____ is a region of Czech Republic; the nomadic
Gypsies or Romany are called “____" in French.
By the mid-1800s, however, French authors such as
George Sand and Honore de Balzac had already
started to use this word differently. The 1932
Dictionnaire de l'Academie Francaise describes this
new meaning this way: “One who lives a vagabond,
unregimented life without assured resources, who does not
worry about tomorrow”.
The term now carries a connotation of enlightenment
but also carries another meaning, one of carelessness
about personal hygiene, marital fidelity etc.
Which term, that was loosely used for artist, writers
and entertainers at the turn of the 19th century in
Paris?

This band released only one studio album in the time
when they were together. This album is generally
acknowledged for having had a huge impact on rock.
It was initially supposed to be titled “God Save The
______ _____”, but was changed when the lead
guitarist heard another phrase being used by the fans,
and claimed that it was a working-class expression to
"stop talking rubbish".
However, on its release it was subjected to wide
censorship, due to the supposed obscene title.
However, the band’s lawyer produced expert witnesses
who were able to successfully demonstrate that the
word “_______” was not obscene, and was actually a
legitimate Old English term originally used to refer to a
priest, and which, in the context of the title, meant
"nonsense".

There is a very famous fire scene in this movie
where haystacks are burnt. During the shooting
of the scene, due to an unexpected wind, the fire
went out of control, trapping the lead actress. She
was saved by her co-star, who quickly grabbed a
blanket, plunged inside, and rescued her. The
actor was hospitalised for the burns and the
actress helped nurse him – in which process, she
fell in love with him. Both of them wanted to
marry as soon as possible but the director asked
them to postpone the wedding for fear that it
would affect the movie in which they had a
mother-son relationship.

In the early 1960s, X was a journalist doing a story about Dykes Askew Simmons, an
American murderer serving time in a prison in Mexico. While visiting the Mexican prison, X
learned that Simmons had once been shot while trying to escape. Critically wounded,
Simmons was taken to Dr. Salazar who performed a life-saving surgery.
Intrigued by this, X wanted to interview the surgeon, mistakenly assuming that Dr. Salazar
was a prison doctor. It was an understandable assumption. Since he had medical training,
Dr. Salazar worked with the poor and even had his own office inside the prison.
When X finally met Dr. Salazar, he noticed that he was “a small, lithe man with dark red
hair”. X later described Dr. Salazar as a man who stood very still and had “a certain
elegance about him”. The men began talking, but very quickly, X lost control of the
conversation and Dr. Salazar began probing X, asking questions about Simmons’s victims
and lecturing about the nature of torment. When the interview was over, X asked the
warden about Dr. Salazar’s medical career. The shocked warden replied - “Hombre! The
doctor is a murderer! As a surgeon, he could package his victim in a surprisingly small box.
He will never leave this place. He is insane.”
How was Dr. Salazar immortalised by X?

This is a shot (next slide) from an animated short film titled “Henry”. This movie was
made by X and chronicles the story of Henry, a cute little hedgehog who loves to hug
despite his prickly spines. Things turn interesting rather quickly when he has a
birthday party with a bunch of balloon animals as guests.
This short film is narrated by Elijah Wood, and is directed by Ramiro Lopez Dau, an
ex-Pixar animator who worked on projects like “Brave” and “Cars 2”.
In September 2016, this movie won an Emmy award in the category - “best
outstanding original interactive program”.
After winning the Emmy, director Ramiro Lopez Dau said - “We hope this represents a
tipping point for the Y industry. We’ve wanted to show that Y is an art form – a place
that welcomes storytellers and that even at this very, very early stage it can be a
powerful tool for storytelling. This Emmy validates that vision.”

