1) Consumption of foods containing high fructose corn syrup has contributed to rising obesity rates in the US. Government subsidies encourage overproduction of corn which is used to make low-cost, highly sweetened foods and beverages. 2) High fructose corn syrup does not suppress appetite and leads to overeating and weight gain. It is widely used in processed foods and fast food. 3) Obesity rates began rising sharply in the 1980s following the introduction of high fructose corn syrup and increased availability of cheap, high-calorie fast food. Rates continue to climb in most states.
