Talk for the Vancouver User Experience group on October 16, 2007 about the user experience of usability projects and how we've re-designed our process.
As developers we usually don't face all the steps of the product creation. We can control and improve our part - development, but what magic processes take place on the product manager's side? If we understand that - it would be much easier to reach the synergy of the both parts. Let's discuss, what is inside the product owner's head.
Code for America Brigade volunteers consider thousands of projects for local civic engagement and innovation apps; we build only a handful in each city. How can we choose better? A little intention could dramatically improve the quality of our project portfolios. I propose we score proposals across four dimensions:
- The value our products will produce. (More users, more usage, building capacity, leaving infrastructure behind)
- Risks of the journey (taking the right level of risks around customer clarity, effort & cost, tech difficulty, political risk)
- Alignment with our values
- Stakeholders engaged and affected

Establishing Your Program's ROI
The first hurdle is at home. Every program manager must defend his program to the execs in the corner office. It is absolutely essential that you can establish a positive ROI for your program and be able to show its value. Bruce Jones will show you how this is done.
First Presented: March 23, 2014 - Developer Relations Bootcamp
Lean software engineering emphasizes continuous delivery of high quality applications. Ken Pugh explains the principles and practices that form the basis of lean software development―concentrating on developing a continuous flow by eliminating delays and loopbacks; delivering quickly by developing in small batches; emphasizing high quality which decreases delays due to defect repair; making policies, process and progress transparent; optimizing the whole rather than individual steps; and becoming more efficient by decreasing waste. Ken describes lean’s emphasis on cycle time rather than resource utilization and demonstrates the value stream map which helps you visualize the development cycle flow to identify bottlenecks. He explores the differences between push and pull flow, describes how lean thinking shows up in agile processes including Scrum and Extreme Programming, and discusses how lean can be applied to the entire workflow—not just to the development portion. Ken concludes with a discussion of how you can begin your lean transformation.

Adaptive Computing Using PlateSpin OrchestrateNovell
Adaptive computing goes beyond just intelligently utilizing available resources; it encompasses quality of service (QoS) targets, fault tolerance (high availability), monitoring, and iterative analysis of the resulting dataset to determine what corrective measures (adaptations) should occur at any given moment. As virtualization becomes widespread in the data center, the need for automating the placement and configuration of workloads (virtual machines) using an adaptive computing model becomes vitally important. This session demonstrates how to use events, introduced in PlateSpin Orchestrate 2.0.2, to create rules that trigger workload provisioning, migration, and other virtual machine lifecycle operations. It will also offer a preview of new functionality included in the upcoming 2.1 release of the product.
That’s right…in a recent IDC report, they tell customers don’t “move” to the cloud, “embrace” it. They also tell customers, don’t even consider the cloud without an identity strategy. That’s where WorkloadIQ comes in. In this session you will learn how WorkloadIQ, Novell’s differentiated approach to intelligent workload management, will help you infuse identity and management into your environment. Come see how together Novell and VMware will allow you to not only embrace the cloud, but also ensure that it’s manageable, secure and compliant. Shining the Enterprise Light on Shades of SocialNovell
2010 has brought an explosion of new social tools to the market, creating a drone of news and conversation that artificially singles out “social” as a stand-alone solution—and for enterprises, a solution to what? When you peel back the category “social,” what capabilities are we really talking about and which ones are missing when it comes to forming a solution that can truly help people in the workplace be more effective?
Learn how to cut through the noise and gain a framework for thinking about the relevance of new tools to their workplace objectives and workplace realities. Attendees will leave this session with a better understanding of use cases and best practices as well as guidance for determining whether a given solution is worth exploring for their enterprise.

A Holistic View of Complex Systems and Organizational ChangeTechWell
One of the most misunderstood concepts in the agile community, complexity is often used to explain why we can’t predict anything or why there are no rules we can follow. Ironically, it is exactly this attitude that allows complexity to work against us. Al Shalloway discusses the true nature of complex systems, why we must deal with them in a holistic manner, and ways to evaluate structural and organizational changes to manage this complexity. Unfortunately, most agile implementations take an incremental, piecemeal approach to change, ignoring complexity. Although this approach causes problems that are attributed to the fact that we have a complex system, in reality these challenges are due to the way we are dealing with the pieces individually. Al describes the patterns of effective organizational change management and explains how understanding the true nature of complex systems can be used to lead organizational change―particularly at scale.

Why don't people adopt the changes we design to benefit them? It is a function of 1) Team bias towards believing they know what end users will want, and; 2) An environment that requires teams to “protect” themselves by showing constant short-term progress. Collecting and utilizing early unbiased feedback will help you balance the effort vs. value equation for your users / customers, leading to quicker uptake.