In the early 1980s, X and Z’s lead singer Y planned a collaboration.
They initially recorded three demo songs in X’s home studio, and
later met up to record the complete project at a fully equipped
studio.
The project never came to fruition and, officially, the reason given
was time constraints and conflicting schedules: both performers
were, after all, quite busy around 1983-84 when the collaboration
was taking shape.
The actual reasons were pretty astounding. Years after that, Z’s
manager Jim “Miami” Beach explained in a London Times interview
that X had brought his pet llama, Louie, to the studio and refused to
record without it. Y called up his manager and explained “Miami,
dear, can you get over here? You’ve got to get me out of here. I’m
recording with a llama. I’ve had enough and I want to get out.”
Further X too had a problem with the large amounts of cocaine
consumed by Y. The three demo songs were released in 2013.

X, whom Brian May of Queen once called ‘the father of Heavy
Metal’ has a very interesting story. While working in a factory
as a teenager, he lost the tips of the middle and ring finger of
his right hand in an accident. He thought briefly of
abandoning the guitar, but was movitated by his factory
foreman, who played him a record of popular jazz guitarist
Django Reinhardt, who had also suffered a similar fate and
was famous for playing with just two fingers on the fretboard.
X continued to play with his natural hand, fitting thimbles in
his injured fingers to extend and protect them. Also, he used
the injured fingers predominantly for fretting chords rather
than single-note solos. Later, he also began to tune his guitar
to lower pitches, sometimes as far as three semitones below
standard guitar tuning, which created a bigger, heavier
sound- which was characteristic of X’s band Y and also a
major step towards the development of heavy metal itself.

X, whose pseudonym is Y, was a 20th century writer, whose work
is marked by awareness to social injustice, opposition to ____ and
outspoken support of democratic socialism.
X famously decided to go to Spain to take part in the Spanish Civil
War on the Republican side. On his way to Spain, he dined with
American novelist Henry Miller (Tropic of Cancer, Black Spring),
who told him that going to fight in the Civil War out of some sense
of obligation or guilt was 'sheer stupidity,' and that his ideas
'about combating Fascism, defending democracy, etc., etc., were all
baloney.
In the Spanish Civil War, X took a bullet to the throat but survived.
However, this resulted in a deterioration of X’s general health, thus
preventing him from participation of any kind in the second world
war.
X also famously described H.G. Wells as “too sane to understand
the modern world.” Wells took offence to this and this resulted in
a row between the two legendary writers.

8 days before her death, in a heavily drugged state, Y added
the inscription X to one of her paintings. The phrase X
reflected the artist’s irony of acclaiming life while suffering
physically.
This inspired the title of a very popular album. When asked
about it, the lead singer said “She went through a lot of shit, of
course, and then she started a big painting in her house that
said X. I just love the boldness of it.”, referring to Y’s strength,
enduring polio, a broken spine and a decade of chronic pain.

The Lost Booker Prize/ Books that were given the Man
Booker prize in 2010
The rules of the Booker changed in 1971; previously, it
had been awarded retrospectively to books published
prior to the year in which the award was given. In 1971
the year of eligibility was changed to the same as the year
of the award; in effect, this meant that books published in
1970 were not considered for the Booker in either year.
The Booker Prize Foundation announced in January 2010
the creation of a special award called the "Lost Man
Booker Prize.

The Beat Generation was a group of authors whose
literature explored and influenced American culture
in the post-World War II era. The bulk of their work
was published and popularized throughout the
1950s. Central elements of Beat culture are rejection
of standard narrative values, the spiritual quest,
exploration of American and Eastern religions,
rejection of materialism, explicit portrayals of the
human condition, experimentation with psychedelic

Greek lyric poet Simonides was celebrating with his relatives
at a banquet when he received word that two young men were
waiting outside to see him. When he got outside, however, he
discovered firstly that the two young men were nowhere to be
found and, secondly, that the dining hall of the palace was
collapsing behind him. A number of his relatives were killed.
Apparently the two young men had rewarded the poet due to
their admiration of his work by thus saving his life.
During the excavation of the rubble of the dining hall of the
palace, Simonides was called upon to identify each guest
killed. Their bodies had been crushed beyond recognition but
he completed the gruesome task by correlating their identities
to their positions at the table before his departure.
This is the story behind the origin of the name of a mnemonic
device, which has become famous these days due to its use by
several beloved fictional characters. Name the technique.

