I grew up battling with my weight.
I come from a sports-loving family
and my parents tried everything to
get me active, but I struggled. My
weight spiralled out of control when
I went to varsity. I started sharing
clothes with my mom. I weighed
88kgandfittedintoasize40.
I decided to wire my jaws shut
for six weeks and followed an all-
liquid diet, but I was still not eating
healthily. I would down custard and
sugary yoghurt drinks, so I didn’t
lose any weight. I often drank cider
and the alcohol contributed to
myweightgain.
TURNING POINT
I finally got tired of being big. I
couldn’t fit into clothes and being
surrounded by thin friends made
me self-conscious. It affected my
self-confidence.
My sister asked me: “Aren’t
you curious to try and lose weight
and just see what happens?”
That’s when I decided to try to
lose weight.
My family rallied behind me. My
mom signed me up for gym and my
sister would come and pick me up in
themorningfromresandtakemeto
fitnessclasses.
I started believing I could lose
weight. After a few months, I loved
it and began eating healthily. In just
a few weeks, I saw the results; others
alsonoticed.
DIET AND FITNESS
In addition to my workout, I started
jogging every morning at varsity,
comerainorsunshine.
I changed my diet too – now I eat
a lot of protein and snack on fruit or
nuts. The trick is to not be hungry
and to eat as many times as you can
– but healthy food. I no longer eat
because I’m bored; I eat to nourish
myself. I believe it’s important to
listentoyourbody.
My daily routine includes a
20-minute run, a 90-minute gym
session, and 30 minutes of body
building. On weekends, I do half
marathons. Last year, I decided to
buildmoremuscle.Iwatchedalotof
videos on how to tone my arms and
legs, and incorporated that into my
workouts.
I now weigh 56kg, and fit into
size six clothes. But I’m still working
towards my goal weight of 54kg, so
I exercise six days a week. When
I reach my goal, I’ll do five days to
maintainmyfitness.
