Functional foods developed in Japan in the 1980s to promote health and reduce disease risk. Nutraceuticals include dietary supplements, functional foods and beverages, and raw ingredients. They are expected to grow as companies integrate medical treatment and nutrition, and use new technologies like nutrigenomics to develop foods for specific health conditions. • The statement “Let food be thy medicine,
thy medicine shall be thy food,” made by Hippocrates.
• The father of modern medicine, is receiving a lot of interest
today as food scientists and consumers realize the health
benefits of certain foods .

3. • The term “nutraceutical” was coined from the words,
“nutrition” and “pharmaceutical”.
• The concept of functional foods was invented in Japan. In
the 1980s, health authorities in Japan recognized the need
for an improved quality of life as well as increasing life
expectancy for the expanding number of elderly people in
the population in order to control healthcare costs. The
concept of foods that were developed specifically to
promote health or reduce the risk of disease was introduced
and was called Foods for Specified Health Use (FOSHU).
• Nutraceuticals cover a broad range of products including
beverages, dietary supplements, isolated nutrients,
genetically engineered designer foods, herbal products, and
processed foods.