considered to be one of the most important gigs ever.
The gig was attended only by 40 odd people, many of which
went on to form successful bands almost right after they

famous, thousands of people claimed to have attended the
concert. Hence, Nolan’s book also provides a list of all the

X was an American blues singer-songwriter and musician.
As an itinerant performer who played mostly on street
corners, in juke joints, and at Saturday night dances, X had
little commercial success or public recognition in his lifetime.
His best recordings display a great variety of musical skills
and songwriting talent that have influenced several other
musicians of the same genre.
Clapton regarded him as “the most important blues singer
ever”. In 2010, X was ranked fifth in Rolling Stone
magazine's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".
His musical skills and _________ gave rise to the myth that
he sold his soul to the devil in order to attain his inhumanly
outstanding musicianship. ID X

X is a documentary film about the life of British musician X, who
was ranked 26th on VH1's 100 Greatest Women In Music. X's
immediate family were initially willing to work with the film's
producers and director having heard about the success of their
earlier documentary. They granted the filmmakers access to hours
of archive footage of X and her family, as well as giving the
filmmakers their blessing to interview X's family and friends.
However, they - in particular, X’s father soon began to feel they
were being misrepresented in the documentary, that the negative
aspects of X's life were receiving much more attention than the
positive, and that footage had been edited in order to produce an
inaccurate narrative of X's story, especially the last three years of
her life. He has said that X's fans should consider seeing the film
for the rare, previously unseen, archive footage of his daughter,
but should pay no attention to the film's general portrayal of her,
which he has labeled "preposterous". Even after the film was
nominated for an Academy Award as 'Best Documentary', X’s
father tweeted on : "Still hate the film though."

L.A. woman is a song by American band Y. At around 5
minutes in the song, there is a very strange transition in the
song where lead singer X begins to repeat the phrase “ Mr. Z
Rising” which is an anagram of X’s name itself. The chant
gradually grows faster as if to simulate orgasm.
A Z is a Hoodoo charm, usually a bag filled with items like
roots, lodestone, rattlesnake rattles, alligator teeth, charms,
coins - whatever does the trick. Many white listeners,
including X, thought Z meant sexual energy, and that is
how it's usually interpreted today, in part due to Austin
Powers movies.

X is best known as the former drummer of the band Y, led by
Z. However, after the band Y dissolved following a tragic
incident, X went on to form a band W, which has won 11
Grammies till date.
The band W got its name from the UFOs and various aerial
phenomena that were reported by Allied aircraft pilots in
World War II, which were collectively called as W.
ID X, Y or Z, and W. (5 points each).

X was the founder of the band Y, and his main instruments were
the guitar, harmonica and keyboards. Though he was initially the
leader of the group, his band members, A and B soon
overshadowed him, especially after they became a successful
songwriting team.
He also developed a serious drug problem( There is a feature film
based on his life titled “Stoned”.) and his presence in the band
gradually diminished. He was eventually asked by the other
bandmembers to leave the group.

Almost five decades following its release, X’s 1967 album
‘Axis: Bold as Love’ was banned in Malaysia. But unlike other
X projects, the decision was not due to anything overtly
sexual or drug-related in the material.
According to the Malay Mail, the Malaysian Home Ministry’s
Publication Control and Quranic Text unit took offense to the
album’s cover, claiming that it too closely resembles the
various forms of Lord Vishnu and could hurt the sentiments
of several people.

