenarios that will help identify the right products for an organization to undertake. Accurately capturing realistic cost and benefit estimates for products early in their lifecycle helps executives effectively select portfolios that maximize ROI under varying budget constraints and measure financial performance during product execution.
Effectively communicate tradeoffs: Budget, available resources, dependencies, pet products, and compliance requirements can potentially affect the overall value of selected product portfolios. Being able to identify and alter constraints helps PMOs communicate tradeoffs to the executive team and enhance the potential value gained from the resulting

Implementing Smooth Transformation when Change is Constant
The long lifespan of Energy projects inevitably brings change
whether they are strategic, political and environmental.
Also technical advances, resources, skills and meeting legal and
safety requirements can make hitting milestones challenging.
Not hitting project milestones will have a disastrous effect on costs,
schedules and team performance. OEM have a track record in
working with complex projects so that people and their behaviour
are performing at optimum levels of performance.
Your budgets will be met; costs driven down with no over run, over
spend or scope creep. OEM alleviates project ‘bottlenecks’ and
therefore ensures production and performance success!
Change is at the heart of everything achieved in organisations. When
leaders and teams have the motivation, insight and tools to make
smooth lasting changes then they are empowered to reach collective
goals, both personally, at project level and across organisations.
OEM protects against any ambiguity by providing, checklists,
standards and transparency, as well as a methodology for all parties
to work in harmony. It incorporates due diligence into every day
working life and clarity for individuals by giving them a code to work
to. It is highly adaptable and can be re-engineered at each project
milestone and re-used to ensure continuous improvement.

OEM Academy Working In Partnership for Operational Excellence
Talent management is critical to the energy industry. It is well
reported that the expertise is locked into the more experienced
professionals. Training courses alone do not unlock talent potential
and transfer the high requirement for this valuable expertise
The Academy’s comprehensive range of skills and services are
specifically designed to align with any energy organisation’s business
goals and objectives, and will powerfully provide an organisation with
the tools to:
` ‘Capture’ valuable expertise that exists within an organisation and
transfer it into the workforce.
` Train ‘cutting edge’ business, project and leadership skills to
accelerate business performance.
` Manage the talent within an organisation to facilitate development
and career progress of highly talented and skilled individuals
using formalised procedures and process with a focus on emergent
employees and leaders for the future.
` Achieve ‘Operational Excellence’ across the organisation’s assets
by having in place all the process, procedure and skills to deliver
at optimum performance.
The significant benefits are:
Unlock Talent

Giulia Buttery is an experienced oil industry professional, having
worked for the super-major oil companies in senior roles in
leadership, operations and technology.
During her career, Giulia had the opportunity to lead programmes
in oil and gas major projects that resulted in operational excellence.
In Angola, alongside her $800 million p.a budget responsibility,
she became heavily involved in the technology end of operational
assessments as BP expanded its footprint through acquisition and

and project delivery excellence. Using the tools, techniques and

Giulia also recognised the link between capability and Project Delivery

Origins of OEM – The Angolan Oil Industry Case Study
Angola is one of Africa’s biggest oil producer boasting around
9.5 billion barrels in proven crude oil reserves.
The state own oil company Sonangol is at the centre
of the oil industry and by law multinationals who wish
to do business with Angola must enter a Production
Sharing Agreement.
As is typical in all large-scale oil and gas projects
globally, operating in Angola means that there are
multiple parties, processes, technology, data sources,
skill requirements and legal and environmental
regulations. Each of these produces multi-faceted
complexities and whilst all parties worked hard to
produce results, project miss-alignment inevitably
occurred.
A serious of deep dive project diagnostics was performed
to identify what was needed to change from mere project
operations to Operational Excellence. These Deep Dive
Diagnostics proved to produce valuable information that
transformed all ways of working and later were improved,
re-packaged and branded OEM.
The significant benefits were found to be streamlined
process and procedure across operations meaning
that all parties providing services had an agreed way of
working. Costs were more accurately forecasted and so
behaviours around spending became predictable. Over-spend
on these projects had happened incrementally and
was not always calculated properly; also cost recovery
was not always clearly defined leaving intangible amounts
unclear and lost in the system
Although there were highly skilled experts employed in
these operations, the information the diagnostic process
revealed was invaluable and with them we were able to
make the necessary changes to ensure they were leading
teams at an optimum level.
The diagnostic benefits were:
` Costs were significantly reduced
owing to clarity provided
` Process and Procedure became
streamlined across the parties
providing clear ways of working
and alleviating complicated and
costly bottlenecks
` Previously ignored lessons
learned were transformed into
actionable tasks
` Performance became measurable
` Leadership, Skills and Resources
were all optimised
` The PSA became part of the culture
and way of working
` A new code of conduct was established
providing clarity and transparency
` Significant savings were made on
procurement and logistics.

Operational Excellence with Continuous Improvement.
The number of Energy Projects is rising and so is
the level of complexity. This means that margins
are increased, and with the shortage of technical
talent and capability, it only exacerbates the risk on
operations to meet deadlines, efficiently and safety.
In addition all regulatory requirements need to be
met too. The change involved on large-scale projects
is challenging and it is more important than ever
is to ensure there is no complacency. Operational
Excellence is not just a requirement it is critical.
These challenges intensify the requirement for
and the value of Operational Excellence. OEM’s
operational excellence methodology demonstrates
that more than 20% of process efficiency is frozen in
the inevitable complexity of major operations which
leaves a substantial opening to transform a performing
project to an ‘excellent’ project. Currently Operational
Excellence creates its worth through clear process and
procedures, and relies on well-documented standards
with an aspiration for continuous improvement.
Unfortunately, this leads to ambiguity and the
ensuing loss of effectiveness of what began as good
procedures. OEM provides the tools to measure the
gap and enables an organisation to raise quality,
productivity, and achieve excellence.
OEM also goes beyond simply measuring
the gap it supplies manageable solutions
to bridge the gap showing significant
benefits to its clients including:
` Correct selection of talent for a project
` Talent management throughout a project
` Driving project costs down
` Better management of costs
` Avoiding project over run and scope creep
And so much more….
