Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Here are some use cases that highlight possible ways of sharing files in the enterprise: The Sales GuyBob is on the road and needs to make some urgent changes to a document stored in a shared folder on one of the file servers. The only device he has access to is his iPad. He needs to be able to download the document, make edits and then sync it back to the shared folder. The Team LeadTina needs to set up a shared folder for the project team, so they can share documents related to the project. She wants to do it now, but it’s late and no one in IT is available to help her.The MarketerJohn has just finished the work on a new partner program guide. He wants to tweet a link to the document, but has to wait for the web team to stage and publish the file before he can send out the link.Bottom line: Today’s employees have many different needs for accessing and sharing files in new ways.
There is strong demand for an enterprise file sharing solution that meets the needs of both end-users and IT.Users want easy access to their files from any device, and they want to freely share files both inside and outside the organization. In short, they want a “Dropbox-like” experience at work.Meanwhile, IT has their own requirements. All files need to stay where they belong—in the data center and on the corporate file servers. File sharing has to be managed and policies have to govern what can be shared and what can’t. Users need to access files where they are currently stored—files cannot be moved or copied to new locations to enable mobile device access. And existing access controls have to be honored. IT cannot spend time on re-assigning rights to files and folders on the network.Bottom line: Organizations need a great file solution that will fit the needs of users and IT departments.
Meeting the needs of users and IT … that’s why we created Novell Filr.Only Novell Filr provides secure mobile device access to files stored on your corporate file servers. With Novell Filr, end users get the tools they need and demand to get their job done, while the files stay where they belong—on your file servers.Novell Filr lets users access their home directories and shared folders, with existing access controls and quotas honored.Bottom line: With Filr, users have easy-to-use, synchronized file mobility, while the organization gets policy-driven controls over file access and storage.
Here’s a quick overview of how Novell Filr works: Novell Filr has mobile apps for Android and iOS devices; there are desktop clients for both Windows and Mac. There is also web access if no client or app is available.Novell Filr is easy to deploy and configure because it’s a soft appliance. A single appliance can host all required services for pilot purposes or for small sets of users. Multiple appliances can be deployed to scale the system as your number of users grow. You manage Filr by using a web-based console. Users and groups are provisioned from your corporate directory by using LDAP. Users’ home directories and existing shared folders on your file servers are integrated. And you can create policies that allow administrative control over what can be shared, and how it is shared.Novell Filr supports both Windows and Novell file servers. Existing file system rights and quotas are honored. No server agents or schema extensions are required so it’s easy to install into your existing environment.Filr also lets you keep files where they belong – on the file servers. There’s no need to move files around to accommodate a new system. Bottom line: Novell Filr delivers a wide range of capabilities.
Novell Filr provides intuitive file access. Personal files are mapped to the directory. You can easily see files and folders that are currently being shared with others … and you can see what files and folders are being shared with you by others. It’s easy to see what’s new in files—such as updates and comments. You’ll also see shared folders that are assigned to you by the IT administrator.Bottom line: Novell Filr provides intuitive access to your files and folders, and the files and folders being shared between you and your colleagues.