  • 12. Q – 4 This author was an immense fan of cricket. So much that he formed a celebrity cricketing team called the “Allahakbarries”. HG Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jerome K Jerome, Chesterton, AA Milne, PG Wodehouse, A.E.W. Mason all played for this team at some point of time. • 13. Q – 5 ____ is a region of Czech Republic; the nomadic Gypsies or Romany are called “____" in French. By the mid-1800s, however, French authors such as George Sand and Honore de Balzac had already started to use this word differently. The 1932 Dictionnaire de l'Academie Francaise describes this new meaning this way: “One who lives a vagabond, unregimented life without assured resources, who does not worry about tomorrow”. The term now carries a connotation of enlightenment but also carries another meaning, one of carelessness about personal hygiene, marital fidelity etc. Which term, that was loosely used for artist, writers and entertainers at the turn of the 19th century in Paris?
  • 14. *Q – 6* This band released only one studio album in the time when they were together. This album is generally acknowledged for having had a huge impact on rock. It was initially supposed to be titled “God Save The ______ _____”, but was changed when the lead guitarist heard another phrase being used by the fans, and claimed that it was a working-class expression to "stop talking rubbish". However, on its release it was subjected to wide censorship, due to the supposed obscene title. However, the band’s lawyer produced expert witnesses who were able to successfully demonstrate that the word “_______” was not obscene, and was actually a legitimate Old English term originally used to refer to a priest, and which, in the context of the title, meant "nonsense". Which album ?
  • 15. Q – 7 Apart from being a popular novelist, he is also known for his YouTube ventures with his brother Hank. They run the vlogbrothers channel and regularly post two videos a week where they talk about everything and nothing. They also started VidCon, which is the largest online video convention, which brings together thousands of online video viewers, creators, and industry representatives worldwide. They are also the founders of “The Foundation to Decrease World Suck” which runs the annual Project for Awesome charity movement on YouTube. Which author am I talking about?
  • 16. Q – 8 There is a very famous fire scene in this movie where haystacks are burnt. During the shooting of the scene, due to an unexpected wind, the fire went out of control, trapping the lead actress. She was saved by her co-star, who quickly grabbed a blanket, plunged inside, and rescued her. The actor was hospitalised for the burns and the actress helped nurse him – in which process, she fell in love with him. Both of them wanted to marry as soon as possible but the director asked them to postpone the wedding for fear that it would affect the movie in which they had a mother-son relationship. Which real life couple?
  • 17. Q - 9 In the early 1960s, X was a journalist doing a story about Dykes Askew Simmons, an American murderer serving time in a prison in Mexico. While visiting the Mexican prison, X learned that Simmons had once been shot while trying to escape. Critically wounded, Simmons was taken to Dr. Salazar who performed a life-saving surgery. Intrigued by this, X wanted to interview the surgeon, mistakenly assuming that Dr. Salazar was a prison doctor. It was an understandable assumption. Since he had medical training, Dr. Salazar worked with the poor and even had his own office inside the prison. When X finally met Dr. Salazar, he noticed that he was “a small, lithe man with dark red hair”. X later described Dr. Salazar as a man who stood very still and had “a certain elegance about him”. The men began talking, but very quickly, X lost control of the conversation and Dr. Salazar began probing X, asking questions about Simmons’s victims and lecturing about the nature of torment. When the interview was over, X asked the warden about Dr. Salazar’s medical career. The shocked warden replied - “Hombre! The doctor is a murderer! As a surgeon, he could package his victim in a surprisingly small box. He will never leave this place. He is insane.” How was Dr. Salazar immortalised by X?
  • 18. Q – 10 In the year 2007, in order to support the promotion of children's DVDs at it’s stores, HMV temporarily changed it’s iconic logo and replaced Nipper the dog with another popular dog X. Id X.
  • 19. Q - 11 This is a shot (next slide) from an animated short film titled “Henry”. This movie was made by X and chronicles the story of Henry, a cute little hedgehog who loves to hug despite his prickly spines. Things turn interesting rather quickly when he has a birthday party with a bunch of balloon animals as guests. This short film is narrated by Elijah Wood, and is directed by Ramiro Lopez Dau, an ex-Pixar animator who worked on projects like “Brave” and “Cars 2”. In September 2016, this movie won an Emmy award in the category - “best outstanding original interactive program”. After winning the Emmy, director Ramiro Lopez Dau said - “We hope this represents a tipping point for the Y industry. We’ve wanted to show that Y is an art form – a place that welcomes storytellers and that even at this very, very early stage it can be a powerful tool for storytelling. This Emmy validates that vision.” Id X.

