Number Day: Teacher’s Notes. As part of a school Number Day event we used 55 Q6 handsets (11 teams of 5) to complete a variety of maths questions in teams: multiple choice, numerical and paper-based (Tarsia). Slide 7 is the start of what pupils actually saw on the screen.

This was to allow equal points for each team and also to collect the handsets securely. We also took time to assign the handsets to the teams before the pupils arrived. Team 1 Team 2 etc…
Number Day. The next slide contains the ‘plan’ we made of how to use the rest of the slides in this presentation. Note: some features of this presentation are only apparent if you have Actionpoint installed: questions sent to Q6 handsets.
Ensure groups are set up.   1. Pose questions. Freeze screen. Tell them that they can earn one point per handset per question. All handsets must be used within the time limit. They can't change their answers. The handsets won't tell them if they got it right. Pose the questions to the handsets (Q1-5) keep groups separate. Reach screen with hyperlink to review.   2. Review answers. Unfreeze screen. Click hyperlink for question slides, discuss the working out of the answers, ensure they know what the answer should have been and why. Take a look at the scores for the teams. Celebrate!   Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each group of 5 questions, end with Tarsia activity. Note: you will need to see the laptop screen to monitor how many people have answered the questions (100%) and to click the hyperlink to start the review.

Review. The activity was a success, Learning & Teaching Scotland who watched one activity commended it, remarking on engagement and use of group work.
Development. We began by thinking that all questions should be sent to handsets rather than the screen to foster group work. We now think a variety of screen-aided questions and handset-only questions is better practice. This presentation will be re-worked accordingly. For example: Question 10 is screen-aided. Question 23 is handset-only
