Nutraceuticals are foods or dietary supplements that provide health benefits. The term was coined from "nutrition" and "pharmaceutical". Functional foods developed in Japan in the 1980s to promote health and reduce disease risk. Nutraceuticals include dietary supplements, functional foods and beverages, and raw ingredients. They are expected to grow as companies integrate medical treatment and nutrition, and use new technologies like nutrigenomics to develop foods for specific health conditions. Increased awareness and consumption in developing countries will also drive future growth of the nutraceutical industry.