  • 21. *Q.12* Arth is a 1982 film directed by Mahesh Bhatt. The film lay in the cans for two years since no distributors wanted to buy it. Due to this reason, it is often incorrectly assumed that Saath Saath(1982) was the movie for which X and Y (probably the most popular husband-wife pair in the music industry) first paired to compose music for a film. X was also known for composing and recording songs written by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in two albums Nayi Disha (1999) and Samvedna(2002). ID X and Y.

  • 30. In the early 1980s, X and Z’s lead singer Y planned a collaboration. They initially recorded three demo songs in X’s home studio, and later met up to record the complete project at a fully equipped studio. The project never came to fruition and, officially, the reason given was time constraints and conflicting schedules: both performers were, after all, quite busy around 1983-84 when the collaboration was taking shape. The actual reasons were pretty astounding. Years after that, Z’s manager Jim “Miami” Beach explained in a London Times interview that X had brought his pet llama, Louie, to the studio and refused to record without it. Y called up his manager and explained “Miami, dear, can you get over here? You’ve got to get me out of here. I’m recording with a llama. I’ve had enough and I want to get out.” Further X too had a problem with the large amounts of cocaine consumed by Y. The three demo songs were released in 2013. ID X and Y. 18.

  • 85. X, whom Brian May of Queen once called ‘the father of Heavy Metal’ has a very interesting story. While working in a factory as a teenager, he lost the tips of the middle and ring finger of his right hand in an accident. He thought briefly of abandoning the guitar, but was movitated by his factory foreman, who played him a record of popular jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, who had also suffered a similar fate and was famous for playing with just two fingers on the fretboard. X continued to play with his natural hand, fitting thimbles in his injured fingers to extend and protect them. Also, he used the injured fingers predominantly for fretting chords rather than single-note solos. Later, he also began to tune his guitar to lower pitches, sometimes as far as three semitones below standard guitar tuning, which created a bigger, heavier sound- which was characteristic of X’s band Y and also a major step towards the development of heavy metal itself. X famously decided to go to Spain to take part in the Spanish Civil War on the Republican side. On his way to Spain, he dined with American novelist Henry Miller (Tropic of Cancer, Black Spring), who told him that going to fight in the Civil War out of some sense of obligation or guilt was 'sheer stupidity,' and that his ideas 'about combating Fascism, defending democracy, etc., etc., were all baloney. In the Spanish Civil War, X took a bullet to the throat but survived. However, this resulted in a deterioration of X’s general health, thus preventing him from participation of any kind in the second world war. X also famously described H.G. When he got outside, however, he discovered firstly that the two young men were nowhere to be found and, secondly, that the dining hall of the palace was collapsing behind him. A number of his relatives were killed. Apparently the two young men had rewarded the poet due to their admiration of his work by thus saving his life. During the excavation of the rubble of the dining hall of the palace, Simonides was called upon to identify each guest killed. Their bodies had been crushed beyond recognition but he completed the gruesome task by correlating their identities to their positions at the table before his departure. • 167. X is a documentary film about the life of British musician X, who was ranked 26th on VH1's 100 Greatest Women In Music. X's immediate family were initially willing to work with the film's producers and director having heard about the success of their earlier documentary. They granted the filmmakers access to hours of archive footage of X and her family, as well as giving the filmmakers their blessing to interview X's family and friends. However, they - in particular, X’s father soon began to feel they were being misrepresented in the documentary, that the negative aspects of X's life were receiving much more attention than the positive, and that footage had been edited in order to produce an inaccurate narrative of X's story, especially the last three years of her life. He has said that X's fans should consider seeing the film for the rare, previously unseen, archive footage of his daughter, but should pay no attention to the film's general portrayal of her, which he has labeled "preposterous". Even after the film was nominated for an Academy Award as 'Best Documentary', X’s father tweeted on : "Still hate the film though." +100/-50,20
